After that the DA would be a piece of p!$#...

Truly brutal. Questioning the sanity of any of this nonsense.

Got a good start with Davie B, but as i headed down the start line i thought i had a puncture. Battled on. The course was awful. 10-12" deep mud on the uphill running sections (almost anything with a slight incline) and wheelspinning if not running.

Stopped after the first lap to check out my puncture. A good 10 folk passed me. My heart sank when i realised i'd just let a bit too much air out of my tyre and dudn't have a punctute. Got back on and thought about how i could best create a puncture to end this misery...

I'm trying to think about a good bit of the course. The sharp uphill which had no mud was probably it. You could crack on and clear some mud from the tyres at this section, only to encase them again with 5m of hitting the mud.

Finished 46th, which i am dumbfounded by as i really thought i was dead last. I suppose the last lap or two had me catching folk.

Spent at least 30 minutes hosing my bike, shoes and kit down. Had to wash the bath after my shower and I've probably broken the washing machine.

Well done to Davie B. Another good run.

Well done guys and also Alex looking good in the A race. Afraid I have to take this one on the chin as I only lasted about 20 mins then stopped due to gubbedness from yesterday. Aspirations exceeding reality. Cheered Alex for a couple of laps then got sweat chill and departed to warm car.

Technical question, anyone else using a mini v front brake? I have one that is quite bitey and I found myself on the deck quite a few times on slippy off cambers where others did not seem to be having same problem. Wondered if it was the bite of the brake versus the more progressive braking discs which many were using?

That was some course. Cheers for the shouts Chung and Paul! My feet are still frozen and my lurgi is worse than ever.

I watched most of the B Race with David B, Paul L and David C. David B looked really strong - i think you were 11th DB which is fantastic going. Saw a 49th too, but not sure if DC or PL.

A late toilet stop saw me start dead last, but the crack in the grid was brilliant. Seemed to be passing a fair few the first 3 laps then found a group and just wanted it all to be over. Never crashed so often without hitting the deck. Big slides all over the place.

    Brilliant fun!

The JWCC cx race has a lot to live up to now!!! Picks of PL on facebook. Some of DB here as i don't think he's on fb. Sorry DC - dudn't see you without your JWCC kit on.

    Paul,

Truth be told mini-v's tend to be the answer to canti's for all but guys who are good (they don't brake) and can set them up - my last bike I swapped out canti's for mini-v's as it was the only way to get rid of horrendous fork judder. Now running discs and as Paul said for mere mortals these are the answer. I hope to be able to give an update on full SRAM hydraulic v's mechanical disc as I managed to get half price deals from Ribble for combination of CX1 / Rival - bit of faffing about to get cables cut, bled and set up so maybe a couple of weeks before I get them set.

As for wiping out - I did twice the only way to get round a lot of the twisty stuff today was foot out. Forget brakes, tyres are the single biggest advantage gain in 'cross and even though I run tubs my tyres are crap at low pressures as they sit high and tend to "snap" as opposed to having supple side walls - a bit more research before purchasing would have helped. I have a set of Challenge Grifos curing at present, but gluing the Belgian way is time consuming and can't be rushed so they may need to wait ''till next year. The fast guys will be using "cotton" type side wallls which flex with the terrain and will help in all conditions.

Good to see so many Wheelers out today, hope to go a bit better next week if I can stay fit.

The second Rouken Glen Cyclocross Race looked to be fun, snow and ice! Myself, David Cathcart and Davie Borland were in the B race of 100 riders. Not sure what David Borland was in the B as he has had better results than alot of people in the A race! The 3 of us started well all up near the top at the first lap. The course was technical and slippy and got worse as the race went on. Lots of crashes, but soft landings... I had a good few collisions(as did the others) and damaged my front wheel but wasn't bad enough to stop. Davie B was looking really strong, I couldn't see David Cathcart after a few laps as he had a black jacket on. Davie B finished 11th place! Great result after the lurgy. I finished 34th(no excuses) and David Cathcart was 48th after 6 weeks of the bike with illness. Not a bad day for the wheelers... so far.

We met Alex Baird and Paul McDonald on their way to the start of the A race. The course was getting very slippy and alot more technical due to some compacted snow on the turns! but hopefully they have a good ride!

