Sunday Social Rides May/June/July

Hi Folks

This post is directed at the "30-miler/intermediate" people. Would anyone like to meet up to to put together a "runs list" for May/June? Probably looking for a minimum of 4 people. My availability over the summer is going to be quite limited.

I would suggest the clubrooms as a venue but I am not on the "real" committee so we would need to speak to a keyholder (and promise not to make a mess). At the very least it will be an opportunity to meet up for a chat and have an exchange of views.

Thanks

Tony

Bill suggested much the same at the weekend, Tony (great minds etc) and was also championing the organisation of a few 'away-days' (Arran, 3 Ferries etc) for a change of scenery so I would rope him into the meet. I'm happy to come along if my work diary will let me, otherwise certainly happy to share route posting/organisation. I remember you posted about 3/4 mths of routes last year and it was ideal. There are quite a few of the group now targeting sportives & audaxes (is that a word ?) so maybe we could turn some of these into a club meet too.

I never did get to see Beith Rocking Stone or Transmitter Hill last year - so consider those as requests !

OK the story so far -

Attending: me, Boyd, Bill, Chung, Mary, Iain

Possibly attending: Greig

Unable to attend: Brian, Matt, Jody, JohnM

Curry might be good - how would that work, do we wait till everybody turns up and then order in a takeaway for delivery? (We could get the runs list sorted while we are waiting...)

Longer club runs - yes (Cowal, 5 Ferries, for example)

Awaydays - yes (it will soon be time for the "Ayr Century" for example)

45-mile Farmwatch Specials - yes icon_rolling_smile

When we have put the runs list together I will ask a friendly forum moderator to post it as a "sticky" so that it will sit at the top of the forum.

See you Thursday

Thanks

Tony

can someone tell me where these runs fit in with the 30 milers and less fit people covering 96 miles for a beginner is just a no goer in my opinion so i get the impression i need to wait 4 weeks before i can go on a club run just doesnt suit me and im sure it wont suit others aswell

if its not broken no need to try and fix it

Greig, as a newcomer to the club, my take on this, having attended the meeting, is that there were several objectives.

The first was to try to be inclusive and come up with rides that could include a wider mix of people than just the intermediate group - hence the idea of 'social rides'. We've already had at least a couple of runs this year where people from the thirty-milers and the intermediates have set out on the same run. This gives an opportunity to people wanting to move up from the thirty-milers to take on some slightly longer runs. Last Sunday's run, for example, was planned so that there was the possibility of people adding an extra loop of about 12 miles to the basic run if that was what they wanted to do.

The second objective was to bring in a bit more variety to the runs and to spread the load, of deciding the route and leading the group, around a bit. Tony has been doing a great job for the intermediates, but we should not just be dependent on Tony doing the organising, and it's great that Bill and Mary are willing to take on some of that work.

The third was to bring in a few longer runs and 'away' days for those who want to do these and can fit them in. It was recognised that this would not suit everybody, and it was expected that local runs would be organised for these days as well.

Tony has already posted in the other thread about the thirty milers what his ideas are and I don't see a problem with setting off as a single group and splitting at some point. It just needs some positive ideas for the thirty milers - either doing their own route or how they are going to handle the rides with the 'social' group.

Hi Greig,

You'll see from Tony's list of 13 runs there's only ONE that is 96 miles, and that's a special "Away Day".

The rest of the runs are between 40-55 miles which I'm sure, with your cycling experience can handle with no problem what so ever.

I don't think you need to wait 4 weeks.

Most of these runs are tailored for existing & beginners cyclist.

Cheers
