First of all Hello!

Secondly thanks to whoever saw my fb post and sorted out my access quick and efficient good job!

Now down to business.

I used to do a bit of cycling and and hoping to get back into it alongside some of you guys. My aim is in a couple of weeks to join up with the Sunday morning 30miler (easy group?) which brings me to my question..... What kind of pace does this group keep? Just trying to decide if i need to improve my fitness first or if I'll manage to hang onto the back sucking someones wheel!!

The reason it will be a couple of weeks is that I currently don't have a suitable bike ( I hope my wife doesn't read this as she will question what the 3 in the garage are for?!?!). So need to get a new groupset ordered and fitted to the an old 531 bike i have that currently has a very old 105 groupset complete with downtube shifters that I seem to have forgotten how to ride and are liable to make me crash.

So thats me for now but looking forward to getting some chat with you guys and meeting a few of you in a few weeks time.

PS the other 2 bike are an old trek mountain bike and a recently refurbed 1978 (older than me) Claude Butler that I had powder coated and I built up as a fixie that will be my commuting bike once my office gets the shower situation sorted.

PPS this is a really long first post.

PPPS Really need to stop now!

Ian

Don't really no war sort of pace the 30 milers do but they usually go at a pace to suit all so you want have any bother

The intermediates go at about the same pace I think again don't no the numbers but they tend to ride at a relaxed club run pace so either or might suit

The main bunch might go a bit faster sometimes and may not always stop for coffee

Hope that helps

Ian,

Firstly, welcome to the club.

Regards raiding the missus's shoe fund for a new bike, don't disregard your old road bike. If the frame is sound, consider upgrading what you already have got meantime. My winter bike is a 1992 vintage Dawes, 531 tubing with much of the original 105 kit still in place - cranks, front chain rings, brake callipers, front mech, and until recently rear mech too. Consider perhaps acquiring some STI levers and installing cable bosses on the down tube and then a pair of cheap 'make do' wheels and you'll have the guts of a reasonable commuter/winter bike, which would serve you well while this current ice age continues and while you pore over the acres of carbon porn and other shiny things in deciding which new bike to buy - that is a whole new thread on its own!!!!

I won't open up the whole Shim vs Campag debate but I have found the upper range groupsets of 20 years ago from Shimano to be bomb proof. I have no idea what nick the components are in but after a right good cleaning mine came up looking pretty good and more importantly functioning.

In answer to where to start, the 30 milers is the right initial choice.

Cheers

Mark

Hello Ian and welocome to the 2nd friendliest club in Scotland ( have never met the #1)

Not knowing how fit you are here is some stats on the 30 milers

Clubrun normally between 12-16 mph but If were pushing ourselves this can go upto 18 mph

Our mileage will also go up and sometimes we do around 65 miles

Now the good part no-one ever gets left behind no matter what we've all had bad days on the bike :-)

9 times out of 10 we will have a cafe stop along the route

The laughs start at the top of the first hill when everyone is laughing at me trying to get up it and mostly doesn't stop till the end of the run

Hence the reason the 30 milers is the best bunch hope to see you soon

Thanks for the warm welcome Guys but woo woo woo woo woo........Hawd the bus the 30 milers sometimes do 65miles????? lol

Also the 105 groupset I have it perfectly servicable at the moment and the only bit I really feel the need to change are the levers to have brakes and gears together what are the chances of this being possible with my exsisting setup?

Sorry for the noob questions!

Hi guys. Had a look at the bike last night and the cassette is only a 6 speed so what would I need to change in order to make this an 8/9 speed with sti levers. Rear derailer is a definite I guess but what about the front and or the rear wheel?

Hi Iain,

Welcome to the club and hope to see you out soon!

In terms of your plan on converting your 6 speed to work with STI interested levers. I'm afraid it's not that straight forward, as far as I know, STI started with 7 or 8 speed, as the following link seems to suggest:

http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=15961833

If that is indeed the case, then I'm afraid your only option is to get a STI gear system with at least shifters for gear/brake, maybe front mech & rear mech & 7-8 speed cassette of course. Ebay is usually good for the used 2nd hand parts if you're working on a tight budget.

As for your wheel, it depends if the freehub is a screw on type also on your existing hub?

I hope that gives you an idea on your current predicament. Of course I could be completely wrong in this, your best bet is to maybe do some major search on the web or YouTube. Your local bike shop could be a source for help too!

Best of luck

Cheers

Chung

Ian,

I would imagine that there will be a 30 milers run this weekend, although it does sometimes depend on individual's availability and of course the weather (there are some, including myself, who can be fair weather cyclists at times)!

Keep checking the club runs section.

Hope you manage to get out and enjoy the run with the club.

Cheers,

Ramsay
