AllanC reacted in Calling all Mountain Bikers
My background is pretty much exclusively mtb. More focused on cross and road now due to the time constraints of having two young kids but I still get out on the mtb now and then.
All the places mentioned earlier are good. However, my own fav is aberfoyle. Lots and lots to ride and it's quite close to home.
Cathkin braes is good but very manufacturered.
Carron valley (near Denny) is excellent.

Cheers Ian. Will investigate the Braes. New to mountain biking myself, I was down in Glentress a couple of weeks back. Great setup and tracks; only pay for parking (£5 for the day, bike wash and showers. Don't forget the £1 coins). Also recommend Go Ape as an aside; 2nd last flying fox 1/4 mile across the valley 150 feet up is brilliant.

There is some xc riding up the Glennifer Braes - possible to ride from the back of Elderslie to Barrhead covering sides of Robertson Car Park past Paisley golf course Glen Park, Brownside Farm and Firenze . This is mostly all traditional xc mountain biking rather than specific trails so can get muddy when its wet. There is some hardpack too which stands up to the weather better on the Brandy Burn side towards Elderslie at Windyhill Woods

At Clyde Muirsheil you can follow some of the paths and go up to the old mine, at Lochwinnoch there is Parkhill Wood there is a short loop in there.
Fairly close by there is the Commonwealth Games course at Cathkin Braes (which is closed just now for the games) and miles upon miles of access roads at Whitelee Windfarm plus a small mountain bike skills area which is due to open soon.
Further afield then Glentress down in Peebles is the big one. Purpose built trails to suit all levels of ability, would definitely recommend a visit there.

AllanC reacted to martin in West of Scotland Cycling Association - changes affecting us and our club
Hi all,
Lengthy posting - apologies!
You may be aware that Scottish Cycling is re-structuring the way in which cycling is organised in Scotland. Their proposals include moving from the current Centre Associations to 5 new regions.
JWCC is part of the WOSCA centre which, under new proposals, will be transformed into "Scottish Cycling - West of Scotland". So what, you may ask? Quite a lot, really. It's more than a name change, with significant proposals to alter the way in which cycling and specifically racing is organised in our region.
I have been the club rep at WoSCA meetings for the last couple of years and am also the Youth Development Coordinator at WoSCA. Being the interfering type, I also volunteered to be part of the working group tasked with deciding what the new structure should look like.
The working group has begun by changing SC's plans for how this will be done . We figured it would be useful to start by asking what clubs and members thought the new region's goals should be and to keep them informed of what was happening. We will do this via regular meetings and postings here and on facebook etc.
So this is an invitation to get involved, either by posting your views here or by coming to meetings. Details of the first one and the new goals are listed below.

AllanC reacted to Mark O in Senior Club Member Coaching
Guys/Girls
I have now successfully completed the 3rd day of my BC level 2 coaching qualification and subject to my paperwork being given the appropriate rubberstamp I will hopefully have a level 2 coach endorsement on my licence.
In the meantime I am happy to continue providing coaching to the senior members of the club free of charge. The club have paid for me to go throught this process with the sole intention of providing coaching to the senior members, so this is for your benefit and not necessarily mine. My reward is seeing you guys and girls improving your skills and knowledge, being better cycists and enjoying your bike more.
So to that end coaching is available to everyone in the senior club, be you a rank newbie still trying to get to grips with the the whole thing or an old hand who has been doing this for years, but may have picked up bad habits, never be taught how to in the first place or just want to brush up on some aspect of your skills - bear in mind even the top pros in their respective sporting fields get coached.
If you are interested in receiving some coaching get in touch VIA THE PM SYSTEM. Give some idea of what aspect(s) of cycling you'd like coached in and what days/times during the week would suit best, if there is sufficient interest I will prepare sessions based on the responses recieved. Remember this is skills coaching and not fitness or performance coaching, speak to Billy Mac regards that.
In order for these sessions to work best I'd be looking for between 6 and 12 riders. I can not coach a group less than 3. This is also a notable time commitment by me in terms of preparation and 2-3 hours out of my evening or weekend to deliver the sessions. I'm prepared to give this additional time to you, the club members, but only if there is a reciprocal commitment to turn up. You also need to be a full paid club member.
Cheers
Mark

AllanC reacted in behaviour on forums
Hello,
I have been contacted by several club members who are concerned over the tone of posts on our forum and how these posts may appear to the public and prospective members.
In the past I have contacted individuals in my previous capacity as club chairman to ask the perpetrators to moderate their posts but this has obviously failed to have the desired effect.
Some of the nonsense I've read recently is playground stuff
I appreciate that some of our members are passionate about the sport but could we please try to temper this passion when on our message board?
In the grand scheme of things upside down logos or club runs that don't fit in exactly with your requirments aren't the end of the world. Not by a long way.
So please think twice before posting.
Thank you for reading,
George.

AllanC reacted to AlanT in New photos for the club website.
I think that the email is too big, so the photos are at this link here.

The only stipulation is that Mark has asked that he is acknowledged as the photographer on these. That's why his name is in the bottom right corner

AllanC got a reaction from Thomsonscycles in Aldi's Cycle Clothing Sale - Sun 4th May
Looks like Aldi will have another sale of cycling clothing etc starting from 4th May. I've never bought their products but I hear they get good reviews for the price. May be ideal for beginners or returners not looking to spend too much.
Anyway, here's a link to Aldi https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/sunday-4th-may/,
and here's a link to a RoadCC review http://road.cc/content/news/117615-aldi’s-latest-cycling-bargains-include-shorts-jerseys-convertible-jacketgilets.

Just to mention that due to the great generosity of Thomsons in supply the prizes there are some surplus funds from the race on Saturday. And so the club coffers will benefit with an input of £150

Fellow pave specialists can you send your various photos amd comments, thots anecdotes etc. I want to compile a bundle to send Alan C for the website. Easier if you send your stuff to my work email - mark.o'[email protected]
Fab weekend, even if pave hurts. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. Another foreign sortie to add to the Joansin annuls. What's next is my feeling right now. We need to welcome our honorary east coast contingent of Andy and Gav to the fold. Two top blokes.

AllanC reacted to Mark O in Bagel Basket - emergency 'get you home' kit
Guys/Girls,
While frequenting our favoured watering hole with the main bunch in Largs at the weekend, Mr Bagel Basket (Dennis) advised me that he has placed a couple of inner tubes, tyre levers and pump behind the counter at the cafe for club members' use, should anyone get caught out with more flats than they can handle.
I think this is a fabulous gesture by Dennis and one we as a club should acknowledge by continuing to drink his coffee, eat his cakes and leave his fixtures and floor soaking wet when we leave. Dennis has mentioned on more than one occaision that he, Laura and the staff do enjoy our custom and give the place a real buzz when we turn up. It's good to know we are most welcome at the Bagel Basket, whatever condition we turn up in, and the club's general friendliness is appreciated beyond the cycling world.
