"Right"said Burt, the Belgian tour guide,"We have a few kilometres along the coast, then turn left up into the mountains. We will climb gently around 20 km and stop at Santa Lucia for coffee or coke or whatever, then it's a 2km descent followed by by a 6km climb to the high point at 930m, then another 2 km descent then a couple of short climbs of less than 2km each, then descend back to Maspolomas. Easy".
GJ was unruffled, firmly zipped closed, and smelling only slightly of sun cream. That was to change.
Off we set in 23C. And sure enough, climbing gently for 20 km, with the temperature slowly rising, we got to the beautiful village of Santa Lucia. In the best traditions of the 30 milers, AlanT with GJ firmly bringing up the rear behind Burt and Rudy of Team Rudy Project, his Belgian compatriot. A short rest stop for coke (in bottles) and bananas, and then on to the rest of the trip. Some truly stunning scenery along the way, the highlight being the view (and the sense of achievement) from the viewpoint at 930 metres above sea level.
The 2 km descent was fine, and the second of the climbs was nasty, but then we had another stunning view into the mini grand Grand Canyon in one direction and down to the coast in the other.
The descent into Maspalomas was 8km of gorgeous, smooth, switchbacked Tarmac with very light traffic, so we could take fast lines through the bends with relative impunity.
Thanks to Burt at Happy Biking for his patience, and good luck with the racing.
