    Dear Cycling Club

I am delighted to announce that Poppyscotland, Scotland’s leading veterans charity, have just opened entries to their first ever cycling event!  In the year which sees the centenary of the start of the First World War there is no better way to commemorate than by encouraging every cyclist you know to take part in the Poppyscotland East Lothian Sportive on Sunday  21st  September 2014.

We have partnered with Musselburgh Road Cycling Club and Leith Cycle Co. to organise what promises to be a truly great event.  The event offers two distances, one for the Sportive novice and the other for the more seasoned rider, so please spread the word to everyone!

    https://poppyscotlandsportive.eventbrite.co.uk

I would be so grateful if you would be kind enough to forward the link to our event entries page onto your cycling contacts it would make the world of difference.

For any and all enquiries, please contact Marianne Craig, Events Fundraiser on 0131 550 1578 or on email at [email protected]

    Kindest regards

Looks like Aldi will have another sale of cycling clothing etc starting from 4th May. I've never bought their products but I hear they get good reviews for the price. May be ideal for beginners or returners not looking to spend too much.

    Anyway, here's a link to Aldi https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/sunday-4th-may/,

    and here's a link to a RoadCC review http://road.cc/content/news/117615-aldi’s-latest-cycling-bargains-include-shorts-jerseys-convertible-jacketgilets.

They aim to get people arriving between 12 and 1 for the lunch break so stagger the starts for this (they dont start the afternoon lap until after 1) but if you are outside this then its ok too - latest start for the afternoon loop is 2.30pm so as long as you average about 12mph you'll have time to complete the morning loop plus also have time for a lunch break. Obviously you'll be able to go slower than this too but that will cut into the cake eating opportunities!

James, you'd be as well shopping around for the bottom bracket that's specifically recommended for the chainset you've got. You'll avoid chainline headaches that way.

I'd start with a new chain, too. If you're shopping on a budget, you'll be able to pick up a KMC S1 Brown 1/8" chain for 4 quid. It's perfectly adequate for training and track league. The only disadvantage is, well, it's brown! For a tenner you could get a KMC Z510-HX in silver.

I can't help with wheels or bars, I'm afraid, but I've got a part-used 15-tooth sprocket that can be yours for a fiver.

The entry list is now on the website.

Johnstone wheelers has 22 entries, but just pipped for the biggest club award by Honister 92 who have 24.

I am planing an October event from Moffat. Just under 50 miles and including the Beeftub and Talla climbs, details available soon.
I still have a few places on the Tour of the isles should anyone fancy a tour on a lightweight bike with luggage transported and meals provided.

Thanks James, too late for me. I scrapped a pair of wheels there last month. I used to know exactly where the holes were below the water but the whole section is dissolving and I was caught out.

Concrete has been poured into one of the holes but more have opened up.

It has been wet for four months and is really a ford!

The Bryton Rider 20 provides perfectly good tracking for strava if Adam's first outing with it is anything to go by. Unlike the Garmin 200 which is around the same price, the Bryton offers ANT+ which allows you to connect speed/cadence sensors and a heart rate monitor. It doesn't provide the breadcrumb trail offered by the Garmin, but it doesn't sound as though you need this. You can pick up a Bryton 20 with a HRM for just under £70 on Merlin Cycles right now and pick up an ANT+ speed/cadence sensor for £17 at Decathlon if you want this. Battery life is reckoned to be a minimum of 18 hours so would even see you through a 200k audax :-)

One thing to note - the Strava App will take into account stationary time, so you will not lose any time at Start/Finish of timed segments. Most segments you will start and afinish as part of a longer ride and no intervention is required if you just press "Start" when you leave the house and "Finish" when you get home.

Saying that, a Garmin is the way to go. Saves the phone battery. I have the basic 200 - very impressed so far.

Thought we would do it again!! Last year we proposed a cycle for the Jets (and accompanying parents!) and proved to be a good outing. This year the weather is looking favourable for the 29th December 2013 and plan was to meet at 12 Taylor Avenue in Kilbarchan and embark on a trip along the cycle track to Lochwinnoch, those wishing to stretch their legs could go onto Kilbirnie and the fitter and more energetic could head for the Barrhill circuit. All returning to Kilbarchan for soup and cake! if interested let me know (RSVP) etc. Regards Tony

Amazed to see that I finished only one position behind Mike! Hardly saw him throughout the race Only one fall which included a face-plant just after the bomb hole. Then a nasty wee ditch full of tree roots with a tree right in front saw me taking an excursion into the undergrowth. This is probably where I ripped a spoke out the rear wheel but didn't realise till afterwards. It certainly seemed a fast course, if only I could master going round corners at speed! Lots of fun though and hope to be at Irvine with or without a new wheel.

Well done Mike, you lead 2-1.
