DavieB got a reaction from PaulL in PF30 for cyclocross?
Hi Chung, I have actually bought it (see below) it was the result of a mammoth search to find (what seemed like) the last 52 frame in the UK from the 2016 line-up - only way to get non-thru' axle variant. It's basically the same frame as the top models but with budget kit. Got at a good price and hope to sell the wheels and FSA crankset.
Purchase has resulted in a 2 way bike build as I am swapping all components from my Kinesis to this and vise versa. Now sports Planet X carbon tubs, SRAM Rival hydraulic brakes, Ritchey WCS cockpit, Thompson Elite seat post, clutched rear mech (I still use bargain basement Sram mountain bike 10 speed jobs which, when the awful OEM jockeys are swapped out, are bomb proof). Soon to be fitted with Praxis Works BB adaptor for 105 Hollowtech and Rotor narrow/wide CX single chainring.
It won't actually be the lightest but then again neither will the rider. It won't actually be the best but then again.....

It would be a shame to get that bike dirty may I recommend attending the races but just pose with the bike , your BB will last for ever

Davie, excellent write up, could you maybe add a few more details like where the rubber plant was grown for the tyres

Now I need to have a look at "your" X-Night for sure ................. Xmas definitely came early for you then :-)
Happy CX-ing Davie

Chung,
Just when I'd made a decision to go PF30 you have put doubts in my head......as for carbon CX frames with threaded BB I was coveting one of these for a while...
http://alanbike.it/en/cross-gravel/
Not much scope for UK sales and have the dreaded thru' axle factor.
When I bought the X-night the master-plan was to run bog standard Hollowtech cranks on single ring with Praxis convertor. I should have followed my 1st instincts and saved myself some swithering.
Praxis plus Hollowtech it is..... sorted! I'm sure I can upgrade to Rotor cranks somewhere along the line.
Cheers,
Davie

Davie,
I had a set of Rotor 3D+ cranks (it's now on Charlie's Scott), they are noticeably stiffer than any thing I have/had, the 30mm axle helps I guess in the stiffness.
If you're concern about rust in your PF bearings since you're running it CX, then maybe the ceramic bearings will help, but both cranks & ceramic bearings ain't cheap which I'm sure you know already. I think I paid about 90 quid for the ceramic bearings
If you can find yourself an older model of the Colnago Prestige, then it'll be a carbon CX frame with BSA threaded BB.
Unfortunetly, the newer Prestige have PF also now, but they don't use the Colnago designed "Threadfit" design (like on my C60) which has a thread alloy sleeve to take the PF bearings - the alloy machined bearing interface has a much better tolerance than the carbon ones, hence avoiding the dreaded PF bearing creaks due moving around the carbon BB shell - in extreme/severe cases the moving bearing wears out & damages the carbon shell area rendering the carbon frame a total right off - then you need to buy a new frame (which is what bike manufactory wants ultimately - ain't it)

Happy Shopping Davie, hope that helps!

Aye rub it in.....the reality of hobbling about for the foreseeable is starting to kick in now.
Have bought 2016 non-thru axle x-night so at least may have a project to keep me busy as it is 60D variant so the FSA crapset and mechanical disks will need swapped out.

Wishing u a speedy recovery. For what it's worth I used to tear my calf muscles all the time when running. Got ultra sound from physio & told could cycle as not weight bearing. Also after I snapped my Achilles heel I lost a lot of muscle in left calf but still able to turn the cranks. Stay off the pies and u will b fine

Wish it was a mechanical - left calf muscle gone and season over.
A season that started with some promise before descending into sub par mid season ended up in Crosshouse A & E....gutted.
Well done to Paul who joined the "not lapped" club and is cementing his place at the front end of the race, I'm sure it's got something to do with that bike
Enjoy the rest of the season I may see you again 2-stone heavier and much slower. Would buying a new bike now cheer me up or "p" me off even more?

Tough day in Fife mud....slippery but not very clogging. Good to see Duncan and Mike in the v50s and an excellent result and decent points for Paul in his pro calibre rig. Another load of dross from me and continue to get pummelled at the back so hopefully the sand dunes of Irvine are kind.

Nae luck again Paul.
At every race you see some choice riding and you do need a fair bit of luck sometime to get round. Anyways I lived to see the day my name was called up for the grid, it was the last name called but hey ho! That said, last row of the grid was no use and it was the usual stramash of riders some of whom would be better off staying back a wee bit and riding a solid race of their own rather than going Banzai at the start and messing up the races of us gridded elites
Needless to say a Kamikaze move at the the off camber 1st corner caused a crash with me caught behind it, made up most of the places in the 1st lap and consolidated a position in a good wee battle amongst 5 riders. Rode sand first 3 laps but then missed rut and came off 4th time round, rider behind had to dismount and doing so ran his bike over my carbon rims (oops) no time to check if they were cracked or not but was a bit wary of them for half a lap so lost a wee bit of ground, which I managed to make up and then lose again on the group in front. Entering last lap, I decided to consolidate position as I was never going to catch group up front and had miles on the guy behind me and guess what - every technical section fluffed, and an off through (easily) rideable mud and got passed!
Even though it was a decent result for me I was actually fumigating as I crossed the line as my last lap was a bomb scare - about 40 seconds off my average - and lost an easily defendable position.
Any way it was a cracking course, though the fact that you don't have time to practice is a bit crap as 3 laps in I was still finding my preferred lines.
