Erskine Century Ride 2007

We might still be waiting on Bob Sharp developing the photies of the 2006 edition from his pin-hole camera but plans are already underway for the 2007 edition

Sunday 5th August 2007 is the date for your diaries. Those organising the Bealach na Ba have obviously anticpated this date and organised their event for 4 weeks later so there's no excuse not to ride them both ;-)

There will likely be a wee change for 2007. In a break with tradition the ride will not follow the A82 Loch Lomond-side and A83 Rest and Be Thankful. Instead, it will probably be straight down to Western Ferries at Gourock for the short crossing to Dunoon.

Of course the benefit of going straight to Dunoon means there's more time to ride around the Cowal Pensinsula on decent roads with little or no traffic Oh ya dancer !Oh ya dancer !

The final route has yet to be finalised but expect names like Loch Tarsan, Loch Striven, Glendaruel, Strachur, Loch Eck to feature. There might even be a few other names like Tighnabruaich, Otter Ferry and Ardentinny thrown in before heading back over on the Western Ferries and up the road to Erskine

More details in the coming weeks

Sunday 5th August 2007 is the date for this year’s Johnstone Wheelers Erskine Ride in aid of Erskine Hospital.

Entry will be £8 with all 'profits' going to Erskine Hospital

This years’ route has been planned to take in some of the quietest roads on the scenic Cowal Peninsula along with the option for some of the best climbs in the Central Belt

The main route for this year’s Erskine Century Ride will be Erskine Hospital direct to the Western Ferries at Gourock. Once on the Cowal Peninsula it will be Loch Tarsan, Loch Striven, Glendaruel, Strachur, Hunter’s Quay and back to Erskine Hospital (approx 80 miles)

There will be additional options en-route for those looking for that bigger challenge.

The first option is the steep climb over Ballochandrain to Otter Ferry and then the coastal road (B 8000) along Loch Fyne to Strachur (additional 6 miles)

The second option, on the return from Strachur, is the steep climb from the Whistlefield Inn on Loch Eck over Glen Finart to Ardentinny and then the coastal road along Long and the Holy Loch to Hunter’s Quay (additional 6 miles)

Of course the third option is to take in both Otter Ferry and Ardentinny, which would give a total of just over 90 miles for the ride. Not quite the centuries of previous years but feel free to do both climbs at least twice to make up the miles

· It’s not a race. It’s a social ride

· As in previous years a Broomwagon will support the ride. You should, however, be confident of completing the distance unaided.

· The ride will be covered by Third Party Insurance through Everyday Cycling

· If you wish to raise sponsorship then official 'Erskine Century Ride' sponsor forms can be provided.

· Return-journey ferry ticket from Dunoon to Gourock is included in the entry fee.

· The routes may be run both clockwise and anti-clockwise depending on numbers

· It is planned to limit the number of entries to 150.

Tea and coffee available at the start with story telling, reasonably-priced snacks, and / or BBQ (weather permitting) 'til 6.30pm to raise further funds at the finish

On-line entry will soon be available through the Johnstone Wheelers website http://www.johnstone-wheelers.co.uk/century_display.php

Well, what can be said about the weather? It was unfortunately rather a wet feature of the day yesterday!

The ride on the other hand was great - the Cowal peninsula was a tough but spectular choice of route.

Of those of us who left at 8am, many had never ridden the Loch Striven or Otter Ferry roads and were suitably humbled by the hills.

We had one rather nasty crash victim in Robert Heron, who was able to get back on his bike only to find his bike unable to get back on the road!! A local hero rescued him and brough thim to Strachur where he was able to catch the broom wagon home.

A split occured at Ardentinny loop with a few hardy mountain goats heading round the final steep climb, while others headed for the ferry some stopping for lunch at the Coylet (leaving behind a soggy trail of evidence). Across the water, the fine weather continued as we got the heads down for the final 17 miles to Erskine.

Karen G then puntured on the sodding slip road to Bishopton, by this time hysteria had set in due to 'trench foot' style symptoms as we fumbled around in the p***ing rain to fix the punture and get the last few miles completed.

Not sure whether the BBQ ever happened, sorry I didn't come in for it if it did but the homing instinct had kicked in by @ 4pm and Maryhill beckoned.

Thanks for organising this again.

Woohoo! I'm a mountain goat, apparently.

You must have had a whopping lunch because even after doing the Ardentinny loop we spent an hour back at Erskine waiting for the bunch which still hadn't turned up by 4pm.

GPS track for nerds on the Club runs forum.

Regards

As promised the weather was roasting. In fact, it was the warmest day of the year. In London

A little further north and west and it was cooler and a great deal wetter. In fact the rain didn’t stop from the time the first riders signed on at 7am until well after the last riders made it back and the BBQ was turned off and packed away.

40 riders set off in various sizes of groups for the Western Ferry at Gourock. Some decided that the base route up Glendaruel was sufficient in such weather. Some others climbed the Ballochandrain in the hope that the sun would be shining on Otter Ferry to no avail.

The café at Strachur was a welcome to sight to the riders even if the riders didn’t seem to be a welcome sight to the proprietor. :-? Some stayed for refreshments. Others headed south for the delights of the climb over Glen Finart to Ardentinny. The sensible headed for the Coylet Inn for what seems to have been 5 course lunch or the haven that’s known as Sheila’s Diner at the Cothouse Services before boarding the ferry back to Gourock and the home run It's Party time!

Thanks to the following for helping the event run smoothly

Thanks also to the following for their fantastic support of this event

However the biggest vote of thanks again must go to those who rode or sent donations for this event. There are still cheques coming through but it looks as though we will again have raised in excess of £400 towards Erskine Oh ya dancer !Oh ya dancer !ClappersClappers

Well done again to all those involved. Hope to see you all again next year

Kenny I have collected £180 for your Erskine Hospital Kitty.

Do you want me to transfer it directly to the Hospital online and post them the gift aid forms, (they state on them that it is the JWCC Century ride) or transfer the money to the JWCC site using Paypal and send you the gift aid forms?

I have tried to ask you before but my broadband connection has been mucking me around. There is possibly another £100 to come but having pledged the individual is proving difficult to catch!!

Many thanks for a good if very wet day, I will do it again next year.

Best regards,

Dave :lol::lol::lol: :

I have sent off a cheque today to Erskine Hospital for the total of £473.13 which was raised from this year's event.

A second cheque has also been sent for the total of £47.50 which was raised from donations from the Thirty Milers on last weeks run to Dunoon

The above coupled with David Jack's individual sponsorship of £180.00 makes for a fine sum

A fantastic effort from all involved. Thanks again and hope to see you all again for next year's event
