2023 Subscriptions Ramsay Posted August 5, 2010 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted August 5, 2010 Can anyone tell me if I need to cover the spoke holes on my rim before fitting a tubular tyre? The wee diagram on the tyre instructions and the cement/glue instructions don't show it, but I don't want to damage either my tyres or rims. Any advice would be appreciated. Life Members chung Posted August 5, 2010 Life Members Report Share Posted August 5, 2010 Hi Ramsay, I take it you are fitting tubs onto your tubular wheels? As far as I know, you don't need to cover the holes on the rim if they are Tubular wheels. You only need rim tape if it's for clincher wheel's inner tubes. The underside (apply glue part) of the Tubulars are of fiber material which will not puncture when contact with the rim holes. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong! 2023 Subscriptions Ramsay Posted August 6, 2010 Author 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted August 6, 2010 Chung, Thanks. That's what I thought. I wasn't concerned about "contact" punctures on the spoke holes, more just the very high pressure bursting/bulging the tyre on the holes. The interwebthingy searchs don't say cover them (or indeed mention them at all!), but I just wanted to be sure! Cheers, R
Hertz Van Rental
Your tubular already has a robust rim tape glued to the base of it, so no need. Use tub tape - just as strong as glue if applied correctly and a thousand times neater / cleaner.

2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted August 7, 2010 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted August 7, 2010 I recommentd Tufo extreme tape. Used Velox and that's OK, but the Tufo is stronger - no roll offs or movement of any kind. Also recommend Tufo tubs - raced 4 seasons and no punctures on the same tyres! 2023 Subscriptions Ramsay Posted August 8, 2010 Author 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted August 8, 2010 Cheers guys. I have actually got Coninental Tubs and glue/cement already. I had heard bad reports about tape, so went for the old fashioned cement. Cheers, R
