James Esus
Gummers and I are planning to try and match distance/climbs of the boys that are away out doing the real deal on the 4th June? Not sure of route/distance/time? Any thoughts??? Anybody want to join us? Make sure you bring a backpack of inner tubes! charlie p
al yuille
Fred Whitton route - bit short on overall climb but tougher gradients !
2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted April 30, 2016 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 30, 2016 Sounds like a horrible idea! alexb
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted April 30, 2016 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 30, 2016 Well, La Sufrida has ramps of 22% and more but with much much longer climbs. The Fred has some corners at 33%, but they are very short lived. I expect La Sufrida to be much harder than the Fred. Perhaps the hardest thing I've done. We were discussing today whether you could get the 5000+ metres of climbing in a normal run around here. It's unlikely. Maybe if you spent 12 hours going up and down the Clune... or something. Now that would be torture.
al yuille
Yeah Fred is 4000m and so was LBL (unless it is 4500 which some recorded) but it's so much easier when the sun is shining ! Darryl Gunson
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted May 1, 2016 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 1, 2016 True, unless it's 30 degrees and you've not even been out in your shorts back home
alexb
Not to mention sunburn, and that awful sweat / suntan lotion combo running into your eyes. Although I can't wait for some warm weather cycling. I've seen the La Suffrida Wall climb peaks at 25%, though the 14km average 6% gradient climb with max gradient of 6% sounds like an hour long torture session... I think its a great idea to replicate this here. Just no idea where you can get the same climbing in the central belt. Ayrshire Alps perhaps? 2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted May 1, 2016 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 1, 2016 I tried making up a route last year with a similar amount of climbing and no hill repeats shortest was about 160 miles, distance would go up considerably when looking for big climbs because of the flat parts inbetween. DavieB
30 odd times up the Fairlie should cover it. 20% gradient included. Darryl Gunson
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted May 1, 2016 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 1, 2016 Yesterday's run was pretty gnarly. 140 miles. Sinclair street, Glen Fruin, Rest, Hells Glen, Otter ferry road, back road to Kames, Kyles of Bute climb, loch Tarsan, Clune . Not got the exact stats but maybe 3000m. alexb
Only another 2300m needed. Perhaps add another 90 miles... It'll be warmer than LBL, thats for sure!
2023 Subscriptions AlanT Posted May 1, 2016 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 1, 2016 Same day as the Scottish 25. I guess I could do that and then join you somewhere on the route. >_< Amaretto's would be favourite.

al yuille
Don't like riding in anything under 20C so struggling even in warmest ever Tasmanian autumn !
alexb
I was doing a wee hill route today (the torturous head wind up Gleddoch made it all the more fun...) and have sussed something that can equal La Sufrida both in distance and climbing. Start at the West Glen side of Netherton. Apply suntan lotion. (Optional). Up Netherton climb and descend all the way into Langbank, up Station Road and continue up Gleddoch climb. At top turn left into Gallahill Road and climb to the pylon. Descend back to start of Netherton climb. Repeat for a total of 24 times. 120 miles, 5,400m climbing. Plus allow 15 miles return cycle to the start gives you La Sufrida! Make it interesting by having a glass of either sangria or mateus every 5th lap. robster82, Darryl Gunson and James Esus

alexb
None of it sounds fun... Whichever way you look at it, La Sufrida is going to be a very, very hilly day on the bike.
