  5. Iain asked me to clarify things for aol users.. The SPYWARE detector download Aol provides is good, however it does not check the system registry. So while ads / popups are blocked temporarily they often start running again next time you restart your machine. Thats why you need to run a registry checker like adware (from Lavasoft). Since doing this, I still run the aol SPYWARE checker periodically, and so far no new stuff has infected my machine. 6. For AOL users AOL offers a SPYWARE download that scans your drives for suspicious programs (including irritating programs that trigger ad popups and also premium rate dialler programs like the one Paul might have experienced). Unfortunately even after blocking these programs they remain in the system registry and often restart themselves. Should I be concerned? The answer is "yes". If you have broadband then programs could easily run in the background without you noticing. Some well known programs can record your keystrokes (eg. passwords, online banking details) and transmit these to a hackers mailbox. At the least you will get irritated with popups appearing trying to sell you all kinds of rubbish. Whats the answer? Ad-aware is an excellent free utility (as mentioned above). eg. Downloaded from http://www.absey-vine.co.uk/ad-aware/ Once downloaded, logout of windows, and restart windows in SAFE mode (if I recall this involves pressing F8 during bootup). This is useful to prevent any software running at bootup, including spy software. Then install / run ad-aware or your preferred product (doing a registry/ drive scan). Since the computer has run in safemode, once you clear out all infected files your computer should be fine. If you are unsure about the classification of files labelled as suspicious (eg. they may be legitimate files) then mark them for quarantine rather than deletion. If all is well with your computer you can always delete them later (or after speaking to a techie person). As a side-effect you might notice improved performance for internet browsing. 8. sounds serious if the CID (Chicken Investigation Department) came to your door peter. I know that yellow feathered costume you like to wear matches the club colours, but you really need to get the club kit I would ignore the plods attempts to pin more gossip on Robert Millar. 10. Stevie asked a question in another thread, so I thought I'd inform people about the coaching course Sharon and I are attending. Its for BCF Coaching qualification Level 2. The purpose of this intensive 3 day course is to produce qualified voluntary staff to serve the schoolkids (age 11-16) who will be attending the new Cycling Academy based at Bellahouston Park (near Paisley). After the theory follows a lengthy period of practical work before we can officially say we are qualified coaches! The first day involved a lot of material on child protection. Its a sad reflection of our litigious times that this is such an inportant topic. This topic included discussions on appropriate behaviour around children, handling delicate situations, escalation procedures when fears of abuse exist, appropriate escalation procedure with external agencies, scope of parental consent when working with minors. The rest of the day looked at coaching generally. Good coaching practice, coaching styles. Elements of planning activities. I think this is a worthwhile course, which offers the opportunity of sharing your enthusiasm with the next generation of cyclists. We can all see the lack of younger cyclists in training and races.. so its nice to have the chance to influence people to try and change this for the future. Will keep the forum updated with activities after our next day. 11. Nov issue off "220 Triathlon" discusses the benefits of Creatine. To summarise You must be training 4-6 times a week, eating a diet of quality carb sources, lean protein, low hydrogenated (trans) fats (eg. virgin olive oil, fish oil, linseed oil) Beginners are advised to get their creatine intake from organic red meat and fish --- this also provides quality protein and iron. Caffeine can affect creatine absorption There are no quick fixes to better performance, only work rest and a healthy lifestyle. Personally I use low doses of creatine in a recovery drink after long runs or hard gym sessions. My own opinion is that protein intake is a greater dietary limiting factor for muscle repair and recovery, and for extending time to failure in strength work, than creatine. 12. I think your being hard on yourself Dougie. On the Arran trip I saw at first hand your fitness programme. I think you had at least 10pieces for lunch. Maybe Mark can advise for smaller eaters like the rest of us how we can get through 100 ! Scott PS. What does creatine taste like on a piece anyway? Is that a Johnstone delicacy ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For all your computing needs, new machines, spares & repairs - the Yellow Computer Shop, Love Street, Paisley 0141-561-0323 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  15. It would be great if the SCU calendar for next year came out early so we could make plans for trips like this. This would of course be a very demanding circuit , but made bearable due to the early departure in cooler conditions (715am) and the 2 feeding stations arranged for riders along the way. Means you could be about halfway around (5.5hrs) before the temperature gets too high . Not as ridiculously oversubscribed as the etape either and more challenging to boot Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For all your computing needs, new machines, spares & repairs - the Yellow Computer Shop, Love Street, Paisley 0141-561-0323 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  19. Dear Susi I've heard that for the most effective sports massage its best if the athlete shaves. Should I shave before the session or will you shave me when I arrive? Yours faithfully sd
  20. Count me in for 830 to 900... Now where did I put my best aftershave?
  21. Up to 8 guides taking different ability groups every day (including mountain biking), other trips including bbqs and shopping in San Marino, fantastic all-inclusive buffet food for breakfast, afternoon and dinner, and evening walks for Gelato and weird cocktails! Workshop for essential maintenance, and loads of German tourists to abuse on the mountains.. what more could you ask for. Scott
  22. 2 great results.. congratulations to both our lovely ladies !! Scott
  23. A posting was recently made to the SCU forum asking for volunteers for sports research. As well as getting a free VO2 max test, you get a sports recovery / creatine drink to try, as well as a go of their "environmental chamber". I'm hoping to smuggle a woman in so I can conduct my own experiments !! For those who missed out on the alpe d'huez trip, this offers a free taste of cycling in 30degree heat at high altitude! Chris says he can fit people in up to Xmas --- so you can give it a go after the racing season. Scott ----------------------------- Cyclists wanted! Author Topic ChrisEaston Hi all, I am currently running a study at Glasgow University looking at the effects of a sports drink on cycling performance in the heat and am lookinging for men aged 18-40 (or just over) who cycle regularly to take part in the study. (Some of you that post on this website may have already been involved). All the tests would take place in the lab at the West Medical Building at the University of Glasgow. Each subject would undergo an initial VO2 max test using the latest high tech equipment to test aerobic capacity before performing several trials in the environmental chamber. Each subject would have access to all their own data (VO2max data and performance data) as well as receiving two weeks supply of sports drink! You would also have the option of coming into the lab any time in the future for a free VO2 max test (which would be very expensive to get done privately). Furthermore we have a team of physiologists, sports scientists and nutritionists who would be on hand to offer you any training or diet advice. If you would be interested or would like any further info. either send me an email on [email protected] or give me a phone in the lab on 0141 330 2915. Most of the subjects who have completed the study will agree that you get a lot out of it both in terms of knowledge and training so it would be worth your while getting in contact. Regards, Chris Easton University of Glasgow Centre for Exercise and Science in Sports and Medicine 0141 330 2915
  24. Me too one vindaloo too many !! Is a buffet on the menu fridays?
  25. If most people favour Paisley, I dont mind getting a train in. Whats that curry house like in Paisley, across from O'Neill's pub? Any recommendations? If Glasgow is the choice I can offer some suggestions too. Scott
