  1. Robert Sharpe has kindly agreed to run a bike maintenance night on Monday 30th January from 7pm in the club rooms.

This will be aimed at anyone who thinks they could benefit from finding out a bit more about how to keep their bike in good working order which in turn will keep them safe and fast (and of course might save money in the long term). Either just turn up and watch an expert at work or bring your bike to tinker with in the relative safety of the club rooms.

Since Rob is giving up his free time I plan to go ahead with this only if enough people confirm that they will attend (at least 7 to make it worthwhile?). I'll be there so only another 6 required.

If you consider yourself to be already proficient in this field I'm sure Rob would appreciate you coming along to give him a hand.

    Cheers

Rob - feel free to put up more info about what you'll be hoping to do on the night.

A couple of years ago we spent the first week in January near Aviemore - it was bitterly cold, so cold in fact that Loch Morlich had frozen over! There had been a big dump of snow just before we arrived and the temp stayed below -10 for all of the week we were there. I did some downhill skiing with the kids at the Lecht but tried some cross country on my own on the last day. All of the mountain bike tracks around Loch Morlich had a great covering of snow so i picked up some kit at the hire shop at the camp site - asked for some tips - and headed off having been told to just have a go but watch going down hill - it's not the same as down hill skiing :-? At the end of the day I had a fantastic 2 hours around the tracks near the Loch. The place was virtually deserted and it was one of those rare Scottish WInter days - freezing cold but clear blue skies and stunning views. I started off wearing all my downhill kit (base layer, t-shirt, ski-top, ski jacket, under-gloves, thermal mittens, woolen hat) but overheated after about 200 yards and was soon down to thermal vest with the sleaves rolled up. It was a fantastic work out - much much harder than any downhill I've done - and when you get into a rhythm you can get a good speed going - even up hill. A word of warning about going downhill though  I though I would just try what I do on downhill skis on a hill, ie bend the knees and lean forward. Of course when you do this on cross country skis your heel lifts off and you fall flat on your face  At least there was no-one around to witness it. The last section was a steep downhill bit - I walked that bit.

Next time I meet Celine out with the Bunch I must ask her for some tips on how to do the downhill bit.

    Cheers

  3. I've e-mailed Brian to let him know the AGM is next Saturday and the Don Smith will be on the agenda. If I remember correctly we agreed that a small group would be formed to liase with braveheart over the organising of this event in 2006. I've asked him to wait until after next Saturday when we'll decide who is in this group and then we'll get in touch with him. If it's very urgent he's got my phone number.

  4. I'm going to try and get along to these nights this year, but can't make it tomorrow. For the novices (including me) can someone post a few more details, for example

Do you need to bring your own turbo trainer?

Will it be run with everyone doing the same thing, like a spin class?

Is it better to use good bike or winter bike? (Or time trial bike if positioning is important)

Is a cadence monitor mandatory / good if you have it / a waste of time and money?

And any other tips you can think of.

    Cheers

  5. Congratulations again Darryl. Hello, beer !!

And well done Liam Oh ya dancer ! 11 sec faster than last year (and Darryl only improved by 2 sec ;-) ) at this rate of improvement next year's climb should be fun.

Over the year Liam has produced results in confined APRs, 7.5 and 10 mile club TTs and now in the hill climb. He also took part in his first open APR and as far as I know was the only club member at the TLI criterium event in Clydebank (7th place?). A great year Liam - well done. Definately in the running for the development officer's "one to watch in the future" award, 2005.

    Cheers
