  1. Hi folks

Apologies, but due to a Covid related health setback I won’t able to lead the ride tomorrow. I hope to be ok for the weekend and next week’s ride, but could you organise amongst yourselves tomorrow?
Davie, you know the route, I think. Could I ask you to do the honours, please?

    all the best

  2. Hi folks

The Main Bunch Sunday ride this week will be a trip over the water to the Cowal Peninsula. Details are below for anyone who would normally ride with the intermediate group and would like to join us.
It is an early start because we will have to get the ferry across to Hunter’s Quay.

1.Start at 8.30 clubrooms for ride to Gourock Ferry to Hunter’s Quay. Plan is to catch the 10 o’clock ferry. An option is to drive down to the ferry and  meet us there.

    2. A 48 mile ride around the Cowal, riding up the side of Loch Eck to Strachur; then to Glendaruel; then over to Loch Tarsan and back to Dunoon (48 miles in total)

    3. Lunch stop at Strachur or Sheila’s Diner.

    4. Ferry back and home. Full ride 84 miles.

I hope some of you can join us.

  4. Hi folks

Every Thursday (starting this week 3rd June) will see the return of our very popular ‘sewing bee’ ride. This is a brisk ride towards Stewarton, returning via Neilston. This is a ‘training ride’ but a bit more sedate than the Thursday Renfrew Bunch.

The emphasis will be on travelling efficiently and safely in a bunch. This run is aimed at established club riders and fit new members who would like a good bike workout with like minded folk.  Rider safety will be paramount, and no one will be left behind.

The depart is 6.30 from the club rooms (6.35 at Morrison’s on the cycle track)

I would very much appreciate if we could have a show of hands for this, so I have some idea in advance of numbers.

    All the best

    Darryl

  5. Hi folks
As part of our efforts to get the Johnstone Wheelers’  mid- week cycling calendar up and running, we have added two new events that will be running most weeks (subject to weather and rider availability/demand).

    1. Each Wednesday (starting this week 2nd June) there will be a social ride starting at 6.30 from the club rooms (see the Bunch or WhatsApp groups for details).
    2. Each Thursday (starting this week 3rd June) will see the return of our very popular ‘sewing bee’ ride. This is a brisk ride towards Stewarton, returning via Neilston. This is a ‘training ride’ but a bit more sedate than the Thursday Renfrew Bunch (see the thread on the Bunch, or WhatsApp for further details).
This means that, in addition to our Sunday runs, club members can now take part in JWCC activities midweek on Tuesdays (see our confined events starting this week with the hilly TT at Langbank) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

    All the best, Darryl

  6. Hi folks

Now that we were getting used to  riding in groups again, we have decided to resurrect the Wednesday evening social rides.

These rides will take place most weeks, weather permitting, and are aimed at all members, whether they have just joined the club and want to meet people and practice riding with a group, or established members who just fancy a nice easy social ride.

The rides will start and finish at the club rooms at Miller Street. Wheels rolling at 6.30

    Distance: approx 30 miles.

Pace: social/as dictated by ride leader,  to accommodate all participants.

The route is: down the track to Glengarnock; over the national cycle route to Barmill; Gateside; Howood; club rooms

Hope to see some of you on Wednesday

    Cheers

  7. An alternative ride was agreed on the WhatsApp group. A small bunch of 7 left Johnstone for a nice social ride to Largs. Thanks for the company @⁨EricL⁊ @⁨Stuart Jwcc⁊ @⁨Alan Thomson⁊ @⁨Colin McPhee⁊ @⁨Iain⁊ and Robbie G. First group ride after over 3 weeks off for me! Will be aiming to get the Sunday rides up and running again.

Do remember to check WhatsApp before a ride in case there are any changes to plans, such as today.

Just watching yesterdays stage in the Giro with the gravel roads got me thinking - did any of you race the Davie Bell RR back in the day?

Seems to have been years ahead of time (while simultaneously also being a throwback to an earlier era!) with the section along Carrick Forrest Drive and was a long standing and prestigious race in the Scottish calendar - however doesn't seem to have run for now for years.

I did it once with Mark Whithead. Absolutely brutal race. Scary descents  too.

I know SRAM cassettes fit onto Shimano freehubs, but i noticed on my Rival cassette that although the grooves on the sprockets line up with the splines om the cassette, they are not exactly the same, these onea have sort of a curved profile. Does anyone know if all SRAM cassettes are like this? It means that although they line up there is a bit of play in the fit..

I use both Shimano and SRAM interchangeably without any issues. If there is play, then check bearings in cassette carrier. If they are ok, check that all cassette spacers are present (!) clean, and fitted correctly.

That’s about all I can think of at the moment. Let us know how you get on.

  10. Hi folks
JWCC club rides are back on! Starting this Sunday. Each ride will have a leader who deals with the track and trace information, and we may face to split into 2 groups if we get very large numbers. Social distancing still in place of course.

9am at Miller Street for a ride around the coast. Bail out options at Greenock, Gourock and Largs.

Hope to see some of you then.
    Cheers
    Darryl
