did you ever get to run those lights you bought off ebay?....i was intersted to hear what you thought. I have a pair that i bought last year same as those.

Hi H

Yes, lights arrived. Bright enough for the cycle track but not convinced about using them off road. May be alright if I was following someone. Wondering if it is worth putting lithium batteries into them, but am still running on the original batteries. Ok for the money.

Did you see the post from Iain Couttie? MTB is out of action till I do something about my rear bearing.

Hi James, yea i saw Ian's post, i am totally jealous i wasnt out on that run, sounded brilliant, shame about your wheel though. I was working and I am working every day up til Dec 22. So no chance of going out at all with anyone. :(

Aye, those lights are okay to let others aware of your presence, they have a nice flashing mode, but are no good for illuminating your path ahead offroad. Lithum batteries wont make them brighter as they are the same voltage as standard batteries but they will make them last longer. These are standard lowtech leds. To make a difference you need 3 or 5 or 7 watt CREE leds, single chip high efficiency emitters, just search on ebay for cree led. They are way brighter than standard leds and you can make them brighter by buying special batteries that operate at higher voltage. Also its best to go for one that is zoomable or focusable, i.e. you can turn the head of the torch to give you high intensity spot for long distance or a wide flood light for off road. Most of these torches come with bike mounts or you can buy them seperatly, i have an LED LENSERr 300 lumen professional torch and although 300 lumen doesnt sound much the light has a 3 mile range (yes, 3 miles!) on spot light, the light on flood is also brutal...

sorry i am abit of a torch geek, have quite a collection...

i personally wouldnt go for anything like Lupine etc as they are way over priced for what they are because they are specialised for cycling...i like to experiment...

cheers

Harry

Just thought i would fill you in on an interesting bike ride.i was invited over to mugdock park for a night mountian bike ride with one of the lads i did the 24hr cycle with.If you want to feel old go mtn biking with a bunch of pubecent 20 yr olds.it started of well, the tracks are good and my lights are bright. We cycle for a couple of miles and then stop for a short breather. Now most of the conversation that we have at the wheelers coffee stops consists of gear ratios and what interval training will get middle age man able to survive a sportive or race. These lads have a different take on things, this being a family site sufice to say it involved night clubs,Scarlet Johansson alchahol and wishfull thinking. Now there are some conversations that 50 year olds just are not able to contribute.

Then we headed of into the woods again the tracks got that hard to follow i kept cycling into the trees and getting a facefull of firr tree. Then to the off camber runs, when we practiced these at linwood getting it wrong did not involve falling down a banking into the river. Then we had the technical decents, or muddy cliff face, this is where i took of over the handle bars and received lots of constructive advice!! It got that muddy that the lad in front fell off and couldnt climb back up on his hands and knees to get his bike, i had to drop it down to him.we then had some good foot paths to blast allong back to the car park.

I have ben invited over again, probably just for amusement value. So i will extend the offer to other club members to join me so that we can show what wheelers can realy do!!
