stevie reacted to chung in Summer Bikes - Before Storage!
Hi Folks,
It’s almost that time of the year to swop out the summer bikes & bring out the trusty old winter hack.
So I thought I would share a few tips that I’ve learnt in the past, to do to your pride & joy, before temporary retiring your summer beauties in the comfort of your shed/garage/lounge/bedroom/safe etc (delete as appropriate )
Before storage
1. I would obviously recommend giving your bike a good wash (or at least a thorough wipe down) but make sure everything is nice & dry after you’ve done so. No one likes rust on you bike/bike parts!
2. Chain - Clean & re-lube this part thoroughly, I use a “Park Tool†chain bath, works great but other means are just as good & dry lube!
3. Once chain is nice & clean, shift chain to small chainring on the front & smallest cog at the back - this put the chain into the “least stress positionâ€, theoretically making your chain last just a wee bit longer (if you can pop the chain off the front rings & just rest it loose even better - but might be messy) & your gear cable are not in tension too, again longing the life of these particular parts.
4. Oil/Lube all pivot points - front/rear mechs, brake pivots etc for obvious reasons.
5. Loosen the seat post clamp & take the seat post out & re-grease/apply copper seize before sliding it back into place (make sure you mark the position first with masking tape etc before you take out the seat post, so you know exactly how far to put it back on) remember to re-torque properly accordingly.
I’ve seem seized seat post before from moisture in this particular area & it’s a right pain to deal with, prevention is key here!
In fact, I make a point of pulling out & re-install all my bikes seat post every few months just in case!
6. Check that the condition of your tyres are still nice & ridable come next summer, check for deep cuts or worn parts. If it need replacing, then end of year/Xmas sales are usually a good times to pick up some new tyres. I always buy frequently perishable parts before I absolutely need it, yes I am a hoarder :-)
7. Brake pads/blocks - as above.
8. Maybe it’s a good time to replace your bar-tapes, it should be replaced as frequent as possible …….. I love new bar tape, cheapest way to make your bike feel brand new :-)
Hope these tips help, but if you guys can think of any, I would love to hear & learn more please!
It might sounds a lot of work but it's well worth it & saves you money as well, but if you can’t be bother, then there’s an alternative - just buy a brand new bike EVERY SUMMER :-)
I suppose these things don’t just apply to doing it before you store the bike, it’s good practice to do these things through out the year when you’re riding anyway!
Happy bike maintaining
Cheers

5 of us set out from m the club bang on 9:30. Ian dropped out at Lugton, followed by Graham at Stewarton, so the rest of us carried on in a nice through and off from Kilmaurs to Troon, where we had a very nice break at a cafe, then back home into the wind. A very enjoyable run out this morning in dry, cool but a bit windy conditions.

Rothesay weekend with quite few wheelers going over so i thought segment of the week over there.
Kerrycroy to Mt Stuart gatehouse

Will anyone be daft enough to launch a solo attack on the first climb of the course so they can win the segment of the week bragging rights?

thanks Stevie, in the complete absence of any other interest I have created a league just for me, JWCC ToB 2017
League number: 956316813, others are welcome to join
I would get out more but I have a boxset of the 1987 Tour of Poland to work through.

Rest Day Wrap Up
So at the first rest day it's been all action in the JWCCFV.
After stretching out an early lead Stevie was comfortably at the top of the board with the double header GC team of Froome and Nibali with Billy et al all but given up hope of clawing back the deficit.
This year the Veulta has not been kind to the sprinters but Trentin made up some points for those foolhardy enough to select him for their teams.
A stage win for Alaphilippe also boosted his numbers.
Marc and Charlie will regret selecting a sick Degenkolb who has tanked his team!
A bold choice of Contador may well pay off for Paul but his off day has hurt his GC points accumulation - his improving form (blood bag anyone) is inspiring.
De Gents time on the front in break always has helped Eric and Mark's numbers.
Let us be honest If you haven't picked froome, and barring all disasters, you'll be hard pushed to make it up now!

Just the 5 out tonight - myself, Alan, Scott, Joseph and new member Rachid. Tough night for their first Thursday night group ride, weather absolutely miserable but they all did well.
Was very rainy and gloomy so made the call to go up and do some laps of the Peesweep circuit instead rather than head to Stewarton and get caught out in the dark. Due to change of route no sprint or KOM sections agreed in advance but as its my rules i can make it up as i go along - Alan was first for the last fast lap so 6 points to him for the win, 4 points for everyone else (apart from me i'll just take the 1 for turning up).

So bike is back.
Damage to the seat stay is superficial (first scratch is always the worst init).
Shop have replaced the chain and rear mech (with the new ultegra version no less) and put the originally spec'd crankset (FSA SLK Carbon) back on and its running sweet as a nut.
Still have blisters on the soles of my feet from walking down the Glen Fruinn!

Hi all,
Despite a few late call offs, 6 of us came out to play on this run - Al, Eric, Ian Ginty, Richard (a rare sighting in a Bunch run as the Nessie Monster ), Stevie & myself set off from the Bridge with hope of some half decent summer weather!
Pretty event free before the (always nice) cafe stop in Kilcreggan apart from the greyish sky rather than the sun we were half expecting
Then it all kicked off after the stop - first I had a front flat curtesy of dirty rain washed road which my uber supple Italian rubber ain’t designed for, duly fixed & off we went again.
Then disaster struck for Stevie up the Glen Fruinn climb as his brand spanking new super duper Cevelo S3 had a major mechanical which render it a bit of a mess, a quick SOS call back to base had him sorted for a rescue of man & machine. We reluctantly left him to gently walked back down to the main road - poor Stevie (even worst for his wife/partner who had to drive all that way to rescue him ) we were pretty sure we could have converted it into a single speed & at least had him ride to Helensbrough for the train ………. oh well :-)
So, the 5 of us continued on home via Balloch, where upon Richard & myself stayed on the Northside as the others cross the bridge.
Thankfully everyone got back ok & the sun finally came out when I got home ……. typical!
Thanks to Ian for posting the run & the rest for the wheels today, thoroughly enjoyed it despite the few issues & well done to all the testers on the 25TT on the West ferry, especially Billy for a very good time indeed, chapeau chaps!
I haven’t posted a ride report for a while, the ease of Strava have made me lazy in that respect, anyhow thanks for reading & hope to see youse on the road soon!
Cheers
Chung

Not long home.
Took the bike straight to the shop - they reckon the quick link has failed and thats dragged the mech round. Left it with them so we'll see.
There is some damage to the inside of the seat stay but it might just be the paint work and not the actual carbon.
