University of Strathclyde Testing

Hi

I am a fourth year sports science student at Strathclyde University embarking on my dissertation, below is an outline of the project and I would be very grateful if any one would be able to volunteer and if you could pass it on to other club members or friends.

We are investigating the effects of adding a small quantity of protein to a

regular carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drink on 50 mile cycling time trial

performance. We are particularly interested in any beneficial effect this

drink composition may have on recovery, e.g. the effect on performance

during consecutive days of racing or on repeated days of hard training.

Participation in the study would require two familiarisation trials in which

the participant would perform a 50 mile time trial on their own bike, set up

on a Computrainer in the Human Performance laboratory at Strathclyde

University. Following this they would be asked to complete four further 50 mile

time trials: the first two on consecutive days whilst consuming either

the protein-carbohydrate drink or the carbohydrate only drink throughout the

trial; and the final two time trials, again on consecutive days performed

about a week later, consuming the other drink throughout the trials.

As well as measuring time trial performance with each drink we will also

measure markers of how well the drinks maintain carbohydrate levels in the

body, help the body to regulate its temperature and help the body to repair

or reduce the damage done to the exercising muscles.

We are looking for healthy male volunteers who cycle regularly (at least

three times per week) and are aged 18-35 years. As participants will be

training regularly we would be planning that these testing sessions will act

as a substitute for some of their regular training sessions.
