2023 Subscriptions martin Posted November 17, 2008 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 17, 2008 Thanks Kenny, It's all about how you present the data. 42nd overall is a better description of how I fared yesterday Overgeared / underfit, and spending too much time freewheeling or on the brakes. Does anyone know if I can fit a 34t ring on a 53/39 campag chainset? And if I can, who's got one for sale? Fortunately young Mulhooligan was there to uphold the family honour. He had a fine time, but note finished 3rd in the U12's, not as the organisers published. Still, great fun for my first time out on the CX bike, and a brilliant work out. Very well organised event, brilliant weather, smashing course, and top quality spread after. Recommend this stuff to anyone. Roll on next week at Irvine, the following week at Plean, and then the champs in Dundee! m

simon simpson
34t is not possible on a 39t campag: from memory a campag chainset has a bolt circle diameter of 135mm, shimano road 130 (minimum tooth 38) and compacts have 110 mm which is the original MTB size before compact drive etc The problem with this is that most old style mtb cranks will have a square taper bottom bracket. so they might not fit the fancy kit that you run on your bikes In theory campag and shimano have slightly different taper dimensions....but not important really: http://www.highpath.net/cycles/notes/04.html I was recently running an old campag centaur mtb with only the outer 2 rings fitted but the smaller was 38 Are you using a cross bike then or what? You might get an old triple mtb set on ebay and LHS ergo levers shift over anything: If you've got the 34 tooth ring and the square taper I'll lend you the chainset You could also run a 32 tooth back block- i have in 7 or 8 speed http://www.highpath.net/cycles/index.html or http://www.highpath.net/cycles/cassettes/01.html ssjavascript:emoticon('icon_bounce_3') 563-8508

2023 Subscriptions martin Posted November 17, 2008 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 17, 2008 thanks for the advice, senor shimergo. yep, bought a cross frame, and built it up using the components from my ribble winter bike. That means square taper axle, chorus 10 speed, 53/39 with a 25 at the back. Not enough for an old git like me. Got a 26 somewhere, but was looking for the boost of a 34. This evening's question. Is there any difference between campag 9 and 10 spd chainsets? Saw a good price on a centaur compact, but it claimed to be a 9 speed model. (You know I like to keep the labels all the same )

(You know I like to keep the labels all the same ) Hi Martin don't think there is much difference between 9 and 10 sp, maybe spacers between the rings slightly thinner on 10 sp. But, if you are running Chorus, then you'd need a new BB for the Centaur. Cheers DG
simon simpson
Check the BCD of the campag chainsets: it might be a funny size and not the 110 of the shimano compacts and old mtb: on the other hand the campag stuff is so cheap that new rings are not much less So what did you buy Kona? Major Jake? A Ritchey? Surely not a Litespeed? Why not come out on a Wednesday night with the GMBC bunch? 2 or 3 hours in the dark- relatively technical- some crossers - some single speed etc good bunch and a cup of tea and a jet wash afterwards. ss

2023 Subscriptions martin Posted November 19, 2008 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 19, 2008 Martin Would an MTB work for XC with skinny tyres? If so then I might join you. Alan Given the earlier technical content of this thread, and as someone who has achieved expert status by riding in 1 (one) event, can I just offer a small correction? XC= cross country CX=cyclo cross There. That feels better.

Tony
Last year I used Continental Cross Country 26 x 1.5" tyres on my rigid mtb. They were the narrowest knobbly mtb tyres I could find. They have a much more aggressive tread than typical 700c cross tyres - lots of traction. Wish I had taken them off my old bike before I sold it. There are always people on MTBs but the proportion varies wildly depending on the nature of the course. Examples from last year: Mugdock (loads of gnarly singletrack) - 50/50 cross bikes vs MTBs Bannerman (traditional CX, open, fast, grassy) - 90% cross bikes I suspect Irvine will be quite a fast non-technical course but I will be using an MTB anyway as I don't own a specialist CX bike. Administrators Jannza Posted November 20, 2008 Administrators Report Share Posted November 20, 2008 What are "sand tyres" apart from ones to ride on sand as mentioned on the Irvine events page?
2023 Subscriptions martin Posted November 21, 2008 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted November 21, 2008 "bring sand tyres" does sound a bit ominous, doesn't it? I've only got the one set of tyres for this bike: Schwalbe CXpro 32's. Bought them cos they said pro, so they must be good, no? Suspect they're not going to be wide enough for a lot of sand riding. (so I've included running in my training this week ) Something a bit broader to float on the sand, with lugs out the sides probably would be better. Like the tyres Tony was talking about, for example? it's all fun anyway. come and join in, expect to get lapped (like me, more than once) and get a great workout. It's the seaside, so you're allowed pokey hats and chips afterwards.
Colin H
"Something a bit broader to float on the sand, with lugs out the sides probably would be better." So is that why you have been running?????? (body = broader than bike with lugs )
