Cheers.

First group worked pretty well together most of the time, but there was some playing about half way round the first lap so I went of on my own for about 15 miles. I got caught just after the start of the second lap and we started working really well together and the group slowly reduced until it was just me and the eventual winner. I was starting to suffer for my effort earlier and on the last climb he put in some big digs and my legs decided they had had enough no matter how much I shouted at them. I attempted to get back on the decent but its was hopeless and when a marshall told me I had 500 meters to go I gave up chasing and coasted over the line. Good day and pretty happy with my form.

Thanks David Oh ya dancer !

Yeah, what a fantsatic result for David. Hadn't realised that he'd done 15miles on his own on the first lap! No wonder his legs were not responding at the end!

I hadn't realised that I was "in the mix" for 3rd, although my legs were totally gone and it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. I sat up with 200m to go.

Roll on next Saturday (yep guys, I did get it wrong on my calander!), where David, Jim, Paul and myself are in a road race in Dunfermline. Hopefully a 4 man team will be good for the mass start race.

Good results all round , nice to see Jim Daly finishing close to Paul which suggests a team effort could be employed at some of the races. Undoubtedly only inexperience cost David his first victory.

A few lessons will have been learnt which will stand him in good stead for next few races. Having done a bit of homework on some of the riders in the first group it was obvious that they shouldnt have been caught as long as someone organised them to work together. Instead of attacking try shouting and organising riders to work , even if you only get a couple working it conserves energy and helps. Remember they dont know you or what experience you have so dont be afraid to organise the group , remind them that they have a lead and only hardwork will maintain the lead. Sometimes its best to have a wee dig on a climb to fracture the group , usually the strongest riders will assist if they are not carrying passengers.

Some basic rules to remember are :-

do your homework and suss out riders in the group in advance , ie who has been ripping peoples legs at winter runs, reliabilities , chaingangs etc

Always do a recon of course ( even if only driving round) but always check out finish area . Checking for gradient wind direction etc no point in starting sprint 200m out if its uphill and into a gale

Learn to pedal with glass cranks , its not always the strongest rider who wins road races.

Good photo of David shaking hand with the winner.

David, Make sure he's second, next time.

I enjoyed that race and am wondering if I have set a new club record for being left for dead by the race convoy 3 times and still getting back and beating them on the line.

All went well on the first lap until momentum was lost due to some very poor teamwork up the tail end of Flanders Moss creating an attempted breakaway immediately after my turn on the front.

There was then a distinct lack of trust all the way down wind on the main road towards Arnprior and we were informed that's where we lost time to group 6.

Super fast and furious over rough surfacing on the second lap from Arnprior to Port of Menteith after being caught by the fast group and then very hard on the uphill stretches to Aberfoyle.

I tried to get some training benefit by helping to pull groups 5 & 6 up Flanders Moss with Rob Wilkins and one or two others.

The gentlemen of the bunch, of course, repaid my generosity by attacking hard up the last quarter of the climb into the wind.

Got dropped just as it began to flatten off and a minute or two later, the race cars rolled past but I had recovered just enough to sprint hard to get back to them.

The cars were stalled a little by two chasers and I made a serious effort to join them. We worked hard and caught the tail of the convoy again.

Me and one other were just able to sprint through the cars and get back on to the bunch at the bottom of the bump before the Killearn Hill but not soon enough to recover for the attack that counted.

Once through Killearn, I felt strong enough and aimed to catch Paul. Fell a little short but was more than pleased to pass the commie csar at the photo finish.
