Administrators Jannza Posted June 27, 2010 Administrators Report Share Posted June 27, 2010 My current bike setup is Shimano Tiagra 9 speed. 30 / 39 / 50 with a 12-25 cassette. Would it make much difference changing to an 11-25 as when I build up speed on the flat I run out of gears? Is it possible to change this without spending a fortune I do need to keep the 30 x 25 or higher to be able to get myself up the clune! The bike needs serviced and one of the cables replaced so if its not to complicated/expensive I'll get it done at the same time. Thanks
KennyS
Jann, I may have a 40 or 42 tooth middle ring lying around. You're welcome to it FOC if I can find it. You may find it a bit heavier going though if you are using the middle ring most of the time. A 10 min job to change over I'll have a look and see if I can dig it out Kenny
Administrators Jannza Posted June 28, 2010 Author Administrators Report Share Posted June 28, 2010 Hi Kenny That would be good to try. I've seen a 30 / 42 / 52 at a good price but has 5mm longer cranks than my current setup.
2023 Subscriptions ginty001 Posted June 28, 2010 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted June 28, 2010 Jan, SRAM do a 9 speed cassette with 11-26, which would give you an extra tooth at each end. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=17902 Ian..... Hertz Van Rental
30 x 25? I've climbed the Clune on a 53 x 16!

Hertz Van Rental
Twas a few years ago and not a pleasant site - especially the first bit. This then turned into a bit of a challenge to see who could do the whole climb in the biggest gear. I suspect Donald Scally may have managed it in a 15? Hertz Van Rental
Nothing to fix Kenny - I should have said that I meant a 53 x 15T cog - not 15 years old.
Administrators Jannza Posted June 30, 2010 Author Administrators Report Share Posted June 30, 2010 Let's bring this back then, I'm available to supervise!
Hertz Van Rental
Actually wouldn't be a bad event; a) Fixed wheel / single freewheels only Winner is the one who covers the hill in the biggest measured gear c) no stopping allowed (apart from traffic at roundabout) d) placings decided by gearing sizes. Those who DNF still get a placing depending on how much they managed (just like long jump, throwing events etc) e) where two riders tie - heavier bike wins
