Apologies The rain sounds so crap Al and I are going for 8-10 in the road rain; Milngavie - Crow Road: leaving my house 113 Clober 8 am (Kenny?) and back to ride the Knockie Buckle with the MTB crowd Anyone interested in MTB tomorrow? St Andrews hall car park in the heart of Milngavie @ 10 am for off road fun for 4-6 hours- probably 4 as nobody seems to turn up there when the weather is poor! ss

  8. Katrina, Chung, Fixy Frank, Jim, Al, Me and Al's Two up partner headed off to Kilbarchan, Quarriers and some to Lochwinnoch. Yes, it was windy- but not that bad, Yes it was wet but not for long each time... Won't make CycloX as ballet show part two is calling.... ss

  12. To start with it was only windy. Daryl, Mike, Jim and Franky fixed were joined on the cycle path by me and Al who were late as usual. Out to Bishopton and we were joined by Campbell and Ronnie and the weather got worse and worse. Somewhere above Finlaystone we went up a horrible hill and continued to the cafe at Lochwinnoch via another hill or two the bunch by now depleted to 5. The experience of wind and wet was so bad we opted for the Moss Road. Funny how you forget what winter is actually like.... next week mudguards, tights, overshoes 2 pairs of gloves!

Option A How about Bishopton back road to Woodhall, Largs by Brisbane Glen and back by the Hailey Brae Cycle path to Lochwinnoch and back in by John's Hill or path Distance to Largs from Bishopton is about 25 miles and its 22 or 23 back to Johnstone from there. Could have a cafe stop in Largs if required on the main street. I will have the winter bike on the road by then and you'll be pleased to know I've patched my shorts. We could do a pick up at the Erskine Bridge if Erskine 8.50 Clubrooms 9.30 Bishopton ; cross roads at the garage 10.10 ish. Largs cafe 12 noon home by 2 Option B: Darkest Ayrshire Option C: go out with the 9 am bunch Option D: someone else come up with a plan...

Can I get these to work together? Get the answer below Answer I don't believe so. Campagnolo 8-speed hubs accept only 8-speed cassettes. In some cases it is possible to replace the hub's splined body, but the parts are very hard to find, if they even exist at all. It may be possible to convert your shifters to 8-speed if you can find a compatible shift disk. In Shimano stuff, you can sometimes work around this sort of issue by using an alternate cable routing at the derailer. I haven't tried this with Campagnolo, but it might be worth a shot. See: http://sheldonbrown.com/alternate There's also a possibility that you could get this to work as an 8-speed setup if you were to use a Shimano derailer. If you have one lying arount, it might be worth trying. All the best, Sheldon But Ramsay you really do have to ask why 10?

Well you could but on the other hand you could a) go down to your local bike shop and ask them to save a few old 7 or 8 speed rear cassttes for you which people have replaced: the HG70 and 50 ones haave 2 mm allen bolts on the back tho' some are rivetted. Remove / file off- the cassette will split and you have a free spacing kit.... 9 speed may also be like this but I never wore out the cassette I had to find out. get an old cassette, choose the sprocket you need.... angle grind the teeth off all the other sprockets- c) I've only done this method on my 'pub' bike...used for 12 miles only before I stopped going out altogether! Remove the rear derailleur....get an old cassette, fit it and wrap the chain round the one sprocket..... you are after in the middle of the block. The 16, 17, 18 and 19 usually go well with a 46, 48 or 52 to give you around 70-80 gear inches. High sixties to 70 is ok 80 is for tough guys. Last I did it on 46x18 that meant 5 revs per mph so 90 rpm was a nice 18. This is a good solution as until you work out if you can cope with the one gear as you have to spend no cash. If single speed is not hard core enough try tie-wrapping your spokes to the cassette- never tried this but it should work for a few miles until you see if it works Always carry a chain tool The Clune and the Crow are two places you'll wish you had proper gears especially going down. ps Don't even consider any of that bollocks about no need for a back brake etc pps. Toe clips and straps are a nightmare and so are race pedals, It's winter, your not racing so get some double sided mtb pedals- the basic Time atac for about £30 max are reasonable I

