Tony got a reaction from ginty001 in Petition- To introduce a permanent, minimum passing distance when overtaking cyclists
Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the "miminum passing distance" law has been implemented in other European countries (such as France, Spain, Germany) for many years now. It may be difficult to enforce but it's a statement (or a declaration of intent, if you like) which must surely help the case of the cyclist, and help to improve driver education if nothing else.
The only downside I can see is that many motorists would demand that cyclists be forced to ride in single file...a fair trade-off in my opinion.

Try attacking it with a belt sander, using heavy gauge sandpaper. This will definitely remove the scratch.

Tony reacted to Kenny MacDonald in Sunday 21st Feb 2016 - Reliability #3 - Sinclair Street
This reliability brings back memories of the time I did a track stand at traffic lights at the bottom of Sinclair Street . The local church had just come out and the congregation was streaming across the road . When the lights went to green I jumped on pedals to get a quick getaway . Only to end up on the deck in a heap , as the chain had snapped LOL much to the amusement of the rest of the bunch. I wish I could say it was my super strength but alas it was a batch of dodgy chains . I can recall at least 4 other club members suffering a similar fate that season.
Another memorable reliability run round that circuit was stopped by the police just after Cardross . Our bunch was about 25 strong and we had caught the Glasgow district CTC who had about 30 in their bunch . A Police inspector pulled us over and told us to ride in single file , realising this would cause even more of a hold up for traffic we duly obliged without any discussion . It was a sight to behold as the group rode into Helensburgh in one long line .
ps it took an eternity to get to back of bunch when you had done a spell

Another lovely ride tonight, under a full moon:

Yes Ian a 500 lumen light should be fine. I don't think mine is any brighter than that.

Night ride on minor roads at a fairly pedestrian pace, mainly to get some miles in. Route will be one of these three:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/11108356
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/11108168
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/11105146
Mainly c-roads. See link below:
http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Classified_Unnumbered_Road
...expect gravel, wet leaves, pine-needle mush etc
The plan is to leave Miller St at 1930 and be back between 2130 and 2200.
You will need good lights and the front one needs to be powerful enough to light up the road. Also bear in mind what I have said about leaves, gravel etc - these and other small obstacles are harder to see at night even with a powerful headlamp. MTB/CX bike recommended.

Awesome ride last night...I was expecting to encounter some flooding but just found a few big puddles, nothing major. The roads were as quiet as the grave, didn't see a single car until I joined the B776 (Bowfield road).
It's hard to describe how beautiful Lochwinnoch looked from the top of the golf course road. A carpet of orange pinpricks twinkling behind a curtain of soft drizzle, like the campfires of a small army occupying the hillside above the loch.
Night riding is great!

Night ride on minor roads at a fairly pedestrian pace, mainly to get some miles in. Just wondering if anyone else would like to come along.
Here is the route:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/11108168
..it's 25 miles, mainly on c-roads, quite hilly. Be aware that there will be a lot of wet leaves and some gravel on the roads.
The plan is to leave Miller St at 1830 and be back between 2030 and 2100.

Tony got a reaction from KennyS in Sun 13/09/15 The 50.1 Milers
Proposed plan for Sunday:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7389996
...it's 50.1 miles on minor roads. Leaving Miller St at 0900, returning about 1230. No cafe/tea-room on this route but plenty of wooded areas so foraging for roots/berries is a definite possibility. (As long as you're quick)
Post here if you're coming.
Thanks

Tony reacted to KennyS in Forum Tidy-up
Slight changes overnight on this part of the forum where, in order to provide more visibility into what, where and when each bunch are doing their thing, I've split each bunch up into sub-forums
Could i request that any new topics are started in the respective sub-forums
There are a number of other runs going out that fall into the miscellaneous category and suggestions on how we treat these would be appreciated. At present I have left these unde the 'Club Runs' folder - which may not be a bad place to leave them if they don't fit in the Sunday, Wednesday or Midweek Training runs
Please also add the full date when posting the run. Makes it a bit easier for all to follow

No disrespect to anyone but I don't have time to do the Dunoon thing, so I'm heading out early-ish as usual, just wondering if anyone would like to come along.
Here is the route:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7389999
...it's 49.6 miles, mainly c-roads, quite hilly, with variable surfaces.
I'm planning to leave Miller St at 0800 and return at 1130-ish, maybe 1200 at the latest. If anyone's interested please post here.
Dankon

Nice to see you taking an interest in Esperanto Kenny. It's the language of the future.
I went out on Sunday but left at 7am and didn't bother to stop by Miller St. I stuck to the advertised route though -
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/725938747
It was an epic ride and Knockentiber has never looked so good.

Heading out on Sunday early-ish, just wondering if anyone would like to come along.
Here is the route:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6350425
...it's 48 miles, mainly c-roads, quite hilly, with variable surfaces. (If you are a "shiny bike person" you might not like it...)
I'm planning to leave Miller St at 0800 and return at 1130-ish, maybe 1200 at the latest. Please note there are no cafes, tea-rooms, bagel-shops or other retail establishments on the above route.
Please also note, this is not a "Club Run" - it's just me messing about on my bike. I'm quite slow but happy to be towed along by faster riders, also happy to adjust my pace to suit slower riders (somewhat less likely).
Dankon

Tony got a reaction from Campbell Hutcheson in Club Run Sunday 15th March
That is a nice route Chung. I need to be home by midday though, and if I were to join you I'd have to turn back quite early and miss all the nice bits. That's the reason why I never go north of the river these days.
I don't understand the point of the Restricted Gear Time Trial. I thought restricted gears were supposed to be a way of providing a level playing field for juniors, but I did the Restricted Gear thing once (about 6 years ago) and there was no-one there under 35. Each to his own I suppose. It's a bit like mowing your lawn with a push-mower to show the neighbours how hard you are.

Tony got a reaction from chung in Club shorts - medium
Saw you again on Sunday Richie.
Don't be surprised if you end up having to give the shorts away for free. I had a pair of them once and gave them away to Ian McAulay. For me the turning point came when I was stopped at traffic lights and another cyclist pulled up and said "are you wearing those for a dare?". After that I decided to stick to black shorts. You can't go wrong with black, eh?