No worries Davie hope you are ok for next week! I really liked the course... It was freezing, snowing and muddy(puddles). I was doing well for the first few laps holding a good position but it was going to be a long haul, it had a wee forest climb that had most people walking, I tried ride up it(almost) and gained some places here, but I think I was going to pay later for the efforts. Then my crank fell off just as I past the pits... not that I could have done anything as I left the spare bike at home haha... No heroics from me running for the last 20mins My first DNF of the season, looking forward to racing that course again.

a few places left for the next 3 races afaik, if anyone wanted to try out CX I would highly recommend this course as not too technical and alot of fun

    Cheers

Great turnout from the club, obviously a few lurkers here, and about nine Jets in the youth races athough now that Jets take up to U18 I was riding against Jess Millar who is now a Junior woman and smashing the old guys.

This is a classic fixture in a great venue with good parking and the hot dog van sold bean to cup coffee.

We started a minute behind the women and juniors. The start was a hoot with fifty guys gunning for the 5 metre gap into the course proper. Shouty. There then followed murderous 180s on grass, bombhole,  through the arena., run up, blaze nightmare and about a kilometre of really sweet singletrack with a few rooty, leafy slaloms including the beech tree bombhole, go right or left?

I was having a great time until a double puncture on the rocky arena pretty much ended my race. Suspect I might be dqd for timing errors after I lost a few minutes getting a spare bike but pleaded with the timers to at least give me a finish.

The rain really started just as we finished so only watched a couple of laps of v40 to jeer at Davie and Alex ("provide encouraging support" shurely?..Ed) Biblical torrent followed.

500 riders is 1000 wheels so the course will have had about 5000 tyre tracks today. It was already disintegrating. Lots of photographers around. I cannot wait to see the effects of rain on the later races.

National champs in Irvine on Dec 6th or something. This is our local course. Brilliant riding on almost smooth machair. Rumours of a 200m sandtrap trench are exaggerated, its only 170m long. Sell your track bike, buy a crosser and get your entries in now.

Alan - the "just 30 minutes to go" line was the funniest thing I've heard on a bike. Was wondering why you had swapped to the MTB halfway thru'.

A classic course probably my favorite of the Scottish scene provided the expected good fun and held up well considering the amount of wheels churning it up.

Great fun and well done all who took part, top 50's and unlapped for me and Alex who sportingly pipped me on the line . Believe me unlapped is an achievement!

Cant' wait 'till the next go round.

Echo the above. Slippery, muddy, wet, windy, magic! A bit surprised to find about 50 riders seeded and filling up the front 5 rows at the start though, but I suppose this was a championship round.

Folk all over the place at the start with a crash stopping us in our tracks before we hit the first mud. Three running sections which were pretty long due to the state of the course. Very few passing opportunities in the second half of the lap though as the trails are so narrow which can hold you up for a fair amount of time. Overall a great course though with a nice mix of deep mud, less deep mud and shallow mud to deal with.

Managed to catch up with Davie B's group on second last lap before slamming head first into a tree. Lost front brake and twisted lever. Took until said tree on final lap to catch him again just in time to see him wipe out in front of me in a track blocking classic but he got going again preventing my pass.

Felt a bit (okay not at all) bad as we sprinted the final 100m to the line just edging it. Sorry Davie!

That's my first cx race without being lapped so a definite improvement.

Hi, just alerting all to the wonderful world of cyclocross. We had about 15 jets and wheelers at Strathclyde Park today

The season is well underway. There is some great racing coming up in Stirling, Fife and Irvine.

All you need is an mtb with skinnyish tyres or ideally a cross bike: big tyre clearances and canti or disc brakes for mud.

The scene is very friendly and good for friends and family. all ages can race from under 8s upwards.

Races are 40-50 minutes for the adult riders. Expect singletrack, mud, hurdles, mud, grassy offcamber, mud and spectators in wellies with cowbells. If anything goes wrong it is never more than a five minute walk to the finish.

The best part is watching the next bunch of racers taking on the parcours after you have finished.

Look out for news in Cyclocross sub-forum. or the scottish cyclocross site, sorry no link but google will find it.

    Alan
