Starting triathlon

Hi

Some people have asked me how to do triathlons.

The good news is that the sport is inherently biased towards the cycling leg which is usually around two thirds of the whole event.

Most Georgetown regulars would be in the top 20% of local triathlon bike times.

If you are a regular cyclist the your cardiopulmonary fitness will be pretty good and, in anything up to 5k, you will be a top 50% runner without much training. It is difficult to run>5k without some training.

Swimming is far more technique dependent than either running or cycling. You could simply train yourself to swim longer distances until you can comfortably swim 16-30 lengths of your local pool non-stop or you could save a lot of time by getting proper coaching.

The best starter distance is a sprint: usually 400-750m swim/10-20k bike/5k run or thereabouts. Pool swim is best because you don't have to worry about open water technique or wetsuits but it is uniquely exciting to swim in wild water with hundreds of others and good swimmers will enjoy it.

There are lots of club cyclists and club runners appearing at events now.

I would be delighted to help any of our members start out.

to be fair, Alan hasn't a clue. He finishes triathlons so quick that he barely gets time to feel out of breath.

At the other end of the field, triathlons are generally friendly affairs.

almost everyone worries about the swim, no need, it is a small part of the race, even if you breast stroke and some do, you won't lose much time. Bike is well a bike, assume most here know how to do that, running is easy for some, er, well, some...
