stevie
I know a lot of this is all down to personal preference but what is the thinking on bar width?I run 40's on the road but ran massive 800mm bars on the MTB.I was thinking either 44 or 42. (bearing in mind the bike will be doing more winter road miles initially with a bit of cross before becoming my summer gravel bike)
DavieB
There is (or was) a school of thought that 'cross bars should be wider - some guff about increased control. I would however keep them the same as your road bike it also helps when building up frames as parts can be swapped out/over between bikes. Cheers, D
2023 Subscriptions PaulL Posted October 26, 2017 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted October 26, 2017 My bars are shorter on my Road(40) bike than Cross bike(42).... this was more by accident than choice. Having 42 on Cross bike is very comfy, but not sure it affects performance Although I agree with Davies consistency idea, 40cm is on the very short side for a cross bike. Old skool rule 2cm wider your cross bike, worth testing it out on a few rides
stevie
Cheers guys - There is a lot to be said for wide bars aiding stability. Picking up a brand new set of Ritchy Pro logic IIs in 44 so I'll see how they are - If they are rubbish I'll just punt them on.
stevie
So the second hand bars I've picked up that are allegedly 44cm and the exact same size as the 40s I've got on the cervelo! Will stick them in and see anyway.
Committee Alan McLean Posted October 28, 2017 Committee Report Share Posted October 28, 2017 Manufacturers measure centre to centre, or outside to outside, or even probably inside to inside. Usually in the small print somewhere. I use same for road and cx but narrower for my rare track appearances cos it looks good. Difference between 44 and 40, however measured, feels huge. stevie
