2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted January 29, 2017 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted January 29, 2017 Hi Folks I'm thinking of purchasing one of these for the cross bike to use for light touring duties. Have any of you used one or something similar? Thoughts? Cheers Darryl
2023 Subscriptions GrahamF Posted January 30, 2017 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted January 30, 2017 If you get one I'll be interested to see how you get on with it, I've looked at this type of bag and dismissed them as being expensive and difficult to access for a limited amount of space mounted high on the bike. They are trendy but I don't think they have much to offer over a traditional large saddlebag. My last years light touring set up had a bit more space and flexibility for getting at things en-route, but is means more weight. I will no doubt review it for the coming season. For comparison this is the fully loaded self sufficient touring kit with a tent on the top of the rear rack! Darryl Gunson
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted January 30, 2017 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted January 30, 2017 Thanks Graham. Your set-up looks good. Just the sort of thing I've used in the past for long tours. My current bike has no fittings for racks etc, so I'm limited. My thinking is that I either get one of these, or a standard saddlebag. Problem is that to use a big enough standard saddle bag, such as a Carradice, I'd need a support for it and probably a new saddle (with fittings for the bag to fasten to). Not sure yet. Current thinking is to go v light with the outpost bag and either a bar bag or top tube bag. cheers D
JaneF
https://www.alpkit.com/products/koala and https://www.alpkit.com/products/airlok-xtra-tapered may last for 500 trip? Hi Darryl, Probably worth looking at their website for bike packing products if no rack mounts. Jane

Administrators Jannza Posted January 30, 2017 Administrators Report Share Posted January 30, 2017 Might be worth looking at the Ortlieb saddle bags. They have 3 sizes, I have the large 2.7 which has enough space for jacket, food, spares etc.
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted January 30, 2017 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted January 30, 2017 cheers Jan. I'm looking for something much bigger. Minimum 10L should do it.

2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted January 30, 2017 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted January 30, 2017 Thanks Chung. These seem quite expensive -£100 for the 17L version - about £10more than the ortlieb version. Best value seems to be the alpinekit at £70. The Blackburn can be had for £60 but it's only 11L capacity. I've got until August to decide, so plenty of time

2023 Subscriptions BoydJohnston Posted January 30, 2017 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted January 30, 2017 I use the q/r version from here - http://www.carradice.co.uk/products/saddle-fixing-systems- with a traditional small saddle bag. The support and the bag will work out relatively expensive - but will last a long time. Darryl Gunson

Administrators Jannza Posted February 3, 2017 Administrators Report Share Posted February 3, 2017 I get a newsletter from Lomo and they have a new bike bag. You might be able to attach to handlebar or saddle. http://www.ewetsuits.com/acatalog/dry-bike-tail-bag.html Darryl Gunson
