CycloSportives 2009

Recommended Posts

Those of you who keep half an eye on the Cyclosport website (www.cyclosport.org) will have noticed that there are several new events in Scotland this year, and in fact there are now so many it's getting quite hard to choose between them. I've made a list of all the Scottish sportives that I know about, below. (The ones in red are sold out.) There is a heavy emphasis on the Borders region with quite a lot of route overlap.

May 2nd - Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge - http://www.drumlanrigchallenge.btik.com/

May 9th - Bealach Beag - http://www.handsonevents.co.uk/Events/B ... iption.htm

May 17th - Burns Coastal Challenge - http://www.dumfriescc.btik.com/p_Burns_ ... rtive.ikml

May 17th - Etape Caledonia - http://www.etapecaledonia.co.uk/

May 30th - Sky Sportive - http://www.handsonevents.co.uk/Events/Skye/skye.htm

June 13th - Cairngorm 100 - http://www.handsonevents.co.uk/Events/C ... rngorm.htm

July 12th - Southern Uplands Sportive - http://www.pumpkinpartners.co.uk/10.html

Aug 1st - Selkirk Road Sportive - http://www.gorebikewearsportives.com/selkirk.php

Aug 2nd - Islay Sportive - http://www.rideofthefallingrain.net/

Aug 8th - Edinburgh Sportive - http://www.cyclosport.org/eventdetails. ... entid=2259

Aug 23rd - Ken Laidlaw Sportive - http://www.hamishdsmith.co.uk/cycling.htm

Sep 5th - Bealach Mor - http://www.handsonevents.co.uk/Events/B ... iption.htm

Sep 6th - Tour of Tweeddale - http://www.peeblescycling.org/index.php ... &Itemid=45

Sep 26th - Ullapool Sportive - http://www.handsonevents.co.uk/Events/U ... lapool.htm

Oct 31st - Braveheart Ride - http://www.braveheartcyclingfund.com/Ev ... =WhereWhen

Also there are a few in the Cumbria/Northumberland area that I think are worth considering as the driving distance to get to them is not too far (they're considerably closer than the Bealach na Ba for example):

June 13th - Northern Rock Cyclone - http://www.northernrockcyclone.co.uk/Cy ... llenge.asp

Sep 6th - Cumberland Challenge - http://www.thecumberlandchallenge.co.uk/

Sep 20th - Cumbrian Killer - http://www.davelloydmegachallenge.com/d ... aspx?id=42

Anybody interested in doing any of these? I would like to do a couple of them if possible. It would be good to get a wee group of clubmates to ride with and share petrol cost/carbon footprint...

Personally I think the ones that most interest me are the Southern Uplands Sportive (I like the idea of that summit finish) and any one of the last three I've listed (simply because I don't really know the roads in those areas.) I'm not really interested in travelling to any event that's far enough away to require an overnight stay, as it's too expensive and too big an ask from a family point of view.

Tony,

Have had a brief look through your list and have noted below a couple that I might be interested in. Will have to check against my race calendar however I have been thinking about a couple of Sportive type rides a bit later in the season.

The ones I might be interested in are:

July 12th - Southern Uplands Sportive - http://www.pumpkinpartners.co.uk/10.html

Aug 1st - Selkirk Road Sportive - http://www.gorebikewearsportives.com/selkirk.php

Sep 6th - Cumberland Challenge - http://www.thecumberlandchallenge.co.uk/

Oct 31st - Braveheart Ride - http://www.braveheartcyclingfund.com/Ev ... =WhereWhen

With a nice spread of about a month between each I'am pretty sure I could sell the idea of riding these to the Mrs with some quality family time in between

Will check calendar and let you know for sure tomorrow on my plans.

Cheers

Colin

If there's a possee of JWCC then I'd also be interested in doing some of these, especially those in blue (below).

May 17th - Burns Coastal Challenge - http://www.dumfriescc.btik.com/p_Burns_ ... rtive.ikml

May 30th - Sky Sportive - http://www.handsonevents.co.uk/Events/Skye/skye.htm

June 13th - Cairngorm 100 - Aug 2nd - Islay Sportive -

I've been thinking about the Drumlanrig ride (2nd May) for a while and I think I even mentioned it to Darryl a while back. If there was a few JWCC riders going, I would be keen. I'm riding the Etape du Dales two weeks later, so it would be a good warm up.

Probably not going to do any more, as I generally want to concentrate on shorter race events and also the entry fees for sportives is often a bit much to be doing lots of them (I'm too Scottish!).

Anymore takers for the Drumlanrig?

Ramsay

I'll be sending my entry off for the Drumlanrig event on Monday.

Just entered (on-line) the Northern Rock Cyclone. Looks great. Going to camp en famille. Friday night criteriums, Saturday the sportive ride, and Sunday the Beaumont Trophy Premier Calender complete with foreign pros :-o

A cracking weekend.

As Tony says I had a go in the Southern Upland Sportif last year. I really enjoyed the event.

I found it to be well organised, with the only downsides being the bottleneck of people at the signing on and i could really have done with an additional feed station, still maybe i should just train more.

I am definately hoping to have a go again this year if this is any sort of recommendation and given that its only about an 1hr 30min drive its not a bad option.

I am also looking to take part in another couple this year so will keep an eye on topic

Below is a copy of an e-mail i received about this years ride

Dear All,

As promised when you entered the inaugural edition of the Southern Uplands Sportive last year, I am giving you a wee heads up[ ahead of everybody else about the launch of this year's event.

The ride has been re-named for the 2nd edition so the 2009 RADAR RIDE (see what I've done there??) will take place on Sunday 12th July. It will start, as last year, in Wanlockhead and take in all your favourite climbs - including the hideous 20% slopes of the now-infamous 'Wall of Talla'. But this year it will finish across the ridge at the summit of Green Lowther. For those of you who managed to finish last year's event, when you get to the inflatable arch alongside the radar station itself, this year's event won't be finished! It will turn left for another mile and around 30m of climbing. If you thought last year's finishing stretch was a bit sadistic then this time around you'd best put as much time into your mental preparation as you do for the physical!

Anyway, the event will officially be launched on Thursday 16th April.

BUT, for you guys, the web-site and entry system will be opened on Monday 13th April which gives you a few days head start. If anyone who entered last year happens, for whatever reason, to miss the launch and fails to get one of the 350 places available, just drop me an email at this address and I'll get you in.

I look forward to seing you all again in Wanlockhead in July. The highest point on Scotland's highest road awaits!

Regards,

Peter.[/quote]

I am going to enter again this year, anyone else?

Don't miss out on the Bethany Edinburgh Sportive. It's a cracking route and easy for you to get to starting just off the Edinburgh City By Pass at Bonnyrigg. It's all on quiet roads and the surface on them is fairly good. 110 miles for the big one (70 short route) 8000ft of climb (5 000ft on the short one). You can enter now, or next pay day. Showers, cakes and even cheese and jam sandwiches.
