Purely for information, and not implied as a recommendation,

I made an inquiry about whether one could enter the track league without having formal accreditation. On the basis that if you have a V3 licence then this evidences you are an experienced cyclist. The answer was 'As this is an SC event you do not require accreditation'

Which raises the obvious question, what event would you need accreditation for - anyone know?

Ayway, I plan to enter the track league in maybe 2-3 weeks time.

You don't need accreditation to race in any event

What you need it for is non coach lead training

For example you can not turn up at the track for a session on your own without it

Hope that helps

Also from what I was informed the plan is that you will eventually need it to race but horses for courses they need riders for the league

There's a thread about this on Braveheart. One of the posters makes the point that if you are not used to racing on the track, for safety reasons, you should get some non-competition track time. I think this applies even if you are an experienced road man. It seems a bit weird that they will let you race without any track experience at all! I for one intend to get that time in the accreditation sessions, and maybe even a track racing session as well, before I sign up for the league.

As per earlier post, ultimately they want all regular users and racers to have accreditation, but equally they want to satisfy the demand for track access by starting the league straight away.

If riders clearly have no track experience or aren't up to the standard, I imagine the comms will hook them. Simple.

[bTW If you're an experienced trackie, you'll be able to go straight to the assessment part of the accreditation process.]

Just wondering Paul. Do you know if you have to be a BC Member?

I'm certainly going to get accredited before racing on the track, as I have only been on a fixie once in my life, so have no intentions of getting lots of splinters in my ass from rushing into it. No guarantee that I wont get splinters in my ass if I do the accreditation, but I will hopefully have an idea of what I'm doing and some more experience of a fixie.

Keen to start the accreditation soon as possible.

There has indeed been some discussion on Braveheart and an updated Meadowbank Accreditation list posted. This lists current JWCC members as provisionally accredited; Richard, David T, Greg B and myself.

This stems from a two hour session in July 2010. Other than Richard, I'm not sure if any of the others have ridden on a track since - I certainly have not.

Much as I enjoyed the 2010 session and learnt a lot - (they had us doing team pursuit changes and finished with a Devil), it was only my second track outing in 40 years! I would consider myself a track novice and whilst I ride a fixed wheel regularly, would certainly welcome some non-competitive track time to start.

I now have a track bike and am as keen as any to get going!

It would be great to move forward on this. Sounds like there's lots of interest in getting involved in track league. I'd be keen too but would value the opportunity to get accredited. That way my letter to Santa will have more gravitas :rockets

Fantastic racing at the first ever track league last night. Well done Sir R of M for showing the Joansin colours ad the head of the race several times. Best bit was an audacious 2-up attack with Aidan Quinn of the Ivy in one race which had about half a lap advantage with 2 laps to go but got swallowed up on the bell lap.

Even I you're not racing it's well worth dropping in for a look. Warm, dry, and a real close up view of the action from track centre. Good coffee and cakes from the caff and you can talk bikes for hours with all sorts of folk you know.

Regular weekly fixture from now on.

Sounds great - any chance of a report Richard?

Hope to join you in a few weeks.

I have bought all the bits to build a track back and await delivery with great excitement. My plans got put back a bit when I received an email after 5 days from the frame supplier telling me they could not supply it after all (it was a Specialised Langster pro). So I've now bought a Dolan precursa with Planet X tubs etc. Another wee build project then hit the boards.

Meantime there is cyclocross this weekend .....

Oh ya dancer !

Anyone fancy heading to the track next week for first accreditation or similar session - whatever is on offer. Family away, so I'm free any evening.

Have just ordered one of these on the cycle to work scheme, although won't get it for a while

Would be up for giving accreditation a shot next week.

Want to see if I have the bottle for it before I commit to a track bike.

On that subject, I see Ribble do a track frame. Anyone know if these are any good?

p.s. I believe that you are allowed to use the hire bikes for accreditation and drop in sessions

but not for the track league.

Pretty sure that was just a rumour. Certain I saw rental Dylan's in the session last night.

Daryll,

I'm keen. Only evening I can't do is Wed, but it sounds like the league is on then anyway.

R

I'll give em a ring and see what's what. Can't make this Saturday (as per Charlie's post) but might be able to make the following weekend if they run a session.

Sounds great - any chance of a report Richard?

There was a great turnout last night. There must have been 60-plus riders, including the youths, and as Martin has already hinted, there were lots of folk watching in the centre of the track, faces you recognise from cafe stops and training bunches.

The track is superb - really world-class. When you climb the stairs and walk into the centre it's hard not to be overwhelmed. I had a very strong "are they really going to let me ride on this?" feeling when I saw the banking under lights.

The velodrome is incredibly warm and the air is very dry. It makes for a very fast track. I was under-geared on 88.5".

They put me in the C group. About 20-something riders of varying ability and track experience. The first couple of races were a bit nervous. Nobody really knew anyone else or what to expect from them. As the night went on, it settled down. I felt safe enough riding in the company of the same wee group of folk who were in the mix at the finish each time.

I had an OK night. I was there or thereabouts at the end of each race. My best result was a second place in the devil, but the race I had most fun in was the scratch at the end of the night, the one that Martin mentioned. Seven laps or so to go and nothing was really happening. The folk on the front didn't want to be there. I came through and had a wee dig. I'd got a gap, but the bunch were working to close it down, so I swung up and dropped back into the line. The same thing happened again - not much pace at the front, no-one wanting to be there. I went hard as I could for 30 seconds then tried to ease back to a pace that was sustainable. When I looked over my shoulder I had a good 20 metres on the bunch. I rode a couple of laps on my own before Aidan came over to me on his tod. He was willing to work but only for half-lap turns. I was pretty gubbed and would have appreciated a whole lap on his wheel. Never happened though. We worked well but a wee group of riders came back to us. I hung on to their coat tails but I was never getting amongst the places after that. I think the mighty Quinn won. That's what happens when you're talented and 20 years younger! Even though I shot my bolt too soon (and only really attacked because my wee brother was watching!) that race was the most interesting of the night for me. A bit of an eye opener to think that I can escape the bunch and stay away for a couple of laps on my own.

I'd love to see some other Wheelers there on Wednesday nights. It was really well run and the many, many volunteers and commissaires did a great job. Don't rush into it, though, folks. You'll enjoy it more if you work through the accreditation process, I think, and build up experience a wee bit at a time.

I hope to be back on a bigger gear next week. I've entered, but I'm on earlies on Tuesday and Wednesday and don't know if I'll be sufficiently awake for racing. I'll make a decision nearer the time.
