Shorts on tonight and fingerless gloves. Where was everyone?

Tough old night with some epic long spells on the front from us all. Wet but not too cold.

Dead heat on everything, so by my reckoning thats a total tally of 3 pts turn up, 6 pts (3, 2 + 1) for Clune 3 pts (2+1) for sprint and 12 pts (6, 4 + 2) for sprint. Totals 24 / 3 so 8 each! Nice one.

Only thing I would have changed would have been my shorts and fingerless gloves - frozen!

Cool little app. We will be able to see location of JWCC club members on the route. Perfect for working out the timing of having a cold beer ready for me when I get back 😂😂

Thanks Guys, and thank you Andy for organising the card and flowers. I have to say that everyone was brilliant at keeping me comfortable while the ambulance arrived.

As for progress, as Paul reports I had surgery yesterday and things seem to have gone ok, as far as we know at this early stage. They have rebuilt me with titanium, but it's only the 3Al alloy , not the expensive stuff my bike is made from. NHS eh...always cutting corners.

They have had me out of bed to day and walking with a zimmer. Didn't feel too bad. Apparently it's 6 weeks or so of partial weight bearing exercise, which may include some light turbo spinning. After that, who knows? But, hopefully I'll see y'all on the road soon. My goal is to be on the bike for August.

    Cheers

Following Darryls crash on Saturday the people living in the local cottage were incredibly supportive and generous in helping Daryll, providing a quilt, support for his back etc etc. They offered many of us to tea or coffee also. As a note of thanks and update from the club I've sent a card and some flowers to Muriel.

    Guys
Just to let you know DArryl had surgery toDAy and chose a titanium pin in his femur to go with his bike
He is very positive given that there is still pain and is already talking about Pyrenees in August ! Chapeau indeed.

Hi guys Claire here. Darryl wanted me to let you all know that he is ok and wants to thank everybody for taking such good care of him. He is now in the rah ward 23 and it has been confirmed he's broken his femur. Surgery probably tomorrow. Will keep you all posted. Thanks claire

Thank you very much to everyone for all the good wishes. Some very unfortunate news to report in that after 20 miles Darryl slid off on a corner and looks to have broken his femur. He was obviously in some pain but he is stable and the medics were on the scene pretty fast. No head damage or anything. Certainly caused a stir with a helicopter required to airlift him to hospital.

Hopefully get an update later, possible from Mark who was kindly taking his bike home.

Wishing you the fastest possible recovery Darryl and absolutely gutted for you if you cannot make the Spain trip.

Wow! Some change on the BBC "forecast" in the past hour. Looks pretty good now. Think I'll just pack every bit of cycle clothing I own and see how things look at the ferry terminal...

Not happy, can someone fix the weather please? I like the idea of rough northern classic riding in rain a lot more than actually doing it. Watched the soigneur piece on Giro extra on the telly. The riders have two car bags each with lovely warm dry clothes and up to five pairs of gloves. If only.....

It occurs to me that we've had some very good discussion about them tactics and plan for Saturday.

This seems like a DAft and obvious question but given that we are about to embark on a 112 TTT what are folks plans / thoughts / advice about nutrition and hydration (apart from having plenty)?

AnDy, I reckon best strategy for climbs is not to big a deal on the short climbs but on the longer ones possibly best to have the better climbers doing longer pulls but remain in single line. If headwind out of Lochranza this could be an opportunity for Robbie and James to shine ! And they can get some relief on the flat afterwards
It's good to have a plan but the road, the legs and the form will decide on the day

Sitting tonight with some recovery juice and thoughts turned to DA. In terms of strategy I am thinking as below but welcome other thoughts and suggestions,

    - single pace line, straight to back just like the pro's do on a long TTT
    - pace regulated at SA pace plus a little bit extra from the start
    - looking like a decent number so probably about 30-45 secs on front which will mean a spell every 4-5 mins
    - important point is do not increase pace, keep it smooth as possible with guy swinging off easing back and going straight to back, no macho keeping the power on to make the next guy work to come through
    - if you are having a good moment then go a bit longer on front before elbow flick
    - elbow flick is mandatory, we do not want people behind accelerating to get through and do a spell
    - be realistic about your personal ability, flick that elbow as soon as you start to let the pace drop or preferably before
    - communication is critical. I will take personal responsibility for making the call to up or down the overall pace with the help from my data friend whom I hope will have the last but one single stored for up to the second pace comparison on his Garmin (I will contact you separately Jan to check out your thoughts on this)
    - mechanicals, sorry but we all sign up for not stopping, it is just not feasible, I really hope it does not happen to anyone,
    - please think about your personal strengths and play to them, obvious examples would be Robbo or James leading on the climbs into the headwind or Jan and Alan doing longer turns on the flat. But, and this is the really important bit, if you are particularly strong at one discipline please remember others are not so ride to the teams abilities rather than your own,
    - the best team player will lead the team within their abilities on their preferred terrain but will sensibly pull back when it does not suit them,
    - it is very likely most people will have a crisis in confidence or form at some point, it is just fine to either miss spells or roll through for a very short spell
    - it is not fine to miss spells without shouting to the team that they should drop in in front of you
    - when a single line goes round a corner or makes a descent round a corner the line always stretches with gaps opening, remember the first guy can take the best line and see the pot holes etc but everyone behind cannot, if you are on the front the very best thing to do is hold back for a few seconds to let the line reestablish itself, this is best for the team effort,
    - and finally, shout out the pot holes for the team behind,

    Some practicalities

    - we make a stash about 500m from ferry for spare bottles, food etc, so poly bag or similar with provisions for 2nd lap should be brought along
    - the stop time will be about 4 minutes max so think ahead on quick changeover of bottles, food etc

Look forward to your comments and additions. I can't wait to give this a bash as I Truly believe that everyone is up for dong whatever they can to make it happen.
