I've used clipless - road and mtb for a long time. Stuggled with shimano sl for a while, easy enough to clip in but found more kick out required with heel than spd to unclip. I've now changed road bike pedals to look keo easy which are easier to unclip. Also because Dooleys offer a setup service on them Ohyadancer!

You will get used to them

My preference is look as you can get a fair bit of adjustment and three degrees of float red grey and black

I think it's just about training the brain to use them

Can't think of anybody who rides with flat pedals

Nothing wrong with SPD SLs. Will just take some time. Adjust the tension to suit your preference (small alen key hole and indicator to rear). If you already have the yellow cleats then you already have float although some say that if you're properly set up you don't need float.
