i have just completed the uk strength and conditioning course level one. I am looking for anyone who has any contacts in this field, as i want to learn cycling specific drills etc to add to this, i am lead to bleave its almost identical

This knowledge, time and effort will be in turn passed back into the club members.

If you are serious in getting involved in track cycling with the speculated date of the velodrome at 2011/12, i would sugest you need at least 12 months prepertion for what is a grueling test.

i beleave miss mcglyne and brogan (forgive spelling) are on a specific program from the bcf / official body? at the palac eof arts. (west of scotland instituteof sport) - maybe you two ladies may have a contact i can speak to ?

If there is enough interest then we could look at booking some gym time at said venue -

cheers dave

Hi Dave

Just read your post and don't think Kayleigh has spotted ti either. You are right enough about Kayleigh training at the West of Scotland Institute of Sport but the Gym prog she is on is something which was worked out between her and her weights coach and is specific to her and what she wants to achieve at any given time in the season. I understand that that 's how it is for most riders who might benefit from lifting so I doubt if you could go down the One prog for everyone road as heavy lifts may be good for some but not for others and again will vary considerably at certain times of the year.

I can tell you that using weights actually had a detrimental effect on Kayleigh's speed until she and her coach got to know what worked for her, so beware,as with weights, a little knowledge can indeed be a dangerous thing! The way that any on the bike work is worked intothe training week along with the Gym work is also very important and once again needs and abilities of the individual do require a bit of thought and care .

As far as booking the institute Gym is concerned, I don't think that is possible. It is a funded organisation and only provides coaching and facilities for athletes supported by their governing bodies. No one gets using the gym unless supervised by an institute coach.

You could do worse than looking at Joe Friel's book for a few tips for general weight use for cyclists but ti doesn't come close for anyone specialising in a specific track discipline.

Hope this helps

Cheers

do you know anyone in the in the bcf uci etc i can speak to ?

What you say is correct, but don't get me wrong, i am not trying to create a olyimpic team with specific training on a 36 month program, with intermittant peaks for specific evets etc. I was looking at education the guys about the benifits of free weights, correct posture and lifting technque, the very ground work your daughter used, no dought. This foundation would enable anyone who then wants to get into the free weights seriously to assist track cycling to do so seemlysy and safely (at his point if talent like Kayleigh was spotted they would jump onto the fully supported olyimpic gold medal convayer belt). All the east block countries school childen use olyimpic weights as default, our culture and heath and safety culture does not allow children to develop these basics

I personnaly have been using weights for 10 years on and off, and understand alot about the scientific application aspects weight training, but also know my limitations and understand my goal is foundation work.

It would be a shame if such a wonderful building is exclusive, then its a catch 22 - how do we develop grass roots track cycling, these are points i would like to address with the bcf / uci uk

Dave,

Sorry I can't help you with contacts as I don't really know of any who would be up for what would have to be quite a lengthy consultation. I can tell you that Kayleigh does a lot of the usual strength and power lifts in exactly the same way as anyone else. I am not aware of any cycling specific routines at all. Cycling coaches deal with on the bike work and Gym coaches tend to stick to strength and conditioning although there is communication betwen them. There is obviously a great deal more to it than just lifting heavy weights to exhaustion but that's where the skill of the coach and his knowledge of the ability of the athlete comes in. Again I reckon the way that the on the bike work is blended into the Gym prog along with recovery is also very important and can be a bit of a trial and error affair. I am sure that everyone does it it their own way and that a fair bit of flexibility will be used at the coach or riders discretion along the way depending on progress or lack of progress.

As far as I can see the general prog in the Friel book I mentioned looks not bad for a general prog which might produce better all round fitness if nothing else.

Sorry I can't be more helpful but I think you will find that it is a pretty complex subject and everyone has their own views on it. You may find that the Nat sport centre at Inverclyde offer courses for a fee or they may be able to give you a steer as to who else might ?

Cheers

Jim
