Massive thanks to Ramsay, Kenny, Martin, Elaine, and everyone else who helped out this morning. Really well done for securing the road closure - it's a better event for having the kids there, too. Did someone sweep the leaves from the road in the middle section of the climb? It looked like a brush had been put to good use. If that was you, cheers! The roadside support was appreciated as well.

Some of the adults really dug deep in the last 100 yards. Well done to all of you, and special congratulations to Fergus, Elaine and Lewis.

PS Wednesday night's racing was brutal. And Lewis Mul's ride in the devil was indeed the best of the evening. So good it earned a spontaneous round of applause from folk in the track centre when he crossed the line. Perfectly positioned throughout, he manoeuvred the opposition (including the Herbalife rider!) up onto the rail with two laps to go so he didn't have to lead out. Those pedal revs on the final lap, though - that was really something else. Somebody's been on their rollers!

    Hi Mark,

Thumbs up to the idea of some of our older Jets joining in the fun, and thanks on their behalf for the invitation. Can you confirm a date and I will email our members to pass on the invitation - including the 'buddying up' idea, which I think is great.

In terms of who is free to come along, I'll guess that depends on which date you choose. It's not the end of the youth season for a wee while yet!

Have a look at the events still to come (makes you tired just reading, some of the Jets will be at all of these)

    15/09: Glasgow Riderz TT
    21/09: Rothesay
    22/09: National TT
28/09: West Lothian Clarion hill climb or ERC cross
    05/10: Braveheart Omnium at SCHV
    06/10: JWCC hill climb
    06/10: CX starts proper...
    11 - 13/10: National track champs
    19/10: Stirling hill climb

Thanks Billy, lots of good advice for safe riding.

Some other ideas on comfortable fast riding to cover big distances. (These do not apply on weeknight bonkers hard man training sessions.)

The riders on the front have a responsibilty to set a steady pace, not blow the bunch to pieces when they are feeling good. Do not accelerate when you get to the front. If you are feeling strong then do longer spells and be prepared to sit at the front to pull everyone back from Milngavie when they're all blown. People will love you for it.

Watch any pro break on telly, short spells on the front with smooth changes in a tight group are the key to eating miles. Splintered bunches feel rubbish, look rubbish and ride slow.

Leaders needs to ease up going uphill because otherwise the bunch will always split due to slinky effect. Don't worry if it feels slower, it HAS to be slower for the same power, that's what your gears are for, durr.

If someone wants to have a go they can overtake the leaders on a hill but please don't make every hill a race because the steady circulation is disrupted, ultimately slowing the bunch.

Please listen to Mark and do not half-wheel at the front (riding twelve inches ahead of the other rider.) This has three effects: 1) the paired rider feels they have to accelerate to keep up which is incredibly tedious as the half-wheeler always pulls away again, 2) both lines are now out of sync and the twelve inch overlap at the front becomes a whole bike length further back so no-one can speak to their mates and 3) everybody wishes you had joined another club. Preferably in Tayside.

As Billy says the leader always pedals downhill unless very steep. If the leaders freewheel on descents then the riders in the draft will have to brake.

If you need to slow down on descents then sit up in the wind, try to leave brake levers alone.

Only stand to pedal on a hill if no-one is right behind you. Your back wheel shoots back 6 inches on standing and could take someone down.

Learn how to replace an inner tube in under 5 minutes and carry gas. Canisters are <50p each online which is a bargain on a cold day with twenty riders waiting for you to try to get to 120 psi with a useless biro sized pocket pump.

    Hi Jann,

thanks for posting this. SC are floating some significant changes to they way cycle racing and development are run through these proposals. This may or may not be a good thing, but ... SC make a number of claims for the benefits that the changes will bring, but without giving any detail as to how these benefits will occur.

So I've posted a number of questions to their website (https://docs.google....jxPqCg/viewform) to ask for further info, and would encourage others in the club to have a look at the proposals and do the same. That way, SC will hopefully be able to produce a better proposal for reform which we can vote upon at the AGM.

    My questions, posted tonight:

The "Excellent Communities of Cycle Sport" document states that "some centres have asked for change" Which clubs have asked for change? What changes are requested? How have these requests been made?

The "Excellent Communities of Cycle Sport" document states that the proposal will bring “Improved engagement … from member clubs”. How does SC envisage this will happen? The current proposal states that Committees can have up to 6 reps from clubs. This is significantly less than happens at the moment - hence sounds like a reduction in engagement.

The "Excellent Communities of Cycle Sport" document states that the proposal will bring Improved … ownership from member clubs. Can SC explain how they expect this to happen if clubs are not all part of the planning process?

The "Excellent Communities of Cycle Sport" document states there will be "workforce development". Leaving aside the use of the term "workforce" (which makes volunteers sound like unpaid staff) can you please outline SC's plans for volunteer development? For example, SC previously had a Volunteer development coordinator, but this role was ceased some years ago. Will the post be replaced? Will the volunteer development conference be re-instated?

The "Excellent Communities of Cycle Sport" document states there will be "reduced admin and bureaucracy" but the proposals describe a significant admin / process structure. Can you please describe examples of how the proposals will reduce admin?

The "Excellent Communities of Cycle Sport" document states there will be "enhanced commercial opportunities under a common brand". Can you please describe examples of your commercial proposals and how finance raised will be used to the benefit of grass roots, amateur racing at youth, junior and senior level?

The "Excellent Communities of Cycle Sport" document states there will be "integrated plans between regions and disciplines". Please describe how SC foresee this happening - the document discusses proposals for restructuring Centres, but doesn't describe proposals for disciplines. How will these be integrated? are the discipline groups disposed to the changes? What will the governance structure be?

Clause 2.1 of the terms of reference document states "This Committee is established to further relevant targets and outcomes as specified in the Strategic Plan and agreed by the Scottish Cycling Board". In considering these proposals it would be very helpful to have copies of these targets and outcomes and e.g. the SC development plan, and an example RDG development plan. Can these be provided?

Action point 3.2 recommends re-branding centres under new names to give "wider brand awareness of Scottish Cycling". That is, the benefit would be realised by SC. Given that our centre has invested significant efforts to establish a brand to cover our youth and junior development activities it would be useful to understand how re-branding will benefit us as an association.

I set off at 09.03am with the hope of getting under 2hrs 10mins for my first 50 mile TT.

Despite horrid interminable sections into the wind I did the 1st lap in 1hr 4mins but had a collapse & an "off piste" in the 2nd lap.
Reckon I lost about 3mins due to going off course.

I took a wrong turn as the Marshall on one of the roundabouts had wandered off for a pee!

So I stumbled over the line in approx 2hrs 18mins.

Don't know the exact time as my glutes had cramped up & I couldn't
Be bothered hanging about for the results.
