1. I would direct him to Gumtree or eBay - normally there are plenty of old fully-rigid MTBs which make ideal commuter bikes (most have mudguard/rack eyelets). For example: http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/gents ... e/96917713 I've used bikes like this myself in the past. They are not to be confused with "BSOs"
2. Does anyone know if the BCF have any guidelines concerning liability insurance for members of BCF-affiliated clubs such as JWCC who are organising club runs? I've not been able to find anything about it on the BCF website. I know that you get individual 3rd party liability insurance from BCF membership (as you do with CTC membership) but that's not what I'm after. By contrast the CTC website has a lot of info on the subject - see these links: http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4972 http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4462 ...and they have specific liability insurance for ride leaders (see "Organisers' Liability cover" on the second page above). From a JWCC perspective - what's the score? Thanks Tony
3. I think this might be the missing link: http://www.johnstone-wheelers.co.uk/ind ... Itemid=338

xmass 2010 night out

Billy I would like to come along - room for one more? Thanks Tony
5. If the DS is on 4th March then we'll adjust the above dates accordingly. Club events take priority.
6. I propose we start up the intermediate runs again in March. So here goes: 4th March no run (Don Smith) 11th March Kilbirnie-Ardrossan-Barrmill (Tony Carrigan) http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939408 44 miles 18th March TBC (AN Other) 25th March Benslie-Stewarton-Uplawmoor (Tony Carrigan) http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939317 46 miles A few points: 1. I normally post the runs for each month in advance, in summary form (as per this posting) to allow discussion on the thread about what people want to do. Then each week I post the run for that coming Sunday. 2. Please feel free to post a run. You don't have to post a map link - just as long as you give people some idea of the route and what time you expect to be back in Johnstone (for those who have things to do in the afternoon). It might help if you state your intentions up front on the "summary thread" (i.e. this one). You can go into more detail when you actually post the run. 3. I normally don't do cafe stops but if you're posting a run and you really want to have a cafe stop, go ahead - it's your call. 4. The runs I post are normally 40-50 miles in length because that suits the time available to me - but again, if you are willing to post a run, you can make it a longer one if you want - again it's your call. I'm happy to tag along and bail out early if need be. 5. Last summer we started at 0915 to avoid having all three groups start at 0900 which might confuse newcomers. I propose we stick to that unless anyone really disagrees? 6. This probably doesn't need saying but - we normally go at the pace of the slowest rider. As a reminder here are a few other routes we used last summer: Barrmill-Stewarton-Fenwick-Neilston http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939462 Kilbirnie-Largs-West Kilbride http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939436 Loch Thom-Largs-Kilbirnie http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939444 Tour of Inverclyde http://ridewithgps.com/routes/939426 I create these in Memory Map (or record them using my GPS) and then upload them to the website in GPX format. You can do the same thing in reverse.
7. George the steepest sections are about 25% - there are two of these, one near Tynron and one as you leave Moniaive. (Unless the route has changed in the last 2 years). They are both fairly short but brutal (think "C11" and you will get the idea). Apart from that the most noteworthy climb is the big drag up to Wanlockhead which is long but not that steep, mostly 5-10% I would say and no more than 15% at any point. Thanks Tony
8. Hi Dennis I have put this in my calendar... Thanks Tony
9. It's possible to edit your posts retrospectively (using the small EDIT button in the top right hand corner).
10. January bump Also now appearing on the Paisley Freegle message board: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Paisley-Freegle/ Thanks Tony
11. Hi Steve I would have liked to come along to help and/or participate but am working on the 30th Maybe next year Tony
12. Really sorry Martin, didn't see your post! Brian couldn't make it, and I didn't think anyone else would be interested so I just went out on my own - slightly later. I hope you didn't hang about in the cold waiting for me. Took a few more pics: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjxrC96p
13. Yeah 9am is fine - see you at Miller St at 0900 then? I was lucky enough to have the day off today and had some free time in the afternoon so went down to Parkhill Woods for an hour or so. Couple of photos below... ...fantastic...hopefully the temperature will not dip too far below zero between now and Sunday - you don't want it too crunchy
14. Planning to do a loop of Gleniffer Braes on Sunday morning if anyone's interested. It is a mixture of singletrack and landrover tracks, it's all non-technical and will suit CX bikes as well as MTBs. (I ride a fully-rigid MTB). There are quite a few gates you have to lift your bike over but that will be no bother for cyclocross types I plan to leave the house about 0830, Should be back by 1230. If anyone is interested, post here, I can easily swing by Miller St if you want to meet up there. I usually go up to the Braes via the Brandyburn path which is accessible either from Rannoch Rd or Auchenlodment Rd. Thanks Tony
15. I am very bad at introducing myself so I'm sorry if I didn't catch everyone's name today. Thanks for your company Here is a map of the route we did: http://www.andamento.co.uk/tony/Tracklo ... 20577.html ...a modest 36 miles (but in rain, sleet, hail and snow). I can also supply a GPX file of the route for anyone who is interested in that sort of thing. For info, there is a cafe at Dalgarven Mill which opens at 11am on Sundays all year round. We passed within half a mile of it. This was deliberate, because I thought that some might want to stop for a coffee. Personally I don't really do cafe stops (especially in cold weather) but I'm happy to share information like this, and also happy to see cyclists supporting small businesses etc. Anyway here is the link for anyone who is interested: http://www.dalgarvenmill.org.uk/
16. Hi Folks who is going out tomorrow and do any of the usual suspects have a route in mind? I can post route details if required, but will let the regulars have first shout. Thanks Tony
17. OK - to try and help us get something organised I have renamed the thread in accordance with Darryl's proposed date. I can't make it as mentioned previously, so will bow out at this point.
18. Any takers for Fri Jan 6th, Thai Siam at 7:30pm then? If I get 6 names I will book a table. Any others who want to pile in after that, just update this thread - all welcome. So far we have: Me
19. At least three people (including me) can't make the 9th and it looks like December generally is going to be difficult, what about Friday January 6th at Thai Siam?
20. Any club members interested in going out for a curry and a few beers before Xmas? Post here if interested, also mention dates that suit. Dates I can't do are: Fri 9th Dec - wife out Sat 10th Dec - wife out again (?!?!) Fri 16th Dec - work night out Re venue: maybe somewhere in Paisley would be best for people who would be travelling in by train etc. I don't really know any of the curry-houses in Paisley, any suggestions? Thanks Tony
21. Great run today Iain - thanks for making me get out there and do it
22. Iain I'll join you. Sending you a PM with my mobile number
23. Cancelled due to lack of interest. Over the last 4-6 weeks numbers have decreased quite a lot as people have been migrating to the Main Bunch whilst they are in their winter "base miles" training phase. With the benefit of hindsight it might have been better to wind up the intermediate group at end of October or maybe even end of September. A lesson for next year perhaps. Thanks to all who have come along on the runs, it's been fun
24. A certain well-known bike shop chain sells plastic tyre liners under the "Slime" brand name. I have used them but would not really recommend them as they are very fiddly to fit. I haven't tried the "Slime" tyre sealant which is part of the same product line.
25. Last outing of the year for the touring section This is a new one, comprising bits from a couple of the routes we've done before: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/829293 45 miles (quite lumpy for the first 10, fairly flat thereafter). Braes Neilston Stewarton Kilmaurs Torranyard Barrmill Bowfield I hope we can have a short cafe stop in Kilmaurs (if people are up for it) and aim to be back in Johnstone by 1330. Thanks Tony
