Nice to see so many people out this morning. Sorry for the abrupt exit - as we headed towards the A736 I could hear the pavé calling me...here is what the "splinter group" did: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/217845514 Thanks Tony

+1 for the MagicShine lights as recommended by Al. Regardless of whether he will be riding on lit/unlit roads I would also recommend a hi-vis vest of the type road-workers and guys on building sites tend to wear. Bike shops sell them but you can also get them in B&Q for a lot less, and you can customise them by stitching on extra bits of Scotchlite tape. This can become an absorbing hobby in itself

Sun 9th Sep - Moffat century
Tony replied to Tony's topic in Sportives / Audax / Tours / Long-distance
No worries Chung. I knew this would clash with PFS when I posted it, but September is quite a busy month, with the Rothesay weekend on the 15th/16th and the "Big Club Run" on the 23rd. Next year I will get my finger out and schedule this for earlier in the year. Enjoy Pedal for Scotland... -

Should be fine Alan, it will be good to see you again -
Hi Folks I've got an all-day pass for Sun 9th Sep and I'm going to do a wee excursion in the Borders. Here is the plan should anyone wish to join me: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1612711 ...it's 100 miles, starting and finishing at Moffat. (In words: Lockerbie via the "old" A74, Langholm, Eskdalemuir, Yarrow, Meggethead/Talla, Devils Beeftub, Moffat.) It is a route best described as "rolling", no mental hills (we're approaching Meggethead from the East rather than the "challenging" Western approach). Cafe stop in Eskdalemuir @ 48 miles. I suggest we meet in Moffat outside the Town Hall (which is roughly opposite the Balmoral Hotel) at 0815 for an 0830 start. Usual club run rules apply. Average speed likely to be around 14mph (based on Garmin stats from the Ayr-Newton Stewart ride back in June). Below I've pasted in a couple of photos I took last time I rode on some of these roads. If you are interested please respond on this thread. NB this is obviously weather-dependent - I'll make a go/no-go decision on Sat 8th Sep no later than midday and update this thread at that time. Thanks Tony

I definitely won't be out next Sunday (12th Aug) due to a family "do"...

Garmin data for the six café-dodgers: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/206872802 Hope the others enjoyed their tea-stop, and the ferry-ride

Hi Boyd I've made a suggestion on the 30-miler thread. Hope to see you tomorrow at 0900. Thanks Tony

Hi Graham I'm not keen on going North of the river for various reasons, but will tag along with you as far as the Erskine Bridge then head for the Inverclyde hills. So I'll be doing a variant on this: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939426 ...possibly with some extra miles added on. No cafe stop. Anyone else who is short of time feel free to join me if you want. Thanks Tony

Now sold (on Gumtree - home of the "mounting bike")

Now on Gumtree

Think I'll pass on this Paul. A compact chainset suits me better. Thanks Tony
-
Hi Paul I take it this is a 39-53? Or is it a compact? Thanks

Hi Folks selling this baby seat: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46407751@N ... 0717555628 ..it comes with a Blackburn EX1 pannier rack which you can see in the photos. The seat is designed to mate with the rack, it slides on and locks in position. It's in very good nick. These seem to go for about £90 now (including rack) so let's say £45 to a JWCC member Thanks Tony

Nice run to Stewarton this morning with Greig's blue-and-yellow train...a well-marshalled bunch indeed After the split Matt, Boyd, Andy and I teamed up with the Paisley Velo guys. Later on we saw some people from Athelite Tri Club stripping off to go for a swim in Black Loch. Rather them than me - Iain thought it looked like "a place you would dump bodies in"
-
Hey Boyd I will be out - planning to leave with the 30-milers but split off at Stewarton (see Greig's post) Thanks Tony
-
Comrades I will join you but will split off from the group at Stewarton to explore some rustic byways and maybe do a few extra hills. If anyone else wants to join me I'd be glad of the company...aiming to be back in Johnstone by 1300 having done about 50 miles (not stopping at a cafe) Thanks Tony
-
Nice to catch up today, Greig. Glad to be of help For info, what we were doing on our lap of the Glengarnock circuit wasn't really "through-and-off", it was the "Continental Change" as described in paragraph 3 of this article: http://www.edinburghrc.co.uk/news/281/9 ... Chain-Gang ...paragraphs 1 & 2 describe "through and off". Or you could refer to the "Continental Change" as "Double Spells" since that is what it amounts to - you take a double spell when at the front. These pictures may help (the link will only work if you have Powerpoint installed): http://www.andamento.co.uk/tony/Bunch_R ... nental.mht

Would really like to join you Iain but will be on holiday in Norfolk from tomorrow until the following Friday. Thanks Tony

Hi Folks recently I decided to support my local CTC member group by organising some rides in the Renfrewshire/Inverclyde area. There is one this Saturday if anyone wants to come along. Details below (note the unusual start/finish point). Start time: 0930 Start/finish: Johnstone Station http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939408 This route is 44 miles in total. No cafe stop. Back in Johnstone by 1300 or so. Average speed roughly 13-14mph. You don't need to be a CTC member to come along - I think the rule is you're allowed to come along 5 times before you have to join. (This rule is related to the guidelines concerning liability insurance for club runs). Thanks Tony

No rain and quite a bit of sun, the Met Office were spot-on Roll call: me Iain Cowden Mary Bill Thomson Paul Cooper Chung Boyd Johnstone Al Yuille Alan Fox Alan Broadfoot (Ayr Roads - Jets dad) Chris Johnson (GMBC - Al's pal) Campbell Hutcheson ...a bigger turnout than I expected given the absence of Dennis and his Lanarkshire squadra. Garmin stats: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/192419816 High tea is the new rock'n'roll

Latest Met Office forecast for Newton Stewart for Sunday 24th June: ...the Ayr forecast is more or less identical. See you tomorrow morning at Alloway at 0900. One thing I want to emphasise - for people who are new to this - don't park in the space behind Burns Cottage. Although it is free it closes at 1700 or 1730 and we might not be back by then. Best to stick to the free public parking spaces along the side of the road as described in my initial post. If you're going to be late you can call me on 07896-153853. Thanks Tony
-
Forecast still looking OK at this stage but it could go either way in the next 24 hours. I'll put another update on here tomorrow night, again no later than 2100. Thanks Tony
-
Forecast for Ayr/Newton Stewart for Sunday currently showing as "showers / sunny spells" - same as last year and the year before iirc I will check again tomorrow (Friday). If the forecast has suddenly got much worse I'll cancel/reschedule and will post a message on here no later than 9pm on Friday stating that. Re the Albert guys: anyone got a contact number for Dennis? Failing that I will try to sign up to their website & put a message on their forum. Anyone got space in their car for Boyd? I'm getting a lift from BillT, not sure if he has space for 3 bikes in the back.

Garmin stats: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/189831876 It seems I burned 2788 calories which is 35.3 chocolate hobnobs. Well done me!
