In the good old days of freewheels and clips and straps your 7 speed shimano bar end shifters would happily drag a 7 or 8 speed campag rear mech over a 5 mm spaced (old 7 speed and campag 8) spaced freewheel or cassette. 10 speed campag will happily shift 8 speed shimano mechs over 8 speed shimano cassettes.
