KennyG
Hello all I already have the garmin 500 but I'm thinking of getting the 800 or the 810. Does anyone use either of them? Worth the upgrade? Can you change a preplanned route when out or if you take a wrong turn will it automatically put you back on track? Hoping I can sell the 500 easy enough... thanks Kenny

Tony
What's the reason for the upgrade, as a matter of interest? Your post suggests it's because you want to use a GPS for navigation (following pre-planned routes) but as far as I am aware you can do this on the Edge 500 - even though it does not have on-board maps - by copying a GPX file into the "Newfiles" folder. It's then converted into a "course" which you can follow, as a breadcrumb trail on the screen. I use my Edge 200 for this purpose quite often - I think the 500 works the same way. Apologies if you already knew this I just thought I'd mention it in case it might save you some money. I'm a bit sceptical about the value of having on-board mapping on a GPS - given that you can get maps on your phone nowadays anyway. If you're following a route on the GPS and wander off course and really don't know where you are, you can always get your phone out (?) KennyG
Hi Tony I've been venturing out more along unknown roads and thought the garmin 800 might be good if I get lost. I set the breadcrumb route up via the garmin site the other day and I did follow it ok, I've never tried the GPX file way either. I'll plan Sundays route to Gourock in and see how I get on, my mums looking for something to buy for my upcoming 40th!

2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted April 24, 2014 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 24, 2014 I have an 800 and if you are following a route and take a wrong turn it will put you back on track. I dont really use the mapping feature that much but its handy when riding in an area i dont know particularly if mountain biking because with the OS maps you can see contour lines, footpaths, streams etc. KennyG
