Pre-curry night steady coast run down to West Kilbride planned with 9am start from clubhouse in Millar Street, Johnstone.

Plan may vary a wee bit, depending on weather.

If you are struggling, Darryl has rightly pointed out elsewhere that this route comes with some easy bail-out options:

1 Inverkip - up to Loch Thom,

2 Largs - up the Hailey Brae to Kilbirnie, or

3 Fairlie - straight up the Moor Road!

Being early winter, this won't be a fast run and sitting in the bunch on the flat should be quite easy. If you're in any way concerned about the distance, bring enough money for the train fare from Largs back to Johnstone.

Jim

Well done Jim. Stevie B now joining us morning and evening, probably Tommo for the run and possibly ...Dougy da cervelo

Suggest 9am from clubrooms, out by Morrisons, BOW, Kilmacolm, up to power station, down the whin, round cloch (for Tony if he wants to get the ferry) along to W Kilbride and cafe stop. Option to go up heely and be home about noon if you are time challenged.

Sounds like for the run we have

McGunson

Jim D

Alan McLean

Maybe Tony

with some others in the evening.

Not forgetting that Marco van Whitehead, Simon Simplex and the newish Big Al (ie, not the koorier) have already committed themselves to this venture. Matt, fresh from his recent triumph at the Spateston 30mph sign, may also be along.

All sounds good.

General forecast isn't too bad, although it could be a bit fresh. Nothing a good curry won't put right again.

Paul, do you fancy meeting at the cross at Lochwinnoch for the run to the club house? 08:30?

Cheers

3 of the development squad joined the curry squad this morning for a wee run down the coast

James , Greg and Claire were warmly welcomed to join

McGunson , Jim D , Ramsay , Kenny , Paul , Matt and Alan McL along with fat director sportive ;-)

This squad was treated to a red arrows moment at Brookfield r/b ( or deaf hillock r/b to give its proper name) as the bunch split in formation left & right :smash

This regroupment allowed Claire to turn and join in , as she was being fashionably late ;-)

Cycle track to Kilmacolm and then down the Clune , on approaching the new Tesco Paul Mcd was subjected to a serious line of play infringement  by McGunson resulting in Paul ending up in Tesco carpark. With fancy manouvres like that McGunson you will be welcomed at bike polo on Friday nights :-P

Greg had to turn at Greenock shopping mall as work commitments beckoned :-x

THe 2 remaining development squad riders were directed up the Spango valley and onto a snow clad climb to Loch Thom.

The curry squad carrried on round Cloch ( full report to follow)

The climb to Loch Thom was climbed in snow shower and we dodged snowballs falling from the tree. Once up at Cornalees it was blue skies for a stunning ride round the loch , we even encountered another mad cyclist coming the opposite way

The drop back down into Greenock brought cold hands and feet

So a blast along West ferry was used to warm us up again Oh ya dancer !

We left Claire at top of Bishopton drag and headed back over Monkeyhouse, a good mornings run in mixed conditions , but sore legs all round.

Special mention to Claire who performed excellenty on her first long run of the winter, in extreme conditions Oh ya dancer !Oh ya dancer !

We were able to ease off the pace a bit once the development squad had veered off for work and serious hill training.

Weather was not kind from Gourock to Largs and idle chatter was noticeably reduced.

Sun came out, just in time for cafe stop in Largs.

Much relief all round that we had not followed through with the original plan for Tighnabruach and most seemed content to take the easy route home from West Kilbride but not before Alan had attacked off the front a few times to set up photo opportunities.

Second cafe stop of the day was at Lochwinnoch for those lazier members of the bunch who wished to exchange pleasantries with the Renfrew Lavatory Bunch who themselves had thought better of a weekend trip to Perth.

Overall, I think we just about earned a guilt-free curry + nan bread + pakora this evening.

1. This was no easy winter run. Paul and Jim were prominent at the front at 35kph on the flat. Matt, Kenny and I just sat at the back and tried to hang on.

2. Utterly horrible sleet and surface water ensured thorough pre-Largs drenching.

3. Two cafe stops were so good I think I'd like a third stop on my next run.

4. Don't try to take photos from a moving bike with gloves, one handed, in winter, with cold hands. Photos to follow.

5. Sun ensured dryness by the end and a sunkissed trip home with snowy hills across the Clyde. More Scottish brilliantness.

6. The Development Squad looked strong but a bit underequipped for winter conditions. Well done for getting round.

See youse all for a curry in 45 minutes.

Alan

Postscript to Development squad finale.

On approaching trafic lights at outskirts of Johnstone we encountered a Lotus driver at the lights. We pulled alongside and held onto railings for a quick getaway. Noticing us he eyeballed us and started to rev up inviting a wee race Oh ya dancer !Oh ya dancer !

Now we aint Chris Hoy but we were up for the challenge :rockets

Even a fat director sportive can come out the blocks quick over the short distance ;-)

3 2 1 green :uzi a quick handsling off the fence and the dash to next set of lights.

8-)8-)8-)

JWCC 1 Lotus driver 0

followed by us passing a string of slow moving cars Oh ya dancer !

nice ending to a good day out Hello, beer !!

Colin Chapman of Lotus was the great exponent of increased performance through added lightness. Of course, there are very few supercars that weigh a bit less than 20 lbs, so we cyclists have a distinctly unfair advantage. The poor driver didn't stand a chance!

Nice report Alan. What you have humbly not mentioned is that you were able to cruise by us one handed to take the photos  clearly a man in condition for the new year triathlon.

Or that Darryl and Ramsay were cruising up the hills whilst engaging in idle chatter............................

Oh ya dancer !

looking forward to some genuine 'on the road shots' of snotters and grime.

Sorry i could not join you but i was instructed by fellow team mates to join them for the usual ride departing the renfra bogs

Seems the Perth trip was cancelled right enough.

The ride turned out to be brutal :-(

Cant be going that bady as i hung on for dear life behind grey hound Crumlish's wheel :angryfire up every drag that he attacked on......

Still recovering now

Paul sorry for not coming out for the curry either!

I will make it up to return down at Christmas for our (your) ritual torture training session departing the Bull garage. Oh ya dancer !

Glad you had a good evening.

See you soon,

Stevie
