Not much to add other than to second all of the above sentiment, good wishes for a successful surgery and speedy recovery Darryl. You'll be pleased to know the bike got home in one piece.

Hopefully we'll have you gracing the bunch with your presence before long.

In the meantime put your feet up for a bit.

Thank you very much to everyone for all the good wishes. Some very unfortunate news to report in that after 20 miles Darryl slid off on a corner and looks to have broken his femur. He was obviously in some pain but he is stable and the medics were on the scene pretty fast. No head damage or anything. Certainly caused a stir with a helicopter required to airlift him to hospital.

Hopefully get an update later, possible from Mark who was kindly taking his bike home.

Wishing you the fastest possible recovery Darryl and absolutely gutted for you if you cannot make the Spain trip.

Can we also stop for a wee dram at the distillery to get us up the climb. Couple of swift ones will do nicely. See what I did there.

    DArryl,

I reckon I'll be at your house at approximately 5.45 on SaturDAy morning to give us sufficient time to get to the terminal, stow the bike rack and purchase tickets etc. Breakfast on the hoof I reckon.

Getting all too real now. More concerned about the DA than La Sufri...DA.

First chance to post since Saturday. Amazing day out. Thot it might have been a slog after a Friday evening function and early start but none of that, just an excellent 100+ ride at a reasonable pace given the small group with some good climbs chucked in (we don't talk about descents......ever).

Got home full of beans, had beer and food, walked dog over the braes, headed out for dinner and red wine and didn't nod off at the table either.

Perfect.........and then got to get a few miles in on Sunday!!!!!!! Bonus weekend.

Mark O got a reaction from Iain67 in Petition- To introduce a permanent, minimum passing distance when overtaking cyclists
I read this last night and, in the light of Ginty's episode, I think that while the highway code could be more specific, the petition to set minimum passing distances is barking up the wrong tree. Billy is probably calling it right on this occasion. A change in the law/HC, as proposed, is unworkable as it is in practice unenforceable, therefore a bad law IMO, see mobile phone usage as a reference point. As Ginty's experience shows it is not always about what room you are given but how cyclists are regarded by motorists at all times.

I think perhaps a petition seeking the inclusion of cycling for an hour in urban traffic as part of the driving test, any retest or test to drive a class of vehicle not covered by the standard licence would be more productive. If you can force motorists to experience what riding in traffic is actually like then there probably is a higher chance that motorists will have greater empathy for cyclists and a greater understanding of how vulnerable cyclists can be. Dead easy to implement - if you don't do the cycling experience bit of a driving test then you don't get the licence.

The DVLA could employ BC coaches to do the training and on road instruction. Might even help the bonkers cyclists who get it so wrong on the roads too - spotted a bloke on a bike riding down a busy Paisley Road West which has really rubbish surface in sections, no helmet, headphones on, no hands on the bars, head down texting. Superb balance but a candidate to prove darwinism. No it wasn't Ginty before anyone asks.

Eric good to hear you're ok after your spill.

Turned out a fine day, the strong easternly wind apart which definitely picked up later in the day. Ended up doing a ton and a smidge, and clocking up 2335 metres of vertical. Legs creaking on the final ascent of the crow.

good challenging route, thanks Billy, group worked well up the Khyber, Crow and along Loch Carron, up Tak and down with a few added dramatic adventures! No reverse Tak and Crow for Alan and me but respect to the hardmen who went back for more! A short coffee break in Lennoxtown gave me the chance to assess the damage, looks just likes lumps and cuts and the bike responded well on the way back. Thanks to Alan for straightening out brakes/shifters and the bunch for insisting I head for home after 'binning it'. Still got nearly 74 miles and 5400 feet on a pleasant day.

As Director of cycling for Thursday night chain gang I hereby find that Paul Robbie Billy and myself are entitled to the bonus points. There was one post by Ian advising of " possible" roadworks and that we may have to take detour. At no time was it agreed on forum or before we set off that we " shall" take detour. Big Alex was clearly pecking as in admission was Daryl. Big Al was overcome with illness and was not thinking straight. Paul Ian & Colin were just following the wheels of McTavish & Michael and would have followed them in to river I on the other hand despite losing your wheels at roundabout manfully chased the true routers. Having lost your wheels to suck made this stretch particularly hard so can not agree your untrue route was tougher
Clearly I am above self interest and the fact that I am getting 3 extra points has no bearing whatsoever. Indeed I did consider that the 4 true routers should be the only counters for Clune and Georgetown but in true Jwcc spirit I have not gone that far. Having heard all submissions final decision to be made by Ian McTavish ( Director of Racing)and on checking my rule book this decision is final and not subject to appeal.
Apr was good but did notice that chasers were all in a line behind Alan though to be fair Daryl And Billy did most of work in our group. Also noticed that some members were in chase group when they should have been in first group but on this occasion only no disqualification

Bickering over detours and short cuts. What next? PEDS, hidden motors, sticks in spokes, bonus points for riding mass produced tat and handicaps for using Italian stylish quality components (see other thread). Poor Charlie now getting dragged into to mediate and restore order.

Green jersey competition descending into eh.......... point scoring posting frenzy. Yis wur warned,so yis wur.

Nowt wrong with shim. Italian quality is limited to wine, cheese, coffee and food in general. Football now and then. And perhaps fashion/style but I'm no expert. Their technological brilliance died with the empire around 300 AD or thereabouts.

As for mass production cheap tat, I think you'll find Compag is not a cottage industry. Prejudicial slips showing Me thinks.

PS it is Darryl's compag shifter that's gub. No mention of a gubbed shim shifter. Oops! Mere detail I'm sure. Lol.

Conti's GP4000 II now on winter (28mm)  and summer (ha ha) (25mm) bikes. Had Conti's GP four seasons on winter bike. 2 year's riding including Paris-Roubaix and regular Glasgow road/pave commutes. No flats that I can recall during this time. Went for the GP4000 II on winter bike only because the 4 seasons in the width I wanted were out of stock. Also Ribble were doing their usual discounts - circa £60 a pair down from £90.

Have just changed all these tyres around and no probs getting tyres on/off rims - even I could do it with ease. Shim 501 bargain basic wheels on winter bike, Mavic Kysriums on summer bike for ref.

Liked the grip and they have lasted well. Would recommend them.

Before the thursday night world championship started i was persuaded not to have the Jens Voigt bonus points and keep the scoring simple. So all you get is strava kudos and the eternal glory of having a solo breakaway sticking going down the Georgetown (which i think this can count as). It's a very exclusive club, only the best of the best are in it
