2023 Subscriptions ginty001 Posted August 30, 2012 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted August 30, 2012 Charlie, I use the following rear light right through the winter and find it excellent http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cat ... t-ec011592 As for front lights it really depends whether he is going to be on any unlit roads. If not then something like this would be fine as a way of being seen. http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cat ... t-ec024626 On the other hand if he's riding non-lit country roads i would suggest an off-road re-chargeable light that actually lights up the road, but these are much more expensive...probably starting at £100 upwards.. I use this one which i find really good... http://www.evanscycles.com/products/moo ... 0#features Hope this is helpful... Ian
2023 Subscriptions P McDonald Posted August 30, 2012 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted August 30, 2012 Charlie I would only add that the rear led type light which you can get for about £10 are very effective - especially if you get 2 and have one flashing, and obviously a back up if one fails. al yuille
A lot of the GMBC guys use these. Fantastic power and good bat life - Incredible value for money. Not very waterproof but can be sorted. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/mj-808e-ha ... 8650-57100
Committee Alan McLean Posted August 30, 2012 Committee Report Share Posted August 30, 2012 Charlie My usual annual plug is for lumicycle lights. I have two of the 4 led version which give fantastic light on unlit roads but too much for the city. They need a dipped version really but are superb for going down small lanes at 30 kph. If you just want to be seen, rather than see, then pay a lot less and the smaller exposure one is great. I have one on my helmet. Some of the deal extreme eBay/Chinese ones are great but not such high quality as exposure and lumicycle. Alan
Tony
+1 for the MagicShine lights as recommended by Al. Regardless of whether he will be riding on lit/unlit roads I would also recommend a hi-vis vest of the type road-workers and guys on building sites tend to wear. Bike shops sell them but you can also get them in B&Q for a lot less, and you can customise them by stitching on extra bits of Scotchlite tape. This can become an absorbing hobby in itself

2023 Subscriptions Ramsay Posted August 31, 2012 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted August 31, 2012 Charlie, Bit pissed sitting in Islay, but I swear by the Smart lights for the rear. The uneven half watt flash is just great and very noticeable, although I have just bought an exposure flash which is also very visible. I have four lights on my commuter! Can't have too many!!!!
