  1. I'm planning to cycle to see some of the TT on Cumbrae.

Leaving The Pullman in Kilmacolm at 09:00, going to Largs via Brisbane Glen and getting a ferry around 11:00 (their running every 15 mins.)

About 20 miles for the outboud leg, return options include Hayle Brae and Fairlie Moor with extra miles and hills.

All welcome to come along for all or part of the day.

  2. Sounds like a good trip Chung, I have other commitments at that time so can only look forward to your tour report.

I endorse Alan's suggestion of a bar bag, great for navigation, snacks, camera and the like.  I use a Carradice one, it's not perfect but it's not the most expensive on the market and it's done the job for about 3,000 miles of touring.  For panniers I stand by our Ortliebs easy to mount and dismount fro the bike, never let any water in, and after years of sometimes hard use still look like new, though if your going lightweight you might get away with bikepacking gear.  for a loaded bike I'd be tempted to go up to 28mm tyres if you've got a frame that will take them.

I suggest booking up accommodation before you go, we told them we would be travelling by bike and found all our European accommodations were happy to store the bike securely indoors.

A few photos of bikes loaded for touring to get you in the mood, note it's the same luggage on various bikes....

  3. I use Android, but have had similar problems in the past with old phones that I put down to the phone being to 'busy' doing other things.  I found that making sure it didn't have to many apps running in the background, switching of the wifi, and making sure it had lots of memory helped.

On Android there are lots of apps that can record record your ride for you and then upload it to Strava when you finish - I assume there are similar ones for Apple.  They can also work as a cycle computer with a suitable handlebar mount.  you could buy several good Android devices for the price of a Garmin and then choose with apps to record you rides on based on your favorite on the day.

  4. A fairly short trip as I've not been out for a while, so I've plotted a 40 mile round trip on Strava, out via Dunlop, returning by Kilburnie and back road to Lochwinnoch.  It should get us to the Mill shortly after it opens at 11 for the best choice of scones and cakes.

09:30 at the Club Rooms, all welcome - alternative routes always an option for if anyone is more of less ambitious.

  5. I got a disc gravel bike a couple of years ago as a winter bike, and have used it as you plan to: road tyres and mudguards in the winter, and the supplied CX style tyres in the summer for off road.

I've been really pleased with it in both roles, I got it as a previous years model on a Black Friday deal from Evans, so it was close to second hand prices, but without the wear and tear.  If you can wait a couple of months there should be some deals coming along on 2017 models as the 2018 ones arrive in the shops.
