Scottish Cycling Volunteering and Coaching Conference

Scottish Cycling will organise the second Volunteering and Coaching Conference in February next year.

 

And for the first time ever, Scottish Cycling will hold the Annual Awards Dinner at this conference.

 

The dates for the conference are Saturday 5th February and Sunday 6th February 2011, at the Stirling Management Centre, University of Stirling.

 

The full programme is:

 

Saturday 5th February

- 10:00am Official Opening

- 10:05am – 1:00pm Foundation Cycle Maintenance Course (1) run by Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op (This workshop covers the basic essentials for dealing with common roadside repairs so you can get back on your bike and home safely. It includes: wheel removal and installation; puncture repair; gear tuning, and basic brake adjustment. This class is essentially road- and trail-side 'bicycle first aid'. Participants are asked to bring their own bike.)

- 10:05am – 1:00pm Timekeeping and Recording Training (This workshop will introduce you to the basics of timekeeping and recording in the cycle sport.)

- 2:00pm – 5:00pm In Safe Hands (This workshop supports clubs to put child protection policies in to practice. It is most suitable for those acting as the club welfare officer, but is also relevant for those responsible for managing or organising the club. Participants must have attended Safeguarding and Protecting Children prior to this workshop.)

- 10:05am – 5:00pm Event Organisers Training (This full day training course will look into all aspects of organising events in the cycle sport. It will be divided into on-road and off-road events.)

- 1:00pm – 2:00pm Lunch Break

- 6:00pm onwards: Annual Awards Dinner (Details to follow)

 

Sunday 6th February

- 10:05am – 1:00pm A Club for All (This Running Sports workshop identifies the benefits of opening up your sports club, to include a wider membership base - meaning more coaches, players, officials and increased revenue, improved eligibility for lottery funding, and quality ratings such as Clubmark; whilst ensuring the involvement and support of the local community. This sports equity workshop outlines how your club can benefit from reaching all members of the community, and explains how to reach out to them - young people, older people, those on low incomes, disabled people and people from ethnic minorities.)

- 2:00pm – 5:00pm Funding for your Club (This Running Sports workshop provides practical ideas for raising funds from a range of sources, including fundraising events and sponsorship. It will also help you to identify how you can promote your club more effectively.)

- 10:05am – 5:00pm Intensive Cycle Maintenance Course run by Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op (This full-day workshop covers: puncture repair: wheel removal, locating punctures, fixing punctures, wheel refitting; wheel truing - essential for better braking; brake adjustment for powerful, silent stopping; adjusting hub bearings for maximum life and smooth running; gear adjustment: including fitting new cables and fine tuning front and rear mechanisms; bottom bracket and headset adjustment; recommendations for routine bicycle servicing. Participants are asked to bring their own bike. Limited places available.)

- 10:05am – 5:00pm Outdoor Emergency First Aid for Cyclists (This full-day SQA Accredited First Aid training will be delivered by Collective Training. The course covers essential life saving first aid techniques for the outdoor environment. The training is the only course of this type found on the new Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework. The certificate remains valid for three years. Limited places available.)

- 10:05am – 5:00pm Coaching Development Session: Peer-reviewed video analysis (This full-day training session is open to all coaches who have completed a coaching course or are currently involved in delivering coaching sessions with SC affiliated clubs.)

- 1:00pm – 2:00pm Lunch Break

 

Please note the following:

- To book a place at the conference, please contact the Volunteer Support Officer, by email [email protected] or phone the office.

- The deadline for signing up to any of the courses is Friday 28th January 2011.

- For the conference Scottish Cycling will charge participants a day fee to cover the refreshments. In addition, for some of the workshops Scottish Cycling will have a charge; please see below full details.

o Day Fee: £10 (for SC/BC members) or £15 (for non-members)

o Foundation Cycle Maintenance Course: £25 (inclusive of the day fee)

o Intensive Cycle Maintenance Course: £44 (inclusive of the day fee)

o Outdoor Emergency First Aid for Cyclists: £50 (inclusive of the day fee)

- Payment can be made: by cheque made payable to ‘Scottish Cycling’ or online with PayPal on the Scottish Cycling website. The online option will be available very soon.

 

Places are limited and we work on a first come first serve basis.

I know Jann was interested in a Timekeeper Course, so here's the first opportunity for you.

 

Anyone else interested in any of these options? I would have thought some of my fellow Jets coaches will be keen to attend - can we work out between us what to do so we can get a spread of coverage?

 

I'd be keen to do the first aid myself.
