  1. A few friends and I are considering cycling the West Highland Way next summer and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for such a jaunt? Some questions we have been discussing are; 1. Is it possible to cycle the same route that others walk? 2. Is it suitable for a road bike or is a mountain bike a must? 3. Is it feasible to do the route in one day? I'm sure there will be lots of things I haven't considered yet but thought I'd float these for starters and I'd appreciate any advice that is forthcoming. Cheers Allan
  2. Ramsay, That's good to know as I am looking at replacing my Crud Roadracer mudguards also, and was looking at 2 options; SKS Race Blades or the SKS Chromoplastic type. I normally run 23mm tyres. Do you think your mudguard issue was because of the 25mm tyre? Allan
  3. Thanks for the pointers Gents. Silly question time ; will a change to a tyre like this require any changes to my brake calipers, i.e. will they be the same size / profile as my current 700x23? Allan
  4. I know there isn't much difference between our summer and winter seasons but I feel it's getting close to that time where I need a more winter type tyre. I've been running on my GP4000S over the summer and have been a fair weather cyclist thus far . But I've decided to try and brave as much winter cycling as the weather permits and could do with some advice / recommendations on a good quality winter tyre? Thanks Allan
  5. Follow the link below for the chance to ride a 4km or 14km section of the soon to be opened M74 extension. http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/residents/parks_outdoors/m74bikenhike.htm AllanC

    Winter tyres

Campbell, Given my own experience of the Continental range this year I think we have a winner, these look like an excellent choice, backed up by great reviews. Thanks to you and Tony for the advice. Allan

    Winter tyres

I'm running 700x23c at the moment and the mudguard is quite neat already so not sure I'd get away with it. I have the basic Sora brakes that came with the bike when I got it (Specialized Allez 2010 Sport). The only thing I've changed is to the Conti tyres.

    Winter tyres

I'm looking for some recommendations on winter tyres. I've been running on Continental GP4000s over my first summer and have been very impressed with them, but I'm assuming these will not be ideal for the winter conditions. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks Allan
  10. I'm looking to buy a cycle carrier suitable for rear mounting on a Vauxhall Corsa to take 2 bikes, if anyone has one going spare. Cheers Allan

    Route planner

I came across this beta route planning website that I found quite useful http://www.cyclestreets.net/. Once you've entered your starting poing and destination it calculates 3 routes for you; Fastest, Balanced & Quietest, all of which are colour coded on a detailed map and elevation chart. It gives details of traffic volumes and the type of surface to be expected on the route. It allows the data to be exported in GPX format for GPS devices and even offers a flyover of the route using Google Earth. I'm not sure if this will meet every riders needs but being a novice I'm still easily impressed with this sort of stuff Cheers Allan
  12. Does anyone fancy 20 miles or so around 1pm on Friday? Was thinking Johnstone - Port Glasgow on the track at a steady 14-16 mph. I'm relatively new to the sport so this distance is comfortable for me at the moment, but building up gradually. I hope to be out with the 30 milers in the next few weeks. Cheers Allan
  13. Kenny, can you make my jersey a full zip version please? Thanks Allan
  14. Kenny, 1 x Short Sleeve Jersey - XL 1 x Bib Shorts - L Thanks AllanC
  15. Grant, I am a newbie to the sport but recently bought a Specialized Allez 2010, compact double (£599) on the advice of several friends who say it is an excellent entry level road bike. I've not really put it to the test yet but have been impressed with it so far. It comes in a triple too for £629 http://www.dalescycles.com/2010_special ... 0allzt.htm. At that price it leaves you a bit of scope to add in some extras if you need them. Good luck Allan
