Committee Alan McLean Posted February 29, 2012 Committee Report Share Posted February 29, 2012 Hi I am looking for a free bike for a guy at work who has no money. He commutes a few miles on a heavy Asda bike which is falling apart and not economically repairable. He cannot afford the cheapest bike to work model. Does anyone have an unused but usable MTb or hybrid they could do without? I can replace rusty cables, chains, pads, tyres etc but need at least a frame, wheels and gears please. Steel/alloy/anything. The rider is about 5'6". Reward in heaven etc. Alan
Life Members chung Posted February 29, 2012 Life Members Report Share Posted February 29, 2012 Hi Alan, I don't have a MTB or Hybrid, but I do have my old retired Trek 1400 alu. frame which is not being use in size 52cm. I'm 5'7", so should fit your work mate if you think its suitable. However, I must stress that there are signs of oxidizing around the bottom bracket & rear dropouts area underneath the paint work of the frame. There's no crack or anything, but its about 8 years old. Therefore, I'm not sure if it's 100% structurally safe, others can verify that for me. I also have a set of old stem & drop bar that you can have too! P.S. If you need photos, I can take some & email it to you so you can be the judge of it. Let me know if it's any use to you. Tony
I would direct him to Gumtree or eBay - normally there are plenty of old fully-rigid MTBs which make ideal commuter bikes (most have mudguard/rack eyelets). For example: http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/gents ... e/96917713 I've used bikes like this myself in the past. They are not to be confused with "BSOs"
Committee Alan McLean Posted March 2, 2012 Author Committee Report Share Posted March 2, 2012 Chung/Tony Thanks very much. I don't think he could ride a drop barred bike and also I think repairs might be a bit more expensive than for a generic MTB. He has no money. Do gumtree have free stuff?
