I attach message I posted on bike box thread.

hoping to make more use of our club rooms so ideas/ costings for turbos broadband/ swift packages all welcome. Volunteers for researching best options ? Looking also to set up a steering group for maintenance of equipment & maintenance workshops. Again looking for volunteers

Thanks to all for bike box suggestions . At AGM last night the majority view was that purchasing bike boxes was not the best use of club funds therefore that plan is back on the shelf. However it has been agreeed that we carry out a costing for installing broadband at club rooms and a costing for fixing existing tacx  flow turbos & purchasing turbos equipped for power. I will open a thread for this. Also looking  for volunteers for maintenance of our bike equipment and to introduce more bike maintenance workshops. A number of members have shown an interest in this and again can be discussed on thread and hopefully we will get some working groups in place to take these ideas forward

Charlie, how can turbos be broken? They are robust bits of kit that last for years. Have hardly been used by members. Are members “borrowing” bits or are they being misused on Jets nights?

Same thing happened to some of the track bikes. Returned scraped & bent. Checks should be in place to ensure kit is respected & individuals who damaged them pay for replacements.

Hi Charlie not sure if this will get posted or not but think you need some clarity.

All the tacx flow turbo trainers give a power reading , parts likely to be broken missing are the  cadence sensor magnet and the actual sensor, reason for this is twofold firstly people forget to take them off and take them home never to return and secondly people break the sensor by forgetting they have it attached to bike and plugged into trainer and then break it

So to sum up your turbos work adequately, if you want direct drive trainers think you would have to pay £1k plus for good ones

Hi Geo, just as Billy points out damage is due to wear and tear. For clarity Jets have never used the turbos - we are roller only.

Regarding checks to ensure kit is respected - agreed, all we would need is a volunteer to do so.

Charlie,

Firstly, a pity about the bike box idea. I thought it a good one. Not everyone can source, afford or readily store such an item. A couple of club boxes might have encouraged members to sample foreign roads, and if the boxes were regaled in club livery a nice way of promoting the club at the airport(s). However the majority have spoken for the time being.

If it spares/parts required to get the club tacx turbos up and running fully then I've found this outfit very useful in the past -  hollandbikeshop.com.

If my memory, such as it is these days, serves me correctly when the flow turbos were purchased I sorted all the various leads and sensors for the turbos into small boxes - one for each turbo. It is detail of the anal variety I realise however perhaps a similar approach be used once the turbos have been rendered fully operational but this time use locked boxes and a sign out, sign in system with the rider/user responsible (deposit/replacement charge) for ensuring everything is returned. I note George's comments above re the track bikes being returned in a different condition to that when hired out.

Personally I don't think you'll get a volunteer who would or could cover all possible sessions and therefore the committee may need to impose a code of conduct for the use of/access to club equipment. Perhaps the key holder / session organiser be ultimately responsible for session equipment - that would at least focus one mind when it comes to care of club equipment.

On a positive note Black Friday deals abound at the moment and direct driver trainers are to be had relatively cheaply. £400 for a Kickr thingymabob?? Add in your BC discount and 'the world's your oxster, Rodney'

This is good shout...  I am probably the least technical cyclist you'll ever know - no matter how hard I try and concentrate, I'm lucky I can get my back wheel off and on again sometimes

I'm running a magnetic turbo on my old (old) bike - a triple chains specialised allez in my hut.  It does a very basic job. I don't have a spare wheel to swap my current winter/summer steed straight onto the turbo so if I wanted to do that, it would involve switching tyres (to turbo tyre) and then off again when heading out.  A direct drive option like the above in the clubhouse seems like the next best thing tbh.   If it can go on zwift, then hell that's even better and may even encourage a JWCC virtual race series over the winters (a bit like GGCC did before?).    Just my tuppence worth, but I think guys like myself would benefit more from that than standard rollers, or turbos that I'd need to switch wheels etc. :)

I'm a big fan of zwift but it's going to be expensive when adding the cost of the devices to run it.  Fullarton clubrooms are connected up to race (i think it is a tacx programme rather than zwift) with 6 turbos and each have a laptop + a bigger monitor...looks great but thats going to cost thousands.

Of course if clubrooms had broadband then those that want to race online could bring their own laptop or ipad or phone to connect up.

Is the whole premise of Zwift not that you can race people without having to listen to them?

If, IF! You can get a Kickr for £400 then fair play (mine set me back £1100. Thank god the wife doesn’t go in the garage) you are still talking at least 4-5x£400 plus the cost of Zwift & broadband. A lot of doe.But I suppose it is there to be spent on the members.

You do know that you could just all get Zwift at home and race each other from there? It also makes it easier to cheat

Charlie, you will be glad to know that you can actually wheelsuck on Zwift!

Those are not tacx flow units in the Fullerton picture. Flows run a single cable from the brake unit to the bar mounted headset. Fortius units perhaps on a networked pc or individual laptops. Good set up nonetheless.

The £400 trainer was a tacx flux from Halfords. Apologies to George for the wee moment of shock.

The trainers you have can do that , you require a pc upgrade which used to cost about £120 that would then allow you to access the training app on either phone tablet or lap top , you would need to check but you could then race on the taxc courses or ride one of their films it will cost a subscription.

I f you send a message to tacx they will happily help you to get the most out of what you have , however it isn’t the quality of the trainer that makes you better it’s the quality of the training

The best trainer on the market by a mile is the neo direct drive , road feel and up to 20 % incline, plus over 2000 watts however if you go with direct drive they don’t fit all bikes, you will need bolt through adapters for those who use disc breaks you will need a selection of 10, 11 speed cassettes, ideally Campagnolo and Shimano, I find either works ok , you would also need tools to change cassette plus it would be better if the person doing the changes know what they are doing as the lock ring is soft and easily cross threaded.

Subscriptions will be dearer as it’s a group

Mr Dooley is selling the neo for £900

might have waisted my time writing this as the post gestapo decide what I can post or not
