james-maclaren
Hi, Thought you might be interested in what Science in Sport have to say about the humble Mars Bar. "One 58g bar contains 34.6g of sugars. If you look at the ingredients this sugar comes from sugar (presume sucrose), glucose syrup and lactose. Lactose isn't bad for you unless your allergic/intolerant to it. We're designed to metabolise glucose so the glucose syrup, not that bad although you may want to avoid overloading your system with it. The problem here is the sucrose or whats on the label as sugar. It contains 50% glucose and 50% fructose. The real problem is the fructose which although does not stimulate your pancreas to produce insulin directly, it does make your liver produce a chemical that blocks insulin working in your liver to metabolise the glucose which means your pancreas has to produce more insulin to metabolise a small amount of glucose. Basically it makes your liver insulin resistant which is just a tiny step on the way to becoming diabetic. Science in Sport" I hope this means something to somebody!
