2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted May 7, 2015 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 7, 2015 Ok guys. With only 4 wanting to stay over, we should have a chat about what we all want to do. I'll be out tonight so we can have a word then, but my feeling is that if most want to come back up the road, then I'm inclined to do the same. But if we do not intend to stay, then we don't have to do the ride on Saturday. We could go first thing Sunday, and the roads would be quieter. We could even postpone the whole thing to the following weekend, if that suits more people. robster82
DavieB
Darryl, Would tend to agree that if the majority are coming back up then it would be best to all do the same thing. I am easy whether it is Sat or Sun. Cheers, Davie Darryl Gunson
2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted May 7, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 7, 2015 If no-one is staying over then how about starting and finishing somewhere in the northern section of the route? (i dont know the area very well so dont know where would be suitable).Overall the same route just a different start / finish and will cut down on the journey time somewhat. robster82 and Darryl Gunson
2023 Subscriptions P McDonald Posted May 7, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 7, 2015 Jan Yes, makes sense to start at nearest point. I am back in the picture to attend after trading some brownie points. Can probably make Saturday or Sunday. Darryl Gunson
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted May 7, 2015 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 7, 2015 Good idea Jan, and great to have you back on board Paul. Probably the best place to start would be Keswick. Darryl Gunson
al yuille
Makes sense to start in or near Keswick. Stick with the date Darryl otherwise it will not happen ...again !
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted May 7, 2015 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 7, 2015 One final question for you all. Given that we are not now staying overnight, shall we do it on Saturday or Sunday? Roads might be quieter on Sunday, but I'm easy either way. alexb
Sunday would be preferable to avoid football clash, but will happily go with majority.
Alan Michael
Might be able to swing the Sunday one day trip. 😉
simon simpson
Daryl, Al spoke to me about this. If it's still a day ride why not ride from the pub in Troutbeck; starts with a dual carriageway drag, through Keswick, has kirkstone as the last big one and a drag over 'whatever it's called edge'. Saves driving all the way into coniston thereby saving you 1/2. Hr or more driving each way at least. Maybe more? I'm probably coming along with Al if the Tories of Englandshire haven't executed all the public service workers by then and sold off their teeth and hair. I hear they are opening a smelting plant in Renfrewshire for the fillings. Oh, and a rendering plant for Glasgow City... 2023 Subscriptions P McDonald Posted May 8, 2015 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 8, 2015 Either day for me. Slight preference for Sunday with early start to be home at sensible hour in evening.
simon simpson
Can we firm up on this? Saturday 6th? Troutbeck pub? its where the route comes onto the A66 and turns left to head for Keswick Start time 8.30 down there? 9 am down there? 2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted May 11, 2015 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 11, 2015 Myself, Paul, Alex and Alan have expressed a preference for Sunday. For me it just means I can take the car and 4 people and 4 bikes. So, the rest: George, Davie, Al, Martin, Jann, Billy What is your preference? Either way, start time of 8.30 sounds good at the troutbeck pub. McG

simon simpson
I'll discuss with Al and Gerry tonight and post up.It's a long ride 110/112 miles - you are lucky if you average 14 mph if its a mixed group (these days I'd be lucky to make 14mph I think!) so that's 8 hours in the saddle an hour or more for breaks. The middle 40 miles took us almost 4 hours. Last time we did it was the same weekend in June, 5 degrees at Troutbeck at 8.30 and we got back to the car about 10 hours later. That's quite a late return for a Sunday
Guest EPCC
Sunday would be better for me but may be riding a 25 TT if I get some form and a start So ignore me and I will go with the flow
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted May 11, 2015 Author 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted May 11, 2015 Simon, I take your point. It will be late back. I'm happy to start even earlier, say 7.30, or just accept it will be an epic day, no different from a sportive or an audax Alan Michael

alexb
Guys, visit to the consultant post op means this will be a no for me now. It's doubtful I'll be back on a bike until June earliest and this would be too much too soon I'm afraid. Gutted! Hope it's sunny for you though.
