james-maclaren reacted to Richard in Wanted - Short stem for oversized handlebars
I think you'll struggle to find a stem that short, James. Road stems are typically available in sizes from 80-130mm. It varies a wee bit between manufacturers. Some will go as small as 60mm, but that's fairly unusual.
Easton make pricey 55mm MTB stems for oversized bars. You could have a look at them. Only thing is, when you use really short stems it affects the way the bike handles.
I did a wee Google search there and I read that cross riders typically use a shorter stem than they would on a road bike. Even so, 30-40mm seems crazy short to me.
Perhaps short-reach bars could be another way of solving Hamish's problem?

Andy,
I have basically already hung up the road bike for the year so an off road blast at the weekend suits me just fine.

Hi Colin, Davie and Jann
I'm planning on doing the SCX series this year and emulating my thoroughly woeful n=2 performance of last year. Training would be very cool indeed and I wonder if some saturday mornings in October might be fun? Would be good to do some beach work and I can thoroughly recommend shorelines at west kilbride or indeed the Irvine circuit.
Best wishes
Andy

Colin,
The eerie silence to your query, probably means "No".
I plan to race as much as reasonably practical this year so hopefully will have some Yellow and Blue company at a few races. I have entered the Bute "open" race so the agony starts on Saturday.
Re. training I am still trying to regain some fitness from my lay-off and through some research on the cyclo cross sites have been concentrating on "tabata" intervals - basically blocks of short (20 second) intervals with an even shorter 10 second rest, sounds simple enough but which in reality is horrendous. This mixed in with a few Sufferfest videos to get some longer intervals will hopefully do the trick.
Weekends will probably see me in Parkhill woods but wouldn't mind finding a more cross like circuit as the rocks and roots are a wee bit extreme and have led to some problems running lower pressures on my tubeless rims (burping).
As for honing my very modest skills, my remounts are still useless and will no doubt remain so, but in terms of handling and control if you can run on tubeless or tubs at lower pressures it makes an unbelievable difference. Swapping from canti's to disc brakes has also been a revelation with the novel feature of having brakes that actually slow you down.
Would be good to get a few more bodies racing as it is one of the more fun ways to race on your bike.
Cheers,
Davie

It has been a great week for the Jets. A lot of hard work being rewarded with a few others knocking on the door like young Danny Mul
Attention turns to the Road this Sunday for the Youth TT Champs on the A77

Bucketful of medals for our youth riders in our own National Track Scratch Championships.
Hamish McLaren was Gold in Youth C (is this a formal national title? someone will tell me)
Danny M got Bronze in Youth A
The Youth A girls got a clean sweep in a very close race, the podium was flooded with blue and yellow.
Gold Jess Millar
Silver Luisa Steele
Bronze Gemma Penman
fantastic performance by the riders and we also have more great youngsters coming through.
Other highlights included the endless food and drink supplied by the Millar/Steele/Hazle Catering Co. Thanks, still recovering
A special mention also for Sarah Bradford who was representing Scotland this weekend at the School Games in Manchester and was a phenomenal second in the Madison with Rhona Callander and fourth in the scratch race against the very best young riders in Britan and several Olympic hopefuls (probably including her now. Ed.).

A bit damp and a very slight tailwind on the way out tonight, but a decent enough night for it.Thanks for the timekeeping Jann, and well done to James and Iain on the PBs. Happy enough with my time for tonight, considering.

Thanks again to Jann for consistently outstanding support & expertise!
As Alan says, a decent if slightly soggy night - great effort & PB from James. Only two more of these to go - the nights are fair drawin' in as they say.

James
Meet at the car park at the bottom of Bishopton hill, just off the M8/A8. Start is under the railway bridge, down onto the roundabout, up the slip road, along the A8 through Langbank roundabout, Woodhall Roundabout, turn at the roundabout on the A8 at the bottom of the Clune and return the same way, coming off the slip road for Bishopton before the road becomes the M8.
You can do it...dead flat after last week...Dave

Hi James, we are in Leeds looking forward to seeing the start here in the morning before catching the train to Harrogate for the finish. We were in Harrogate yesterday and the town was buzzing with Le Tour. I expect it to be heaving tomorrow but should be fun and would be good to meet up with other Wheelers there if we can, perhaps for a meal after the race.
Graham & Jane.

James,
Not sure if you deal with this area but the steep bend on Mackie's Mill Road in Elderslie is in a real state.
There are bits of road missing & someone is going to come a cropper some day unless it is repaired.

Hi Guys,
Since our first trip went so well last week, I thought I would try organising another ride this weekend and suggest you come along with me on Saturday afternoon for a trip out.
Any takers? Also open to intermediate riders to come along and if people turn up of different abilities then we can split the group accordingly.
Route to be confirmed, but starting 14.00 from The Pullman Pub, Kilmacolm, not the Club rooms.
Handy for the cycle track and parking if required.
Just as a guide, we covered about 20 miles last week averaging about 11 mph, tending to hang back for the slower riders.
Weather again looks dry and not too hot.
Please post if you are interested or just turn up.
Regards,
James

Thanks to James for suggesting a route and to Mary for support in avoiding West Glen. A lovely afternoon ride including a cake stop at 3 Sisters Bake on the way home. Thanks for waiting at the summit near Gleddoch, my log said 19.2 miles and 1500ft.
Great company from Mary, Kate, Iain and James.
Will plan another outing after Le Tour, Good luck in Cumbrae.
Tandem trying available in August.

There was still closure signs up yesterday, and machinery parked up along the roadside. What they've done looks very good. Wouldn't be at all surprised if there's a breakout of PB's during the chocolate series.

The Georgetown is open. Just driven along it. No notices, no machinery, still some ruts and holes, but still much improved.

Hi James,
Did it 4 years ago.
I was fairly new to long distance cycling then but as I recall I did not find it too arduous. Similar to Drumlanrig.
Might do it again. They keep sending me reminders!!
