Committee Alan McLean Posted April 5, 2020 Committee Report Share Posted April 5, 2020 I'm probably not fit enough anyway but I'd be grateful for any tips to avoid being dropped after a few minutes like last week. In fact I did not even join the bunch or see any other bunch members, I just saw the beacon leader disappearing into the distance. I only caught up with Andy after about 15 mins. Do I just ride harder? Or get to the start faster?
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted April 6, 2020 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 No idea Alan, but I’ll be there. My plan is to get to the start early having already warmed up for 30 mins. Don’t know many of this bunch now anyway but hopefully I’ll be able to find a friendly wheel. Maybe it’ll be yours😀

Committee Alan McLean Posted April 6, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 Ta both. Will stick at pre-lockdown weight (ahem). If I am dropped and meet another Wheeler I suggest we neutralise and try to cruise at 2.5-3w/kg for the duration. I have not yet tried "drafting". I have to plan all this in advance because I cannot text in game. So sad that I have come to this level of nerdism. Darryl Gunson
Committee Alan McLean Posted April 6, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 Darryl, one suggestion is to rev up and hit the start super hard. Might be an April fool but I will give it a try. Darryl Gunson
2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted April 6, 2020 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 Rev up? Not sure what that means, Alan. I’m not overly fussed if I get dropped. As for drafting, I’m not really sure either. I know you can get a drafting ‘power up’ but that is only temporary. I’ll watch out for you. Committee Alan McLean Posted April 6, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 I think the idea is that you have a flying start, already doing about 5w/kg as the gun goes! I am going to try tomorrow. Probably means I'll blow up even earlier. We shall look back on this thread and laugh. Darryl Gunson
2023 Subscriptions George Posted April 6, 2020 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 Another tip is to try and get to the front before Bishy Hill so you can drift back through the bunch. #wilyoldpro
2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted April 6, 2020 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 With how busy the routes are at the moment it's easy to get caught in the draft with one of the other riders out on the course rather than sticking with the rider you are trying to follow. The official events and races are a bit better for this because generally the only riders on the map will be those doing those events. Also the drafting model on the flat is more like a time trial sort of effort than the on / off you'll get in an outside bunch. If there are a few guys pushing the pace then you just cant ease off or you'll be dropped Here is a power distribution from the last zwift race i did - virtually no zone 1 and 2. In a normal chaingang (even when its hard) id expect about 30-50% of the ride to be in those zones. Looks more like the distribution i get for a TT on the Georgetown

Committee Alan McLean Posted April 6, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 6, 2020 Omg. That would explain a lot.
2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted April 7, 2020 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 7, 2020 Michael Burke is doing some group rides on a Tuesday too and has put down a challenge - wheelers v ivy! if you follow him you'll get an invite. No sticky draft but a neutralised first lap of the volcano then 3 laps hard after that, about 20km in total. I may do that instead of the Renfrew bunch ride
Committee Alan McLean Posted April 7, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 7, 2020 That sounds great and probably less upsetting than rb. Hope to see some of you there. Would it be ok to post on club WhatsApp?

2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted April 7, 2020 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 7, 2020 That was pretty tough! My avatar was frozen on the turbo at the start so had to reload and join late outwith the group well done to Conal hanging on with Michael and the two Pauls...all strong guys! impressive w/kg
Committee Alan McLean Posted April 7, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 7, 2020 Excellent workout. 5km easy, 5km desperate hanging on and 10k on futile catch up.
MichaelB
Thanks for that Chaps, always good fun to suffer with others! I think the Junior took it! So 1 up to the wheelers..or is it more like 1 up to the Jets haha Interesting try it without the sticky draft...aka full suffer mode. Maybe make it abit longer so longer workout? 2024 Subscriptions Darryl Gunson Posted April 7, 2020 2024 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 7, 2020 Thanks for hosting Michael. That was bloody hard. Finished with Ritchie, Andy G, and one other. Fan being delivered tomorrow so hopefully slightly cooler next time. Cheers
Committee Alan McLean Posted April 7, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 7, 2020 Thanks again Mike. Yes I like the idea of APR if you could make it work. Would you just let people go off at 1-2 min intervals after first lap?
MichaelB
Yeah I think first lap easy as one group. Then group 1 keeps going and group 2 stop pedalling for 2mins? Will take a few efforts to get time gaps right perhaps
2023 Subscriptions thejanullrichdietplan Posted April 8, 2020 2023 Subscriptions Report Share Posted April 8, 2020 Looking at the lap times then 2 minutes sounds about right. Will make for a painful chase though!
Committee Alan McLean Posted April 8, 2020 Author Committee Report Share Posted April 8, 2020 Does the app allow you to see the time gaps to riders more than a few places ahead/behind?
