Climbing training locations

My climbing is terrible!! I'm downright rubbish at it. That said, i do like to do myself in with a nice climb up the rest and be thankful for example.

But, i was wondering if there were any locations that anyone could recommend to improve my climbing speed and any training advice to go along with it? Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

I'll try to answer this, if no-one else will.

Speed on hills is a simple equation of sustained power divided by weight.

More sustained power or less weight equates to more speed.

Any and all hills are essential for cycle training.

Since you are from Paisley, I suggest the Glennifer Braes climb from Stanely Dam to the car park, although it can be busy.

Climb from Johnstone Castle may be better and I plan to try it out soon.

Three times each session, guaging your effort to just be able to complete all ascents.

Sprint, as best you can, for the last 30 seconds.

Note your times and technique.

Only one session per week, assuming you are doing club TT's and long Sunday runs.

Try different alternative gearing and technique some weeks but mainly stay seated.

That is, high cadence spinning or very low a cadence and on some occasions, stand all the way.

Take it very easy on the descent.

Competing against yourself should see your times steadily improve.

Don't worry too much about the weight side of the equation as it will look after itself, if you cycle hard regularly.

Starting with some ballast is a great training aid. ;-)

Cheers Jim

I did used to like a good climb up the braes as its steep and longish for this part of the country. I think i'll try and knock my pan in while my bikes heavy and maybe add a full water bottle as ballast, then hopefully i'll reap the benefits when i upgrade it.

I should really add a Government Health Warning:

I am not a Coach.

I am not a Doctor.

I have never ridden up that road.

I've only freewheeled down and that was quite easy.

The road has been used for the Scottish Hill Climb Champs.

Let me know if your fitness improves.

I may well follow my own advice, if you see a benefit.

Fitness levels can go down as well as up.
