Sunshine! Just what i needed. Lovely cycle. Counted 23 in the Bunch at it largest, which for a JWCC Bunch ride is the most i can remember for some time.

James and I met Couttie on the path back from Kilmacolm, so the off road nutters were only a minute or so ahead if the Whinn hill clumbers.

1.6 miles from home and my tyre let go with a 4 inch rip in the side wall. Mobile phones! What an invention!

By the time I got to the BB there was a massive queue so decided to press on up the Haylie.

Jeezo-what a plod. Of course I punctured at the top then clattered a big pothole that gubbed my brand new back wheel. My fancy Lezyne co2 inflator is still at the roadside at Mills Dairy as its a piece of bobbins.

    Cycling is rubbish. The end.

Couldn't agree more with Paul's report don't know what was up with me today but had great difficulty holding on to wheels in the wind today. Hopefully better to come now that holidays are here ! Legs blew finally on the wee bit after gate side turning left towards green acres but a good humping never did anyone any harm !

Back to basics bogs bunch today with about 16 or so maybe some more to begin with. JWCC well represented with Jan, Alan, Colin, Robbie, Charlie, Andy, James and me. And Jess as well to Gourock. Was fine after the hail at Bishy. Usual script, pace a bit up and down till everyone settles into a rhythm again. Can't believe it's only 3 weeks to full run and last man standing.

A bit of a late call to organise a run last night, 5 Wheelers - AllanM, Andrew D, Campbell, Peter Graham & myself went out to "enjoy" the weather with a run over the bridge for the Tak via the Kilsyth end & planned on tackling the Crow too.

Met up the troops on the bridge nice & early to take advantage of the better weather forecast earlier on, "hoping" it would last longer than predicted :-)

The Tak was nice in the sense that the road surface had been smoothly tarmac up till the car park, which made the climbing that bit more bearable. The weather started to close in while we were riding through the valley, it seemed like someone just turned the shower hose on & switched the fan setting a lot higher .......... boo!

So a decision was made to skip the Crow & turn right at Fintry to head for Killearn for a shorter route home & a café stop in the lovely village.
Large amount of food/drinks was consume & we left a big wet puddle on the lovely café floor (sorry to the café staff/owner) as we ventured (reluctently) back out to continue our wet pedal home.
Dissaster struck as Andrew double puncture on the way out as he rolled over a sharp drain cover, slashing his tyre wall. Fixing the damn thing was not pleasant given the fact it was blowing a gail & lashing down by this stage ......... fun!

Anyway, we got going again & riding through Dungoyne, then Strathblane to Milgarvin then I split with the guys to head through leafy Westend of Glasgow for home while the rest cycled back over the bridge.
I hope everyone got home without too much bother!

To be honest, I really enjoyed the wet & wind, I've said it before but there's a certain deep satisfaction cycling in the rain (as long as it's not freezing cold) it cleanse my soul (not that it's dirty in the first place mind) :-). With a decent "GoreTex" water proof, I was dry apart from my leg & feet, very much bearable for me.
It's the car passing in the wet which caused the ear annoying noise that I find really off putting, why do people want to drive in the rain anyway? :-)

However, it was a fantastic ride despite the weather & thanks to all for the wheels to follow today, I'm super glad I went out this morning!

Back home with 130km on my Garmin, I love Scottish weather! Now I'm going for a hot bath & then to bed! :-)

    Thanks for reading .............

Cheers & catch youse on the road

I rode this on sunday, chilly, breezy but dry day.
I made up a fourth member of the ivy team as they were short, we were all pretty well matched and rode a good steady round. We managed 14 place which is not to bad in the company. I was just glad that my time counted and I didn't let the colours down.
We should have organized a team of our own as we have some decent guys now.

When we went over the haul road and the rest a few weeks ago the hills werent too bad, the hard bit was trying to stay on Alans wheel on the flat so in that respect the crow route might be a bit easier!

What a brilliant day out, We definitely messed up starting at the back... I stayed close to Alex for the first laps but slowly drifted backwards after my heart rate went through the roof. Had a few spills trying to make up some time on technical bits(but I am OK Couttie, so no need to worry), Finished 94   but enjoyed every bit if it now that I am drinking a Belgian beer watching the pros do it! Well done to Alex and David on their first CX race. Great to see David B, Emma and Jessica M(Jets) who took 3rd  place in her race!

Roll on next weekend for more punishment

Had a baptism of fire into my first cyclocross race today in Falkirk. A beautiful route with only one carry the bike section but plenty of off camber action, slippy climbs and knarly roots to deal with ( still no 8 foot barbed wire fence Couttie ).

Travelled up with Paul Leavy and David Cathcart and met Davie Borland there too so a decent showing of JWCC colours with a few of the younger JWCC in the ladies race too.

By the time we arrived at the start line we found ourselves right at the back (95-100) but David C ended up at the very back (about 110). First lesson is to get nearer the front of the grid!

The starting gun fired. We waited a good 20-30 seconds from the gun until our section started moving. And then the real chaos starts. Leave any gap on any corner (or straight) and someone sticks their wheel in. Up to 87th by the time I cross the line to start the first real lap.

From the line it's a flat sprint around a gravelly right bend onto grass before hitting a 25-30 degree, lumpy slope hoping momentum carries you upward, but with 20 bikes all aiming for a 3 bike wide turn it ends up as a dismount and sprint up the hill and around a tree to remount for the descent. Thankfully the group spreads out quickly and I don't have this problem on other laps.

More uphill grassy/muddy thrashing before a sharp descent, and another sharp turn before the stair climb. Dismount, sprint, remount and a lot of up and down, energy sapping muddiness before the zig zag. A series of 6 off camber steep slope 180 degree turns. Loads of crashes here with the tyres giving way at the slightest push. This, for me, was the hardest part of the course.

Progressed lap on lap from 87th to 73rd to 68th to 62nd and then back down to 66th. By the final few laps the race has really spread out and I'm not gaining, just hoping to keep the riders behind at bay. Passed the line to be shown 2 laps to go (my best lap time 6:39). Knackered. There is no bunch to grab a breather in and with 40psi tyres it felt like I was riding on flats. Behind me I heard the bell signalling last lap. Never been so happy to be lapped! Even happier at the chequered flag at 67th.

Took a while to decide if I enjoyed it or not. I definitely prefer road cycling, but as a tough work out over the winter months cx is right up there. I just need to remember to get to the start in plenty of time.

Cheers to Paul L for the Belgian beer. Went down a treat!

met up at the bb nice ride back, Darl did put the boot down occasionally which was fun, the new member hung in well, should do well with a bit of work. Sense of humour is a bit dry but can work on it.
