Hi Marc, If you want to blame someone, blame me - not the club! As I said in Galeb’s post, I had a set time agreed with Alan at the top. I’ll admit that I’m no expert in the art of time-keeper. I have done it a few times before without too much fuss, but not the Hill Climb. So for me to suddenly deviate from what we plan/set out to do might just cause me confusion & jeopardise the times that follows. Which is the last thing I want & certainly not good for everyone! Robbie made it with about 30 seconds before his start time! We had planned a 3 minutes gap from the last senior to the first Jet, mainly to allow Alan to get in position that was lower down the course. We had over 20 Jets waiting to be set off, some waiting in the pouring cold rain, some with only skin suits on. It wouldn’t be fair on them to wait longer, not to mention the parents as well. Furthermore, using an iPhone stopwatch App wasn’t exactly the most reassuring thing in my mind :-/ Hence, based on all the above issues, I took the decision that I took, which obviously you’re not happy about! But what can I say? I hope you understand my predicament at the time & this should not deter you from participating in future events! Cheers Chung

Unlucky, Galeb! As there were still a big bunch of Jets to set off after the senior riders & with Alan McLean (my time-keeping partner at the top) who had to make this scheduled way back down to the closer finish line for the jets. It was just too close to make any sudden changes & could potentially causes confusion, hence to take the decision on the line! You & Marc could have been strong contenders & give Robbie a run for his money :-/ Oh well, there's always next year & it gives you 12 months to train for it! :-) I'm sure you'll smash it! Cheers

I told him its fine for him to ride too, but just won't be counted in the competition. Is that OK, if it's not then he said that's fine too! Also, would it be OK to post a shortish ride after the event? Maybe just over to Stewart for a cafe stop or something less strenuous. Cheers

Darryl, I think I’m just unlucky with my pair of Neutron Ultra, only 2 summer use & already the front non-drive side bearing, cup & cone was in a right state. Not to mention had to replace the free hub ratchet spring last year as well :-0 If you ever need to replace the cups on your Zondas, let me know & you’re welcome to use the tools if you want a bash :-)

Davie, you're absolutely right about Campag specific tools ......... but what can I say, I'm a sucker for it :-) I was absolutely bricking it when I had to hammer the cups out of the carbon hub, that's with the proper tool too. Geez your wheel/bearings & I'll press it in for you or if you can wait, I can bring the tools with me at the soon to be AGM & we can mess about with it then? Hi All, Some of you might know that I’m a bit “keen” when it comes to working on my bike(s), some might even say it’s an illness :-) Acquiring bike specific tools is also a sick obsession of mine. Recently my Campag Neutron wheels needed a bit of TLC as it was feeling rough when spinning, the hub bearings definitely need servicing, so I thought why not do it myself & in the process got a bit “carried away” in buying some fancy tools to do jobs properly - punch, bearing extractor, hub bearing press tools etc. Needless to say, it made the job(s) of servicing/replacing my Campag cup/cone bearings hubs a lot, lot easier, it would also work well on seal bearings hub too, it’s almost a pleasure to do it now rather than being a PITA job. Now I have these tools which will hopefully last me a life time & it would be a shame not to get it use more often :-) Therefore, if any club members of the Joanins have wheels that needs work on the hub bearing, then give me a buzz & we can see what I can do. Obviously this is just my desperate attempt to get the chance to mess about with my new tools, NO charges involve, you just pay for any parts needed & we can do the job together if you fancy giving it a go. I’m telling you, taking a hammer to your lovely carbon wheels hub certainly does raise your heart rate to a new level :-) I think it’s an experience every cyclist should have! Also, some of the tools I have are Campagnolo wheels specific with the cup/cone, ball bearing types, so for those of youse with higher end Campag wheels i.e Zonda, Eurus, Shamal, Bora etc & Fulcrum equivalent. Then I have these tools especially if you want to extract any damage cups that need replacing that are pressed solidly into the hubs. The need to ride our winter bike is upon us & it would make sense/good practice to examining your summer wheels to see if it needs some TLC before storage or winter ones so to face the harsh road conditions of winter. Like Charlie said, good run in dry-ish weather but the wind was constant all day .............. 7 souls - Alex, Charlie, David C, Iain Coutie, Stuart T, Tom & myself set off toward Troon for a lovely cafe stop at the cafe Blueberry. Got served fairly quickly as the place was quiet since we were quite early as Sunday goes! Returned via Irvine, Kilwinning etc, back on the track at Glengarnock where we bumped into the 30 milers bunch who also set off at 9 from the clubroom. David & I jumped ship & joined them since the Cowen's had a puncture each, so lend a hand in fixing them. Got going again afterwards & then the rain started, thankfully it was only a brief spell. I got home sunny & dry with 135km on my Garmin, happy days! :-) Thanks for posting Charlie & to all for the company yesterday. P.S If the weather is half decent next Sunday, can we possibly head over the Clyde for a change .......... please! :-) Cheers Chung

I second Darryl suggestion of the B&W Bikes box, in terms of cost & what looks to me like pretty robust construction (I think Iain McGinty can confirm that). I have experience of the Bike Box Alan, they are great but cost a lot of money especially if we have to buy a number of them Looking at the dimension of the B&W & a "larger" version of the same brand, we could possibly get 4 of the larger ones & 2-3 of the smaller (depending of course on our budget). Hi Iain, Iain made some good suggestion via Merlin if you're not looking to spend a fortune on tubs. Is it for a front or back wheel? I have experience only mostly with Vittoria tubs, so that's what I'll recommend & all from Merlin cycles as these are the older versions hence cheaper than the newer G+ series.. Despite the forecast, there was still 5 who met & started at the clubroom this morning - Davie B, David C, Glen, Martin & myself :-) A rough idea of where we were heading was agreed & we set off in search of quiet back roads lead by Martin - via Bowfield, Lugton (where Davie departed as he was taken it easy after yesterday's Cross race over in Rothsay), Uplawmoor, Stewarton for a café stop, then over to Kilwinning, back on the cycle track at Glengarnock for a ride back to Johnstone! Strong head wind in most places, lots of debris on the "farm roads" hence the 5 punctures between the 4 of us, everyone had their mis-fortune, that includes me as well But that didn't dampen our spirit as even the sun made several brief appearance through-out the day! A good day on the bike despite the many punctures, some new roads for me & 122km by the time I got home ........ I'm knackered!
