    Robert Millar

Scottish Television have announced they have started to put together a piece to remember the achievements of Robert Millar exactly 20 years ago....finishing 4th in the Tour and winning the King of the Mountains. The piece will be shown on Scottish Television next week when the Tour hits the Pyrenees, the famous hunting ground of Robert. I will keep you all posted on exact details nearer the time. The piece will enclude Billy Bilsland (ex-pro) who helped Robert in his earlier days and still has his King of the Mountains jersey proudly displayed on his shop wall.

  16. PEDAL POWER PUTS NEW PAIR IN FRONT Mar 9 2004 CYCLING JOHNSTONE Wheelers got back to winning ways in their first competitive cycling event of the year. New signing Martin Lonie teamed up with Sean Grey to win the arduous 18-mile two-pair time trial in Ayrshire, ahead of more than 60 other riders. The event, which was hosted by Fullarton Wheelers at the Drybridge circuit, was thought to favour the Ayrshire riders. But the Wheelers duo finished a sensational 20 seconds ahead of their second-placed rivals, Paul Rennie and Jim Murdoch, of North Beach Dooleys. A spokesman for Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club said: "This was an excellent result from Grey and Lonie, who will make a formidable partnership throughout the rest of the season." The final results were - First: Sean Grey and Martin Lonie, Johnstone Wheelers, 39mins 15secs. Second: Paul Rennie and Jim Murdoch, North Beach Dooleys, 39mins 35secs. Third Kenny Girvan and Kenny Muir, Ayrodynamic, 39mins 36secs. Lonie and Grey were among three pairs from the Renfrewshire cycling club taking part in the event. Fellow Johnstone riders Harry Lambie and Alison Winship finished well up the list of mixed pairs, completing the course with a time of 46mins 12secs. Paul McDonald and Stevie Blom also made it to the finish in just over 43 minutes. With the addition of Martin Lonie, the Wheelers have secured an elite class rider who plied his trade all over Europe in recent years. And they have also bolstered their squad for the coming season by adding Kelly Van Der Toorn, a world class triathlete. A club spokesman said: "Martin has already made his mark by partnering Sean Grey to an excellent victory in Ayrshire. "And Kelly's presence at the club will bolster a very good ladies team led by Katrina Hair and we have high hopes of the ladies doing really well." The club has also been boosted by support from Dooleys Cycles in Moss Street, Paisley, the Paris Hair Company in Renfrew and Scottish Leader Whisky. A spokesman added: "We would like to thank them all for their sponsorship."

  19. I have recently qualified in health insurance and most other insurances. I am not looking to exploit the club for business but if anyone wants some advice or free quotes then let me know. Unique policies where all premiums will be refunded in full at end of term if there is no claim. Cycling can be a dangerous hobby and i wish someone had advised me years ago when premiums were lower. Here's to a healthy year. Brian 07967505133

    Coaching

In any other career people pay for experience. Coaching is a career for many and pays the bills. I have chosen not to contract any riders at this moment in time but things may change in the future. There are many benefits from personal coaching and i would encourage this. On Friday my goal is to get to know the attendees and set a plan for future topics. I will try to cover every general topic throughout the winter months. I can only advise that all questions be relevant to the topic on the night. My guess is that the people attending will be across a wide range of capabilities so i will be starting with the basics and building up everyones knowledge. If you have some knowledge then i can advise that you can always learn new tricks. When you stop learning you stop performing as well. Can i ask everyone to bring their bikes on Friday. Basics start with bike positions with this having a great effect on power efficiency. If you have read Graeme O'Bree book then you will understand how important this is. See you all on Friday Remember your pads and pens.

    Coaching

I have been asked by Kenny to do a few coaching nights at the clubrooms. 1st one is this Friday. I would like to get a bit of feedback on who will be attending and what level you are currently at. Numbers are required in order for me to prepare. I would also like to know what topics individuals would like to cover - from bike positions to planning meso cycles. All comments welcome.