  19. From the BBC: Taxi ran down cyclist on purpose: no doubt two versions of events here... "honest Guv, I was just gentling slapping the taxi and err...pointing to my eye" still... A Glasgow taxi driver who deliberately ran down a cyclist he thought had made an obscene gesture at him has been convicted of assault. Glasgow Sheriff Court heard Alistair Palmer mounted the pavement and swerved into Michael Martin twice on Auchinloch Road in Lenzie on 20 April this year. He then drove off but was traced after another driver noted his registration. Mr Martin said he had slapped the back of the taxi because it was too close. He was treated for cuts and bruises. Palmer, aged 53, of Truro Avenue, Moodiesburn, was also found guilty of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report it to police. 'Too close' Mr Martin, a competing racing cyclist, told the court he was out for a Sunday morning cycle when Palmer tried to overtake him at a mini roundabout. He said: "Just as we approached the roundabout the taxi cut in front of me and because of the traffic island it had to come in closer to me than was comfortable. I saw the taxi swerve the first time and I thought "did that just happen?" then I saw him do it again Kenneth Taylor Eyewitness "It was my natural instinct to put my hand out to the back wheel arch of the taxi and there was a slap as my hand made contact with the taxi. "The driver turned round and I kind of pointed at my eye as if to say watch where you're going." Mr Martin, 39, drove through the roundabout and noticed the taxi was approaching him. He said: "I was aware that the vehicle was very close and there was contact between my hip and thigh and the front of the taxi. Mr Martin said the impact made him swerve into the kerb. He said: "At that point I became aware that the taxi was also on the pavement and again made contact with me. "I put my hand to the front of the taxi to try and stop it and that then knocked me off my bike and flicked me round the front of the car into the centre of the road." Another driver Kenneth Taylor, 55, said he could not believe what he was seeing. Mr Taylor said: "I saw the taxi swerve the first time and I thought "did that just happen?" then I saw him do it again." "The taxi driver was smiling, laughing away to himself." Palmer told the court that he thought Mr Martin had "given me the finger" and chased after him because he had hit his taxi. He said: "I put the window down to shout at him to stop but he just kept on going. He went to take another swipe at the taxi and I braked and he hit the air and tumbled off his bike." Sheriff Andrew Mackie rejected his version of events and convicted Palmer of all three charges. Sentencing was deferred until next month.
  20. If you are in West / North Glasgow my friend Al and I (try to) leave from Milngavie at 8 a.m. on a Sunday to get to the Clubrooms for 9. It's 18 miles over the Erskine Bridge and along the Georgetown. We won't be going this weekend as it is the September Weekend Holiday but will probably be going the following Sunday.   21. Is anyone up for a hostel weekend? This is Option A Go away early Saturday Morning stay over arrive back mid afternoon sunday We've been to lochranza, Brodick and Wanlockhead of late but may try somewhere else. A hostel is about £12 a night It will probably be weekend of the 25th / 26th October or November 8th / 9th. When staying in a hostel we cook for ourselves as one big group cost is about 10-12 pounds for dinner and breakfast and if we eat out a bit more. Option B A hostel a bit further away; drive up Friday night, ride all day Saturday, drive home Sunday. Possible venues; Private hostel on Loch Tay, Pitlochry, somewhere near Moffat Please post up if you are interested , which dates and which option OR suggest your own alternatives... ss

  23. I've been going out with Glasgow Mountain Bike Club on a Wednesday night for a few weeks now. It usually entails 2 to 2 a bit hours round the smaller trails of Mugdock and sometimes up to Carbeth. It's been dark by the end each time and is now more or less dark setting out so you need lights. So far the terrain has been muddy, riverlike and/ or riding over wet tree roots much of the time so it is quite technical but you can always get off and walk. They do tend to wait at junctions and hilltops... so you don't get abandonded. There's sometimes a cup of tea in the club hall when you get back. There's always a club jet-wash session at the hall Most folk are riding hardtails with 4" front travel and a few full sus- however I've not even got front suspension or disc brakes.... Best bit is the trails which I'm really looking forward to seeing first time in the light some day if i ever get time Its worth a go. Bunch size varies from 9 or less to 20 or more Pace is variable but not as demanding as the technical aspects I used to do the forest trails around Aberfoyle a lot... go from Drymen Square on the road by the school, up and over the hill then first left when you see a car park on your right. This follows 'The Pipe Track' which runs all the way to loch Katrine after a bit of Navigating you'll find the back of Aberfoyle and then a few hundred yards up the Dukes Pass theres an in to the Forest Park. You can get good scale maps of it. More forest trail than tehnical last time I was there (last century) Lots of opportunity to combine road and trails .
